Martin Luther King Jr. by Gwendolyn Brooks

Martin Luther King Jr.
by Gwendolyn Brooks

A man went forth with gifts.

He was a prose poem.
He was a tragic grace.
He was a warm music.

He tried to heal the vivid volcanoes.
His ashes are
    reading the world.

His Dream still wishes to anoint
the barricades of faith and of control.

His word still burns the center of the sun,
    above the thousands and the
    hundred thousands.

The word was Justice. It was spoken.

So it shall be spoken.
So it shall be done.

  1. I think the author's purpose to writing this poem is that Mr.king was the beginning of our journey to freedom. That he was there to inspire us to make the right choices. To help us get ideas on where to start on our way to freedom. This poem made me feel very, very sad because all that stuff Mr.king said, and did,to STOP racism, to this very day,It continues.Racism continues. But at the same time,I feel happy,Because MLK was not the only one who made a change,MLK was not the only one to stop SOME of the racism,There were more people who wanted to make a difference, more people who wanted the racism to stop,More people who wanted the sexism to stop, more people who wanted the bigotry to stop. The meaning of this poem was for people to understand how MLK helped us and even though he was gone,he was still there, watching us to see if we made good choices.

  2. I think the author’s purpose for writing this poem is to tell it’s reader that though MLK Jr. is dead, his dream can and will come true. I know this because in the text it says “The word was Justice. It was spoken. So it shall be spoken. So it shall be done.” Another piece of evidence I have that proves this Author’s purpose is that in the text it says “His word still burns in the center of the sun, above the thousands and hundred thousands.”
This poem made me feel good and reminds me of the fact that MLK Jr. did not accomplish his dream, but we can accomplish it for him. It makes me feel that way because the text talks a lot about what he tried to heal and what he tried to strengthen. One example is when the poem says “He tried to heal the vivid volcanoes.”, another is “His dream still wishes to anoint the barricades of faith and control.”
The metaphor “His ashes are reading the world.” stood out to me because it is similar to saying “Though MLK Jr. is dead, he still watches over the earth.” and that can encourage people to finish making his dream become a reality.

  3. I think the authors purpose of this poem is to honor all MLK has done for the world and also I think she was trying to make people realize all he has done. And also trying to inspire people to take his place and continue to fulfill MLKs dream.

This poem made me feel sad because it reminded me that there is still racism, sexism, and agism in the world. But it also makes me proud of MLK because this poem reminded me of everything MLK has done for the world.

the metaphor that stood out to me most is when the author said "his word still burns the center of the sun, above the thousands and the hundred thousands " because it reminds me that all that MLK has done has affected hundreds of thousands of peoples life in a good way.

  6. This poem made me feel inspired to help someone else. Right now I just want to do something nice for someone. I think that the author's purpose to write this poem is to inspire other people to simply help out someone less fortunate than others. I think that Martin Luther King Jr. is thinking that we will help out someone. What stood out to me is when he said “Tried to heal the vivid volcanoes.” He really meant “Healing the people.”

  12. I think the authors purpose for writing this poem is so future generations will know the importance of what he did for us and that someday, everyday his dream will come true. That the world is always in need of change but people with good hearts and faith can make that change.

This poem made me feel like we should make a change, that we should live without violence, with equity instead. We should make better choices and care for everybody. The homeless shouldn’t be homeless if people made better decisions and stand up for what’s right.

I think the metaphor that stands out to me is His word still burns the center of the sun
this stands out to me because it about how much of a role model he was and a leader and somebody to look up to. It also shows how important his words are, that they are as much light to us as the sun.

  13. I think the authors purpose in this poem is to be fare and be equal because if we be equal everything will change then it was before back then and my second authors purpose is we should care about MLK.

This poem made me feel sad and happy at the same time because back then it was way different white and black woman was treated different and it made me happy too because if MLK haven't changed the world it would not be like this.

The poem made me feel that we need more justice. It was tragic back then that people didn't have equal rights.

Probably the purpose of the poem on the top is about when Martin Luther King changed the whole history. He changed segregation to equal. This poem made me ultra-embarrassed. the reason why I get embarrassed is because that everything are created equal and girls and boys together. I hate girls more than anything else in the world. I only love my family and my ancestors. I not used to this school right now. It would take ages to the last day of school, which is my birthday. My imaginary friend, Oswald the rabbit, is a imaginary friend. That metaphor stood out to me it was "His dream still wishes to anoint the barricades of faith and of control" I liked it because "anoint" means to make pure or holy.

  16. I think the author's purpose is to tell people that even though Martin Luther King is gone, the things he did are still here and even though he didn't finish, we can finish for him.

It made me feel happy and protected because he still watches over us and I know with him watching over us we will be safe. And I felt sad because he wasn't here to finish what he started.

The metaphor that stood out to me is "his word still burns the the center of the sun, above the thousands and the hundred thousands." It stood out because his words are so hot that we will never forget it. I think that was really cool.

  17. That poem meant like Martin is not gone but he’s gone at the same time u know what I’m saying. It’s meaning full to all people and for all senior citizens. Back then people would judge ‍⚖️ people by the color of there skin and today people judge people by there ♥️ and his words still standing in the middle of the sun that’s means like people think that’s very very important exactly like the sun is ‼️

The poem made me feel tragic because he had a life that was cut short.

  22. The author's purpose for writing this poem is to tell you that MLk is no longer living but his words will always be alive and with us.The poem made me feel a sense of tragic because how he fought for justice and never gave up. He kept fighting for freedom and equality and defended the nation by putting his life on the line.I am very inspired for what he did for our nation he was one brave man! A metaphor that stood out to me was "His word still burn the center of the sun above the thousand and hundred thousands that was justice it was spoken. This metaphor meant that MLK words will never be forgotten and his legacy will forever live on. One thing I agreed with was he believed in justice for all!!The nation was anointed by Dr.King presence and his vivid imagination for the world. Al he wanted was for all to be treated fairly. I thought this poem was great!

  26. This picture was taken in 2010 in NYC. This picture is of me and my beloved sister. We are both wearing polkadot outfits. I am wearing red and white polkadot shirt with pants. My sister was wearing the same thing in a different color. My sister had twist in her hair and I had two space buns. We both were hugging in the photo. It inspires me to write because I love to write about my family. I love to write about my sister because she's funny, and kind. My sister is very outgoing and fun to play with everyday. It gives me a reason to write about our time together.
