Catherine's Rules

At the beginning of each chapter in Rules is a rule that acts as a metaphor for Catherine’s experiences.

Choose one of Catherine’s rules. Explain how that rule shows the author’s message. Be sure to use specific details from the book, Rules.

Use the work we did in book talk today to help you with your response.
Here are some of Catherine’s rules:
-Sometimes you’ve gotta work with what you’ve got.
-Sometimes things work out, but don’t count on it.
-Saying you’ll do something means you have to do it – unless you have a very good excuse.
-If you can only choose one, pick carefully.
-Sometimes people laugh when they like you. But sometimes they laugh to hurt you.
-Sometimes people don’t answer because they didn’t hear you. Other times it’s because they don’t want to hear you.

  1. I picked "sometimes you've gotta work with what you got." The author's message in the rule is when you don't have exactly what you wish for you have to use what you have. Ev: 1:Catherine has to always use the stuff she's gotten at the clinic like the pencils that were short. Ev.2:Catherine has to work with a brother that has autism and it makes her nervous to be around people with disabilities.

  2. the rule I choose is sometimes you've got to work with what you got. I think the author's message is that David always needs a specific answer but he cant get that all the time . you cant always have what you want immediately so you have to you have to work with what you got.

  3. I choose the rule ''if you an only pick one pick carefully'' when author says that rule to me means that if you can only pick one friend pick carefully the reason why is that Catherine really right now only has one friend and the only friend is krirsti and Kristi is pressuring Catherine to be friend with Ryan Dechaine and Catherine is going to have to pick if she wants to be friends or no.

  4. I am doing the chapter where it’s taking about the rule sometimes people don’t answer because they didn’t hear you. Other times it’s because they don’t want to hear you. That means sometimes you will be ignored. For example, when Catherine wanted to go to the mall Catherine’s dad ignored her. Her dad said no,I have to take David to the video store.

  5. I chose “If you can only choose one, pick carefully.” I think the author’s message is that if you can only choose one thing, choose what you value most. Catherine could choose Jason or Kristi. Jason is a very nice person and Kristi is not that nice, but she still chose Kristi to be her friend. Kristi did not turn out to be a good friend. Kristi always chose Ryan’s side and Ryan is a bully. If Catherine had chosen carefully she could have hung out with Jason and had a good friend.

  7. The rule that I choose is that "Sometimes you've got to work with what you got." I think the author that wrote that message is saying that David always needs specific answer but he can't get them all the time. You have to work with what you have, for example Catherine has to work with what she got in the clinic.

  8. I am doing"sometimes people don't answer you because they didn't hear you.Other times it's because they don't want to hear you."The dad wasn't listening to Cathrine and picking tomatoes over his family. Also he is willing to take David to the video store and won't take Cathrine somewhere.

  9. I choose the rule: "Sometimes you've got to work with what you've got". I choose this rule because in the book Catherine is not accepting that her brother David has autism and she is not working with what she has. She is trying to change David into someone he is not. For instance, she wishes that she would wake up one day and David would be a "normal" little brother. She also makes rules that he must follow, because she thinks this will make him normal.

  10. “Sometimes you’ve got to work with what you got.”
I chose this because Catherine has a brother that has autism and she wants him to wake up one day and be normal, but he’s staying the same. She also has some other problems such as Jason, Kristi, and Ryan. The author’s message is shown because she wants us to see that sometimes you don’t get what you want, and life isn’t always fair. You have to be flexible and work with what you’ve got. The author’s message is that you can be friends with anyone even if they have a disability, and sometimes you don’t like everything about your friends and no friend is perfect, like Jason. But sometimes those friends can be funny and you wont even know. That’s why you have to work with what you’ve got, so that it’s easier to have better friendships and a better life.

  11. I like sometimes things work out but don't count on it. Because I count on everything so that is a RULE for me. I count on my mom for EVERYTHING that she is use to it.

  12. Sometimes people don’t answer because they didn’t hear you. Other times it’s because they don’t want to hear you. I think the author put this in RULES because Catherine’s dad did not want to go to the mall with her when she ask. Also when she left he didn’t turn around.

  13. The rule I chose is sometimes you gotta work with what you got. I think this is because in the book Ryan Deshane keeps hurting Catherine by picking on david. Though catherine was still managing even when Kristi took sides with Ryan Deshane.

  14. The rule I choose is “Sometimes you’ve gotta work with what you got”. The author is trying to say that sometimes we may not get everything we want, but we should still work with what we are given. If I wanted a red crayon, but got a blue one, it doesn’t mean I can’t color with it. It just means is not the color I liked best. In the story Catherine has a brother name David. He has a disability. It is not easy to be with him, but she finds ways to deal with David without him yelling. One of the things that Catherine uses is scenes from David’s favorite book called “Frog and Toad".

  15. I picked the rule, “sometimes people laugh when they like they you, but sometimes they laugh to hurt you”. I think the author's message is some people will like you and some people won’t. Catherine’s brother, David, has autism. Ryan teases and laughs at David because he has autism, but David thinks that Ryan is laughing about a joke that is nice ,funny and friendly, not a mean joke. Catherine uses frog and toad dialog to make David happy. David said hi to Ryan even though Ryan was mean to David and that shows that David doesn't understand that ‘’sometimes people laugh when they like you. But sometimes they laugh to hurt you’’.

  16. The rule I choose was sometimes people laugh when they like you and sometimes they laugh to hurt you. Catherine and Jason lime each other. They often laugh and hangout together. Ryan on the other hand bully kids with disability and laugh to hurt them.

  17. Sometimes you have to work with what you've got, is the rule that I chose. I think the author was trying to tell us about this rule, when Catherine wished David would stop being autistic, but that didn't happen, so she had to work with what she got. Catherine made rules for when she would hang out so that they could both have a good time.

  18. I think the book rulse .if you can only choes one pick carefully.based on the book rule. This mean that you get to choes only one wish out of the many wishes you can have a nomal life. Cathines wish her broter hade a nomal life and didn’t have autism.

  19. The main problem in the story is that Catherine is not accepting of people who have disabilities. I know this because she meets a boy in occupational therapy. His name is Jason and he has cerebral palsy. She likes him but is embarrassed to tell her friends about him. I also know this because Catherine gets mad with her brother David who has autism. She yells at him when he puts her toys in the fish tank. I think she should be more patient with people who have challenges.
