  1. In the book Becoming Naomi Leon there are quite a lot of juicy themes such as: Don't judge a book by its cover. I know this because Owen in the story has a physical challange and people think that he is dumb or stupid, but Owen is the smartest kid in his class. Another theme in the book is bully's. I know this because Naomi gets bully'ed by fifth graders every day in her school. Another theme in the book is treat people how you want to be treated. I know this because Mimi called Naomi 'trailer trash' and that was super mean because she isn't like the other girls at school. Those are some of the themes in Becoming Naomi Leon.

    2. I think that it was bad that Naomi got bullied. I agree with you there, but I also know that Mimi was getting bullied too and she was probably having a hard time and copying what was being done to her. I think even though someone bullied you you shouldn't bully someone else.

I agree with you Indigo because bulling is not nice and you are right about Grams to because her calling Naomi a 'trailer trash' is very mean.

  2. In the book becoming Naomi leon, i think that the theme is to aways be kind to others and don't treat people different because they look different. One reason i know this because in the book becoming Naomi leon Naomi is being bullied because of her last name,Outlaw. Another reason i know this is that also Owen Naomi's brother looks different and you mite think that he is not as smart but he gets the best grades in his class. The last reason i know this is because in the book Naomi has no friends and she sits in the library to eat lunch with the librarian Mr.Marbel and other kids with out friend. So that is how i know that to be kind and not bullie.

    3. I agree with Nona that bullying others is not right! We should respect others no matter what the other person looks like or dresses like.

  3. i think the authors message in the book becoming naomi leon is that its ok to be different. i know this because in the text owen naomis brother has a physical challenge and yet he is the smartest kid in his second grade class! also i know this because naomi is a unnoticed kid. other then the bullies no one ever notices her at all really but mr. marble invites her to eat her lunch in the back table at the library and she has all these other people who are unnoticed too that sit with her at lunch and she has gram and owen. so that is two reasons i think that the authors message is, its ok to be different!

  4. One of the big the big idea's in Becoming Naomi León
is that Owen (Naomi's brother) has physical problems, his head is tilted even after 3 surgery's, and one of his legs is longer than the other. In the story it said Owen had a lot of infected bug bites that is why he has problems. When I say problems i don't mean bad bud also not good

  6. In the book Becoming Naomi Leon, Naomi's mom's motivation is from Clive her boyfriend. I know this because she changed her name to Skyla Jones. She changed both her first and last name because he told her that she was as beautiful as the sky. Also, Clive became a tattoo because he explained to her that he can make a lot of money that way. I also think that when she acts weird around the kids it has something to do with her relationship with Clive, but I don't yet because I haven't finished the book.

  7. I think that Naomi is spoiled when her mother comes and love's it a lot .But when Skyla mysteriously disappears then Naomi is used to being spoiled so Naomi will have a hard time going back to her "normal" life again.I also think that Gram is unhappy because Naomi and Owen are paying attention to Skyla and not her .Also Naomi and Owen are listening and wearing what Skyla buys them (not that they shouldn't) But Gram probably works hard to make Naomi and Owens clothes and is probably thinking "I worked so hard to make those children clothes and they start wearing the junk that Skyla buys them???I feel like I have worked hard and deserve my work to be appreciated not put aside for next year.

    1. I totaly argree with you the gram is a bit angry but I disagree that she is spoiled. she has not been given nice stuff because all there at least they have clothes. I think they are happy to have not sown clothes. I would be happy to but I would still be grateful of all of the hard work she put into it and still were the clothes she made me. After all she is a hard working GREAT GRANDMA. wow!

  9. There are a lot of themes in the book Becoming Naomi Leon. One of the themes is being bullied. One reason why i think bulling is one of the themes is when Naomi is ridiculed by three 5th graders about her last name Outlaw. As a result, she eats at the library because the librarian lets her and other kids who do not fit in eat their lunch there. Another character called Mimi Mesmaker is being also bullied for not wearing makeup.Being upset by the girls who teas her, Mimi takes her anger out on Naomi, in the library, and calls her "trailer trash ".After that, they never spoke again. These are the reasons why i think that one of the mane themes of the book is being bullied. Thanks for reading.

