Historical Fiction

Read the short story, "A Spectacular Ride" by Drollene P. Brown (click on the pictures above to read it again).
Think about our lessons so far about historical fiction. What are the belief systems, physical and emotional setting and important details in this short story? Explain.

  1. the physical setting in this is that she goes to a lot of towns and the road she took was muddy and slippery. and the emotional setting is that she was tired but very determined to do what her father asked her to do. and she believed that she could make it to stormville and that she was strong enough to make the journey. and the important details are that she tamed the horse by her self and that she got congratulated by George Washington.

  2. I think that Sybil believes in independence from the British. I think this because not every person back then would want to go from town to town giving warnings at night time. I think that the physical setting in "A Spectacular Ride" is the muddy roads and all the towns she goes to. I think the emotional setting is bravery, because there could have been a British soldier on the road. I think that an important detail is that Sybil is very determined, because on page one it said "'I can do it,' Sybil declared." This shows that Sybil is determined.

  3. The physical setting is Syble is riding from town to town trying to get everyones attention. and the emotional setting is Syble is on a mission to warn all the people in her town. Her beliefs are she can warn all the people in her town because she called out to every one and nocked on there doors.

  4. I think one belief of Syble is that fighting is good and that you don't have to be afraid to do the right thing. I think this because even when her mother told her it was very dangerous, she said, " I can do it!" This shows that she isn't afraid to do the right thing. the physycle setting is somewhere in new york in 1777. I know this because the text says that it is 1777. the emotional settings brave because syble is brave. An important detail is that the sky didn't look right because this place was burning.

I agree, The fact that a whole village is on fire, and it can be mistaken as the sun, is really scary and is really important.

    The physical setting is that:
Sybil is willing to take the risk of being captured or hurt by outlaws, deserters, and British soldiers. Also She trained Star and he is a good horse. And she is riding from town to town on muddy ,and slippery paths, in the rain , right after her dinner.
My emotional setting is that Her mom is scared for her , but she isn't scared, when she is the one who is in danger.
I think the belief system of Sybil is that, she is not scared, but she is excited.I know she is excited ,because in the text ,her mother just explained all the dangers she has for doing this, and she declares "I'll do it!".
i think an important detail is that Sybil is not getting any money,or is being bribed or anything like that, for doing this, she is doing it for her country , and all she gets is a thanks from George Washington(I think that is pretty amazing)for all that(getting muddy, being tired, risking her-and Star's- life, ect.

  6. The Physical setting is the time period is 1777 in Danbury, Connecticut, and Peekskill, New York with a 16 year old girl named Sybil. The emotional setting is Sybil is tired because the text said "Covered with mud and tired beyond belief, Sybil could barely stay on Star's back as they rode into their own yard close to dawn".She had ridden nearly 40 miles that night."

  7. i think that Sybil's beleavs in being strong and fearless.I know this because she is only 16 and she is going on her horse on a muddy path at nigh just to warn people and i do not think many people then would want to do that. The physical setting is April 26 1777 in NY and there is a 16 year old girl and her named Sybil and she is on her horse star and she is riding on a slipery muddy path from town to town warning the people. The emotional setting is fear and bravery. I know this because Sybil is going out at nigh and warning people that something bad is hapining and that has a lot of fear in it.But also she is being really brave by going out there at nigh.i think a important detail is the setting i know this because there is war going on and if there was no war she would not have been so brave.

  8. Sybil beliefs if she knows her way she can go anywhere. I know this because in the text it said she would go and she also went because she knew her dads derections. This shows that she beliefs if she knows her way she can go anywhere. I know this because she knew where she would go and she was also brave. I know that she was brave was because because there could of been british solders and something bad could happen to her, but she was brave to take a chance. The physical setting is that the time period was 1777 and the day was April 26. It was also in new york where british solders were burning Ridgefield. The Emotional setting is: Sybil feels confident and brave because she wanted to go on a mission - she had to warn people from the British army who intended to burn Danbury, and be she chose to do it. That's way she feels brave. Sybil, also feels confident because she said I wanted to do it with a pride.

  9. I think the belief system in spectacular ride is that a 16 year old girl named Sybil can do it and she is a star. I also think that the emotional setting in the story is that Sybil tried to do thins like she has to set the table for every body ever day and she has to get mud and it spills on her. And the important details in the story is that Sybil has so much siblings and she is the one that has to do the work.

What I've learned so far about historical fiction is that it is based about something in the past. It can also be based on an event that happened but the character is made up. An important detail is that George Washington thanked the main character, Sybil, and that's a big honer for boys but for girl it is an even bigger honer.
The physical setting of this story was the town in Danbury CT, because thats where all the events took place. I have a house very near to that!
The emotional setting is that Sybil was scared and proud because she was honored by George Washington and she was going to deserted towns and the town that was burning with soldiers all over the place.
Probably the biggest detail in A Spectacular Ride is the sky was red from the burning downtown because that is the whole reason why she went on the horse.
The mom believed that the dad had to go to war because she saw the town burning.
These events all took place during the Revolutionary War because it says 1777 which is around that time period, and it also has George Washington in it.

