Bud, Not Buddy

What's the difference between knowledge and wisdom? How do you become knowledgeable or wise?

In what ways is Bud knowledgeable? Is he wise?

Use examples from the story to support your opinion.

  1. To be knowledgeable you have to practice reading, practice writing and practice math. You have to study, observe things that happen and more. To be wise you have to have experience with a lot of things. The difference is that you learn to have knowledge and you have to be experienced to have wisdom. Bud has wisdom because he has experienced a lot of the time of the great depression and is living on the lam with no parents or guardians. Bud also has knowledge because he manages to get out of every problem because when he missed the train he went to the library and decided to walk all the way to Grand Rapids.

  2. "Wisdom is the ability to discern or judge what is true, right, or lasting. Knowledge, on the other hand, is information gained through experience, reasoning, or acquaintance. Knowledge can exist without wisdom, but not the other way around. One can be knowledgeable without being wise." The dictionary says.
I say "Wisdom is something that has happened to you, that you know from doing it,not by asking questions or looking things up. Knowledge is something that you learned from someone or something else.

    1. (Sorry I also meant to include this)
Bud is wise ,AND has knowledge.
      I know this because:
Bud learned from his mom, that when one door closes another one opens. And he is wise because,
He made a whole book of lying and things. He made that book to remember all the things that can keep you alive in the depression.

  3. Bud is wise because he has taken care of himself for 4 years! His mom died when he was 6, and he has made friends but...
Unfortunatley he has lost them because he is on the lam.

  4. Knowledge is information that you can get through school or museums or books. Wisdom comes from experiences and life lessons. Sometimes wisdom comes with age. Bud doesn't have as much basic knowledge as kids who have parents and teachers to teach them. I know this because he doesn't go to school or museums and his mom died and his father abandoned him so they cannot teach him. He has some knowledge about how to survive. He has a book of rules. Bud does have wisdom. He understands that when one door closes another door open which is a metaphor for saying that when something bad happens, something good might come out of it. That's wise. He was at the library and the mission already ended so he couldn't get any food (door closed), but another door opened when the librarian gave him a sandwich.

  5. Knowledge is something you need to make you know stuff and make you smarter. Bud uses knowledge and books from the library to help him find his dad. Wisdom makes you know stuff about everything and your very smart. Bud doesn't know stuff about everything but he is very smart about stuff and is a very good influence on people.

I think the deference of being knowledgeable and wise is knowledgeable means you know a lot of facts and are really smart. On the other hand I think being wise means seeing a lot of people and know them good and also having a lot of experience out in the world.

I think Bud has a lot of experience because he lived by himself for four years. Also he has bean to three foster homes. That shows that he has seen three families, house. Bud is also on the lam and you need to be wise on the lam because you have to think about breakfast and dinner. An example of Bud getting wise is when he came late for the mission he needed a pretend family get to the mission. Next time he came to the mission on time to get food but his pretend family wasn't there.

For all those reasons that is why I think Bud is wise. To get more wise you can learn from your mistakes like Bud did.

  7. Wise is what you can be, knowledge is what you can have. A wise person learns from mistakes. Knowledge is the kind of stuff you get form school like reading, writing and math. Knowledge is knowing your fifty states, wisdom is knowing your way around a place you have not been to before. I think Bud is wise because he is on the lam and you need to be wise or else you'll get lost. That relates to what i said before about wisdom and knowledge and the fifty states.

thats the difference between knowledge and wisdom. It is also why Bud is wise.

  8. Having knowledge means that you learn and therefor become more intellectual. You can use things around you to help you learn. The word Know means to be aware of what you observe or information that you have learned. The word Knowledge comes from the word Know, that is why they have similar meanings.
Wisdom is when you learn from experiences and have been through a lot. The older you get, the wiser you are. For example, if you were in fifth grade, you wouldn’t know about High School because you haven’t experienced it yet.
In a way, Knowledge and wisdom are the same. You are smarter from both and both come from observing what you experience, but in a way, they are different too.
Not all your knowledge comes from observing. Some of it comes from information that you find out by reading or writing. With wisdom, most of the learning that you do comes from experience.
    So knowledge is in wisdom.
If you learn something from experience, by observing, you get smarter and can learn. You find out how to use resources around you to help you.
In Bud not Buddy, Bud is a bit wise and a bit knowledgeable. He is wise because he has been through a lot and if he ever comes across a problem a second time, the problem solving would probably be easier. When his mother told him not to worry, but he did worry because he knew that when an adult tells you not to worry:
“You better hurry up and start ‘cause you’re running late.”
And since knowledge is in wisdom, He is both to a degree. After all, Bud is only ten years old.

  9. knowledge means information like its year 2016 thats knowledge but wisdom means to make good disjoins with the information that they have. i think bud is knowledgeable i know this because first he knows when anof is anof like when he slapped todd if he would have gone farther and hit him again that would not have bin wise and now i am going to tell you how this ( hitting todd) relates to bud being wise, if he would of hit todd again he would not be wise because that is not a good thing to do and todd would have punched him back or something like that.

  10. I think that Bud is very wise because Bud is the one who is trying to go to Chicago to find miss Mil,Bud is the one who slap under a tree in till morning for the next train to come and if he get's on the train he is going to go to his dad. Bud is strong so if the train dose not come he will walk. I love the book bud, not buddy!