  11. One of the themes in Becoming Naomi León is personal family relationships. One reason is when Skyla, Owen and Naomi's mother, comes to the trailer Gram is mad because she thinks Skyla will take the kids away from her. Also, I think Skyla had a problem with Naomi's dad because she didn't come to the trailer with him. Skyla has a boyfriend, so maybe she and Naomi and Owen's dad are divorced. And even if they're going to court to decide who the children will live with they might live with a relative for a while. But they have been living with their great grandmother for seven years and I know it doesn't go on for that long. But we're only at the second chapter so I'm not sure if the dad is alive, but even if the dad is dead they would probably still live with their mother. Naomi has a very different life than I have that's why I think in the book Becoming Naomi León that a theme is family relationships.

  12. I think that the author’s message in Becoming Naomi Leon is no matter what you should believe in yourself. I know this because in the text she keeps not standing up for herself and if some one is not standing up for herself that means she is scared and dose not believe she can stand up to the 5 graders. The 2 5graders keep bulling her by making fun of her last name, outlaw. They keep saying oh no! Is this a stake up? Or shouldn’t you be in jail? And Naomi does not do anything to stand up for herself. She does not believe she can stand up to them. This is why I think the message is to believe in you. I think further in the book she will be able to stand up for herself. That is what I think is the big idea.

  13. Naomi has a problem dealing with all the kids bullying her and she's taking advice from other people like the librarian mr.Marble but there all not working , I know this because she has been saying in the text "none of the plans worked". In chapter 2 . She has been making soap carvings or animals she does this because she is stressed from school and she makes the carving to calm her.

  14. I think that a theme is FITTING IN. I think this because she sits at a table in the library with other kids who don't fit in. She doesn't fit in because her brother, Owen who had something bad happen to him in the past. Also she is made fun of by her last name, Outlaw.

I want to add on to you.
Naomi sits in the library where all the kids who do not fit in eat lunch. This is an important part in the story because if fitting in is one of the themes, then this will show up throughout the book. This could help us figure out what could happen to Naomi later in the book.

  15. I think in the book becoming Naomi leon [using my sister's email] I feel like Skyla doesn't really care about but she wants to care about Naomi and Owen because Skyla gave them as babies also she looks young because she dyed her hair maroon her boyfriend is named clive and is a tattoo artist, and was wearing a leather jacket, also she hasn't visited Naomi and Owen in 7 years and she came anyway.

  16. I think a big idea in Becoming Naomi Leon is Naomi feels unlike the other kids at her school. One reason I know this is because Mimi Messmaker called Naomi “trailer trash.” After that, Naomi never talked to Mimi Messmaker again. Another reason I think Naomi feels unlike the other kids is because all the other girls spend their free time on makeup and sleepovers. Naomi spends her free time on soap carving and making lists. Another reason I think Naomi feels unlike the other kids is because she has a physically challenged brother. That makes her feel like she comes from a un-normal family. That is how I know Naomi feels unlike the other kids.

not play or hang out with anyone ,I'd say her best

  17. In the book: Becoming Naomi León by Pam Muñoz Ryan I found these themes.
One theme in the book becoming Naomi León is Family.
My text evidence for this is that Naomi’s family is different from other kid’s families. Naomi’s mom and dad went away from her when she was very young. Other people have a mom or dad to live with while Naomi lives with Gram, her great grandmother. Her brother Owen is physically challenged. His head is tilted to his side and one leg is shorter than the other, so she may worry about Owen.
Another theme I recognized in the story is friendship. Naomi has no friends, As a matter of fact she has only one friend - Mr. Marble, the librarian. I think he counts as a friend because he lets Naomi and the other lonely kids eat in the library when they’re not supposed to eat there. Friends do nice things for each other and may break rules to help them. We can assume from this behavior that
Mr. Marble has kind personality and is a good friend.
I also found that fitting in is a theme in this book. I know this because Naomi is getting teased about her last name, Outlaw. Getting teased is like not fitting in. When you get teased other people want to tease you, and the more people tease you, the more you are popular for being unpopular.
Another reason why I know this is because in the story, Naomi mentions that she and all the other kids like her go to the library to eat lunch. Naomi is a kid who is mistreated and disliked, that makes her not fit in. If all the other kids are like her, they must not fit in either. This makes fitting in a theme.

