Martin Luther King Jr. by Gwendolyn Brooks

Martin Luther King Jr.
by Gwendolyn Brooks

A man went forth with gifts.

He was a prose poem.
He was a tragic grace.
He was a warm music.

He tried to heal the vivid volcanoes.
His ashes are
    reading the world.

His Dream still wishes to anoint
the barricades of faith and of control.

His word still burns the center of the sun,
    above the thousands and the
    hundred thousands.

The word was Justice. It was spoken.

So it shall be spoken.
So it shall be done.

  7. The authors purpose of writing is this because they wanted people to know that Martin Luther King Jr was a powerful and kind man and he stood up for everyones rights because some people don't know about him and she wants them to understand how important he was to the community. This poem made me feel grateful for the life I'm living today because if it wasn't for him and other cilivil rights activist I wouldn't be able to have all my friends I have today, I wouldn't be able to have most privileges that all the white people would have. The metaphor that really stood out to me was "His dreams still wishes to anoint the barricades of faith & of control."That really stuck out to me because he really wanted us to all be happy and have peace faith and love, instead of being one of those people that stuck through his life and let all these painful things go on to us. He wanted to protect us people and he wanted to barricade other stuff and want dot keep faith and control in this world and that metaphor really showed how he wanted to barricade faith and control and wanted to make things anoint in the world.

  10. Martin Luther King Jr. By Gwendolyn Brooks 01/09/20
The author’s purpose was she felt inspired by MLK because he changed the world against segregation and injustice. Also, she wanted to publish it because she wanted to share her feelings about him publicly. By reading this poem it’s made me feel inspired as well. It also, made me wonder how he was able to get people to follow his beliefs and ideas through his words. The 4th stanza says, “His word still burns the center of the sun, above the thousands and the hundred thousand.” Because it shows that his words were powerful and still are. And he said those words in front of hundreds of thousands of people.

  13. I think the authors purpose was to describe the type of person Martin Luther King was and to share how his speeches and work during the Civil Rights movement helped the world. The poem made me feel like a stronger person because Martin Luther Kin's speeches made me feel like everyone deserved equality and should be treated the same way. The Tragic Grace metaphor stood out to me because even though he did die his words still spread and made peace. It's like those words spoken come to life.
