"Eating While Reading" by Gary Soto

Read the poem "Eating While Reading" by Gary Soto.

1. The author uses figurative language to describe the experience of eating treats while reading. Reread the lines below and explain what they mean.

What is better than
This sweet dance
On the tongue,
And this book
That pulls you in?
It yells, "Over here!"
And you hurry along
With a red, sticky face.

2. How does reading make you feel? Explain using a metaphor. Remember, a metaphor compares two unlike things.

3. The author uses alliteration in his poem, the repetition of the same letter or sound at the beginning of words: "Or the slow slither of snow cone syrup." Write your own alliteration about reading.

  2. The author is describing his love of reading and his favorite foods together. By sweet dance on the tongue, he really means the delicious food he's eating. By the book pulling you in he means getting to a good or exciting part. Reading is a coach to your brain to make it stronger. I made this metaphor because it shows that when you read, your brain gets stronger. Reading really registers right- remember your reading!

  3. I think that the words "What is better than this sweet dance on the tongue, and this book that pulls you in?
It yells 'Over here!' " means that the person is eating something very sweet and at the same time reading a good book because the pulled him in. To me when I get to a good part in reading it feels like I scored a goal. For example I love to read and as soon as I get home I read. Reading is writing that is ready to be read. For example some very well written book are just forgotten.

I really like your alliteration because you used the word beautiful and how big the book is.

  5. What is better than
    This sweet dance
    On the tongue,
    And this book
    That pulls you in?
    It yells, "Over here!"
    And you hurry along
    With a red, sticky face.

I think this means that is you find a book that you love it would pull you in so it would just suck you in to the book.

If I have a good book reading makes me feel like i am really friends with the character and when sad thing happens i get all shaky and i feel bad for that character and want to hug that person and make them feel better.

    I love having hilarious books.

The whole poem is about "What is better than eating a bunch of delicious things and reading a big beautiful book at the same time."
And I agree there are only a few things better than reading a great book and eating tons of delicious foods and candies.
    My alliteration is :
    Stories Stay Side by Side.

    (On bookshelves).

  7. the sentence "what is better then a sweet dance on your tongue and a book that pulls you in. it yells "Over here" and you hurry along with a red sticky face" i think means that what is better then a great book that pulls you in with food in your mouth so eating and reading.

reading makes me feel happy inside like a millon beautiful birds chirping.

if i had to write an alliteration about reading it would go like "books beautiful birds the book buys you"

  8. Reading is like when you take a relaxing walk on the beach because it's relaxing and exhilarating. When you read you're reading your book and it's so good that it feels like the Ocean breeze which is exhilarating. Reading is relaxing because sometimes when you get in your most comfy spot and start reading that like when you bury your feet in the sand.

  9. I think that the figurative language in this poem means that your tongue wants more candy but when you eat your last bight that candy was so so sour it turd red and your mouth was so sticky. Reading makes me feel like I just started a new adventure. "The What is better than this poem and the taste of candy on your tongue, or the pop of bubble gum, or the crack of sunflower seeds, or the bubbles of soda, or the sauce of beef jerky, or the slow slither of snow cone syrup running down your mouth? What is better than this sweet movement and this poem that pulls you in? It yells "Over here". and hurry along with a red sticky face".

  10. Reading a poem and any other book makes me feel like a bird flying in daylight.

  11. What it means when it says “ what is better than this sweet dance on the tongue” is that nothing is better than sweetness touching your tongue.

Reading makes me feel like a flower because all the words I read teach me something new and my mind grows.

    Reading is awesome
    Ruining all boredom
    Ruling all fun
    Read read read all day
    Thats the way

The overall poem means that nothing is better than reading a good book while snacking on treats. Not only are there sweets to snack on, but also the book itself is a treat. I even read during breakfast- it’s a part of my morning routine. The sectioned-off-area of the poem means that a book can pull you in. Sometimes, I pour all my heart into a book.
I can write many metaphors about the way I feel when reading books. Here is just one of them:
When a book touches my eyes, I become a bird who has never fallen.
    My alliteration about reading is:
    Broken books began to bawl,
Hilarious ones are happy in the hall.

  14. "What is better than this sweet dance on your tongue"means a great tast on your tongue like the candy that the poem was talking about. Reading some of my books its like am time traveling to a new world. An alliteration of readin could be the paradise of pages.

  15. In the first sentence, it’s basically saying nothing is better than candy and books. The second line means that books make you want to read more because they are very tempting, just like when you eat candy. For my metaphor,
I am sucked into a book like a baby sucks a pacifier. For my alliteration, I say, I am sucked swiftly and silently into the book.

  16. These words mean that the good sweet flavors are on your tongue and the book lures you in just like candy, and you read quickly with a sticky face because you've eaten candy.

Reading is like being in a dream because sometimes it's a nightmare at the scary parts and then it feels like I'm the character. If it's a mystery book, you don't know what the answer to the mystery is until the end and it's like waking up from a dream.

Dreamily, dramatically, I emphathize and imagine myself as a character in the book.

The meaning of the line, what is better than this sweet dance on the tongue is the taste of yummy candy. The meaning of the line, And this book that pulls you in and yells "over here!" And you run along with you red, sticky face is that you are reading a book that is so good that it pulls you in and you are inside the book. When I read i feel happy just like a bee flying around going from flower to flower taking polland. My alliteration is an explanation of the exploration and the experiences of the characters in the book.