    1. I agree with you and would like to add on that because Naomi does not fit in, she might feel discouraged and not really believe in herself. Also one of her worries is that gram will die, or Owen will never be the same. all her worries might discourage her too.

    3. I do agree about the family, but I want to add on about the friendship part. The Librarian Mr. Marble is more like a kind of person who you can spill anything to and you can go deep into personal stuff and he'll understand. But he is still a friend.

  18. A Theme in ''Becoming Naomi Leon '' is being abandoned . I know this
because the book says''I didn't know what caused it all but when
I came to Gram, my hands were shaking and I didn't talk much'' which
shows that she was a wreck because her parents had given her up in a bad condition.

Also in the book Gram says ''Naomi was selectively mute
and Owen had flea bites from head to toe''Which shows Skyla their mother neglected Owen and Naomi.

  19. I think a character trait in becoming Naomi leon is that Naomi is a little shy and does not really trust new people. I think this because, one, her hands were shaking and she was selectively mute when she first moved in with gram. this shows that she was not used to it and nervous. this also shows that Naomi does not like change. two, she hesitated to hug or even go near her mom. this shows that she is nervous around new people and a bit shy. third, Naomi doesn't even really try to play which the babies or talk with the teenagers at all. this shows that she is shy. also a big idea is that Naomi does not believe in herself. I think this because in the book Naomi says that Mimi Mess-maker is nobody in school JUST LIKE HER. that means she thinks she is nobody and that means she does not believe in herself.

  20. One theme in Becoming Naomi Leon is do not judge a book by its cover. I know this because Owen has physical challenges and people bully him because he has a short neck a short leg and a frog-like voice. But he has good grades in school and he is the most advanced in class. Another theme is you dont need parents. I think that is because she does not have parents and she lives with her grandma. She moved in with her when she was very young.

  21. One of the big ideas is that the Outlaw’s have a lot of problems. They do not have money to pay for a house. Owen has physical challenges because the insect bites made his leg lower than it’s supposed to be and his head is tilt down. Naomi had mutism and could not speak for 2 years.

  22. I think the main problem in the book is that Naomi lea'on is getting bullied by boys in the school they make fun of her last name outlaw and Naomi's mom Skyla has not seen Naomi or Naomi's brother Owen in 7 years. I think Naomi gets made fun of because of her brother Owen his head leans over to the side and one leg is shorter then the other and ever body in his class makes fun of him because of his look but he is very very smart. The third problem is Skyla the mom changed her name all because of her boy friend,he calls her sky. Gram Skylas mother that took care of Owen and Naomi for 7 years she was not happy that Skla changed her name.

  23. In Becoming Naomi Leon, one of the themes in the story is fitting in, just like in 4th Grade Rats. One of the reasons I say this is because in the book, we see that Naomi eats lunch in the library because Mr Marble lets Naomi eat in the library and he only does that to kids who are not fitting in in school. The other reason I say this is because Owen is in 2nd grade, and has disabilities, but he has the best grades in class. That means that it doesn't matter how you look, it only matter who you are. My last reason is that Naomi is getting teased by several 5th graders because of her last name, Outlaw.

  24. Naomi's family moved to another place.

  25. One of the Authors theme in becoming Naomi Leon is that we should not treat people with disabilities mean. They are smart people too. For example Owen has physical disabilities and yet goes to school and is one of the smartest kid in his class!

One of Naomi Leon's beliefs is that everyone should have a mother because she didn't talk until she was six because she didn't really know her mom. Also, she had to get a counselor to help her talk because she didn't really know her mom. Also, in the book Grams yelled at Skyla " your daughter had to get a counselor to help her talk because she didn't really know you!".