Sybil's family's belief system is, what the british were doing is bad. They also believe that the deed that they asked Sybil to do is dangerous and that it will help their people get ready for the attack. The physical setting in "A Spectacular Ride" is in Danbury, Connecticut. It is windy and rainy and the sky wasn't regular because there was a red glow in the east instead of the west where the sun sets. The emotional settings in the story is the mom worried that the dad might leave and that Sybil might get hurt going to tell everybody to get ready for the attack. The dad is stressed out because he has to get ready for the attack. Sybil is confident that she can go and tell everybody about the attack. Some important details that I saw in "A Spectacular Ride" are, Sybil had to hide on the side of the road so she won't get caught. Also, Sybil had to ride 40 miles. Also, there were 2000 soilders that she had to be aware of. Also, it was muddy and slippery.

The physical setting is in a cottage made of straw and wood. The emotional setting is maybe a drop of sadness and a lot of confidence and worry. I think Sybil believes that if you know the way to go then you are fine. I know this because she said she would go and then her dad tells her were to go and she feels more brave so she does it. I know that she is brave because when she said yes, she would do it, her mom told her that there might be a soldier and he might kill her, but she still went and told everyone that the soldiers were coming and warned them. I think that the important details are that the dad even asked her to go and warned everyone that the soldiers are coming, that Sybil agreed to do it and the mom afterword told her were to go. theses are my important details.

  14. In the short story, “A spectacular ride”, one of Sybil’s belief systems is that if you believe you can do it, then you can do it.
Sybil believed that she could ride on her horse, Star, and tell all the colonists that the war had started. She did a job her mother seemed unsure about. I also think that Sybil believes that the colonies should have independence. She wouldn’t have gone through the slippery stones and mud just for fun. She wants to protect the ones she loves and fight for what she believes in.

The physical setting of the story is during the start of the revolutionary war on April 26, 1777.
I know this because in the story it says: “Afterward, General George Washington gave personal thanks to Sybil for her courageous deed.” George Washington was the general for the patriot’s side.

A big part of why Sybil is famous is because she is a girl. During the revolutionary war and later, women were not as acknowledged as they are now. During that time, if a woman did something that was very manly, people would think they were crazy.

I think the emotional setting in the story is rushed and worrisome, as well as fearful. Sybil is feeling rushed and worried because it is her duty to save her village from British soldiers trying to burn villages. I think that she and everyone else is scared because they know that a war is coming. Maybe they are wondering if their village will get burnt down too.

Two important ideas I noticed are the red sky and the fact that Sybil could barely stay on Star’s back.

I think the red sky is an important detail because if the sun had already set, there would be no light in the sky. That immediately tells me that something is not right. A bit later, I figure out that the red light is fire. Fire is used as a weapon against the patriots. The color red also reminds me of blood. In war blood is spilled when a soldier is killed or wounded. This is another sign that a war will start.

In the story, there is a line that says, “ Sybil could barely stay on Star’s back.”
This tells me that she is riding fast and working hard, so is Star. Both are working hard to save their village. Even in the worst weather, Sybil still went out with will to help everyone. Also, I think the name Star symbolizes something. Star could be the star of the mission, or maybe Star could be a star of the American flag.

  15. Sybil believes that she could do anything for her home, so she dose lots to help. Sybil also believes that she should do what ever it takes to accomplish her goal.
The physical setting is in the 1777 , it is also when people will ride horses to get where ever they need to go.
The emotional setting is fear because
the mom was scared that the dad would warn the village so Sybil took the job.

  16. I think Sybil's belief system is brave. I know this because even though Sybil's mom said it was dangerous Sybil still went. This shows that Sybil is brave. The physical setting is New York in 1777. I also know this because in the text it said Danbury Connecticut and Peekskill, New York also it said April 26 1777. The emotional setting is Bravery. I finally know this because in the text Sybil was being brave.

  17. I think thatthe physical setting is that he is in between Connecticut and Danburyin a town called Ridgefield because in the end of the story it said thatthat the dad is a commander of the army that is in betweenConnecticut and Danburry and he said and he said that there are about two thousand British soldiers heading to Ridgefield that is how I know that they are in Ridgefield what I think is that is that they believe that they could be free and they don't need anyone to control them because end of the story said thatGeneral George Washington thanks sybil for what she did by waking up the soldiers for battle that's how I know that they believe that they could be free from the British I think the emotional setting in this was that sybil had to get all of the people out all the towns in and she had to wake up the shoulders to get ready for battle so she felt like a leader I think that's the emotional setting in this I think the important details in this is that the General Washingtonthanks sybil for what she did by waking up the shoulders and getting them ready for battle and that she had to all the shoulders to wake up and get ready for the battle that's what I think the important details are in the story and also the physical setting and emotional setting also the belief system.

  19. I think Sybil parents are very worried about Sybil, and her getting hurt. I know this because it says "there are other dangers than slippery paths." The physical setting is in a house and down a road in the middle of the night, with a red sky.

I think Sybil believes she can do her dad's job and go warn the men of war. I know this because it says, "I'll go, me and star can do it." An important detail is that her dad had to stay home because if he didn't stay home Sybil would not have to ride to warn the men.

In the short story, ”A Spectacular Ride”, the physical settings are interesting. One of the first physical settings was the red glow in the sky of the town burning. The next one was the first town Sybil rode to. The third was the second town, the small little village. The last two settings were the muddy roads and then the final town, the most important town to deliver the message of war/battle to.

The emotional setting in that was a mix of bravery and fear. Who wouldn’t have been afraid to do something that might get you killed? Sybil was brave for doing that, but it doesn’t mean she wasn’t afraid to do it.

These are the details I found important: 1.Sybil’s father could not go on the journey, 2.Sybil had a horse and was a good rider, and 3.Sybil’s parents picked HER to go on the journey.

i think the time period id around the 1770s or the
    18s