  11. Knowledge is knowing facts that have already been discovered, like that Marie Curie discovered radio activeness. Wise is having great advice, knowing what to do in situations, being resourceful. Like know that when someone hits you you shouldn’t hit them back. Bud must be wise because he’s been living by himself for 4 years. I don’t think Bud is very knowledgable. I think this because Bud thought he could walk from Flint to Chicago. That is about 100 miles. Bud probably didn’t go to school, and learn how to do math, learn history and stuff like that.

  12. i think knowledge and wiseness are different because knowledge is smart basically. and if you were a person and you were wise you would be intelligent and a person who makes good decisions. i think you become both of them by learning and going to school and maybe even traveling. i think bud is not wise because he makes bad dissuasions like almost killing the amoses. and i think he does have knowledge because he makes up good plans sometimes.

  13. the Difference between knowledge and wisdom is you can get knowledge by reading books, math and by writing, you can get wisdom by learning your lessons and making smart choices. I think Bud is wise because he is on the lam and he has been living by himself, not many kids would be on a lam. To be knowledgeable you have to go to school and learn. To be wise is, to have a lot of expience with something for example Bud is used to going to foster homes he has been to three different foster homes.

  14. I think bud is wise because he has a lot of experience. Bud is known to be knowledgeable because ever since his mother died, he sort of had to figure stuff out on his own. He didn’t have anyone to support him. People thought he was a skinny baby, so he got beaten up by a lot of people. He had to toughen up and learn when to fight back.

  15. Wise is about making good decisions and doing good things for your life, and others. But unlike that, being knowledgeable is more about surviving, even if it means cheating and lying, and those two things aren’t the same as making good decisions, I think. Bud is knowledgeable, not wise, because he had to lie to get to the Mission with his fake family to get food. I don’t think Bud is wise, because he doesn’t always make good decisions and his decisions aren’t always considerate. Like when he made Todd pee in his bed, and that’s not very considerate even though Todd stuck a pencil up his nose and made him sleep in a shed with hornets and fish.

  16. The difference between wisdom and knowledge is that when you have wisdom you are living through what you know and being wise. An example from the text is that Bud lived through being in a foster home so he also knows about that from his life. Also, Bud lived not having a father so he knows about living that too. Knowledge is when you know something because someone helped you learn it by teaching you. An example from the text is that Bud knows about the Civil War because someone taught him about it, but he did not live through it.

  17. I think knowledgeable means that you leran by reading books doing math an wrting alot plus leraning history from the past thats what it means and there dirffeent is that knowleageable you have and wisdom you gain so bud has that because he had to go though his momma going away he had to tack care of him self.

  18. The difference between knowledge and wisdom is that if you are knowledgeable you are basically smart. You know a lot of things like arithmetic and reading and writing. But that is not the same as being wise. If you are wise you make good decisions in life and you know what to do in hard situations. Bud is I think a very knowledgeable child. I do not think though that he is very wise. I do not think this because, even though he's made some good decisions, I think he's done a few pretty stupid things. For example, he tried to knock down what he thought was a vampire bat (a pretty dumb thing to think about in the first place) and ended up getting stung by hornets all over because he didn't bother to check if it was really what he thought it was before trying to get rid of it. Of course nobodies perfect, but this wasn't a very wise thing to rio at all. You can become knowledgeable by practicing and trying your hardest until the thing you want to do becomes easy. I don't think there is any possible way to become wise, you just sort of are or are not that way.

  19. The difference between knowledge and wisdom is knowledge means you know a lot of stuff, your smart and they teach you knowledge in School. Wisdom means you pick the right choices and know A lot. Bud is knowledgeable when he does math in the library to see how long it will take to get to the Grand Rapids. He is wise when there were hornets and he had two choices, one, stay and get stung, two, go on the lam and get out of here. He chose number two and this is why he is wise. This shows that knowledge and wisdom are different.

  20. Wisdom is something that someone can gain by having a lot of adventures. Knowledge is when you learn through studying something. The difference of these things is one you study and the other is something you have when you have a lot of knowledge. Bud knows how to survive because he knew he would have to get on the train and run as fast as he could to get on to the train. Bud says "you never know when you'll be sleeping under a Christmas tree". And this represents how he is wise, because he brought a blanket because he's smart enough to know you could need a blanket when you're in a situation like his.

I agree Bea. Another difference between knowledge and wisdom is... knowledge is something you learn from school(as you basically said). wisdom is something you learn more and more from mistakes. great job.

  21. The difference between knowledge and wisdom is that knowledge is when you know something that you have been taught. Wisdom is when you have experience, knowledge, and good judgement. Bud is knowledgeable when he chose to make Todd wet his bed for revenge on the Amoses. He was wise then because his revenge idea was not too big and not too small it was just right.

  22. I think i like the thesis statement,Bud lies to survive and its true like when he couldnt get in the mission or when he lied to lefty luis to me i understand bud sometimes I have to do the same thing lying is a bad but you do it to survive

HOW BUD HAS TO LIE TO SURVIVE
    1. I think Bud has to lie to survive because when he was going to get whipped, he had to come up with a excuse to not get whipped.
    2. I also think that because he was lying/pretending that he was part of this family, though they played along too. he had to lie for this reason so he could get breakfast at the mission.
    3. Lastly, I think this because he has to make up a lot of lies to get himself to Grand Rapids to find his father. we don't know, but maybe Herman E. Calloway is not Bud's father.
