Black History Civil Rights Freedom Fighters

Who did you choose as your freedom fighter mentor and why? How does their life inspire you?

  1. I chose Diane Nash, leader of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee as my Black History Freedom Fighter Mentor.
The reason I chose this person is because I saw her in the graphic novel MARCH by John Lewis and she seemed like a very interesting freedom fighter. Had she not gone to Nashville for college, she would not have found out what segregation truly was. Her life inspires me because she never, ever questioned the nonviolent way of protesting and remained committed to it and understood that her life was at stake but did not let that scare her. She and SNCC wanted to create a beloved community and always asked themselves if it was the loving thing to do before a demonstration.

  3. I chose MLK,as my black history freedom
fighters mentor. Why I chose him is because
of his I had a dream speech. Even though that was the last speech he ever wrote,it
inspired me to look up to him more. He made me realize just how much we meant to him. He fought with very strong words and stood by his words and his belief. Dr. King is a hero. He's my hero. How his
life inspired me is by opening up my heart To look at everyone the same to love everyone equally and to understand the word patients because that what he was. He also made interested in wanting to
look more into his life and to know that
all of the things that he did was important to get us where we are today,
and to fight the same way that he did.

  5. I chose Lorraine Hansberry because she made a play called: "A Raisin in the sun".

Lorraine Hansberry's important part in life was when she made a play called:" A Raisin in the sun".This part of her life was important because, Black people would ignore the theater because the theater ignored them. What I mean by what I said is,the theater would not have black people in them. When Lorraine Hansberry made the play "A Raisin in the sun", Black people came to the theater. As James Baldwin said:" I never saw so many black folks in the theater."Lorraine Hansberry inspires me because when she made that play called "A Raisin in the sun", Black people was respected and was inspired to go to the theater to star in plays or being them.

  6. I chose Harriet Tubman as my mentor because after she escaped slavery she risked her life to save others and doing that is like putting yourself in front of a train to save strangers and family members. The amount of compassion and empathy that takes is crazy. And thats why I picked her as my mentor.

Her life inspires me to be a nicer and mor compassionate person and to think about others.

  10. I chose to write about Jackie Robinson. I Chose Jackie Robinson because he helped with the civil rights movement and he went down in history. He inspires me one hes a baseball player and i LOVE baseball and two because he broke the color barrier. I read an article that said his white team mates didn't like him and other teams would treat him bad. He inspires me to be brave like he is.

  12. I would choose Jackie Robinson because he did not just stay and run away. One time he was at a gas station and went into a bathroom. Then the white manager said "what are you doing in there? He said "using the toilet". Then he said "You can't go in there" Then he said then we'll get 100 gallons of gas at another place. He inspired me because he stood up for himself, and had a 9 year sports career.

  13. I chose Katherine Johnson because I love space, and math and, well, I just love them both a lot. Her life inspires me to stand up for what's right and pursue goodness in everyone. Her story is super cool, none of her family could know the great things she was doing they only knew she worked at NASA. (Actually nobody could know what she did.)

I chose to write Frederick Douglass. I chose Frederick Douglass as my mentor because he escaped slavery in Maryland and became a abolitionist in Massachusetts and in New York. He inspires me because: #1 he created a newspaper called the North Star. That newspaper said that slaves should be in the Union and the US and the Confederate States Of America should be united. #2: Frederick Douglass wants to end slavery although he was born a slave. His work as a reformer is to attack on Jim Crow who dressed up a a black actor and Jim Crow's laws who should've end slavery. I went to History.com and found a short article about Frederick Douglass. It mostly inspires me to end slavery.

  15. I chose Alice walker because she is an excellent writer, she acted in the civil rights movement, and she was brave enough to be the first legally married interracial couple to live in Mississippi.

I chose her because I like to make up stories and she is a celebrated author. She is an activist too and she protests against war, such as the war in Iraq. She also wrote against Donald Trump.

  16. I chose David Walker (not) because he has the same name as my dad but because he loved to write. He would always write down his speeches and say them to a big crowd. Some people might of disagree with him but t9 me he was a great man. His own dad was in slavery and he tryed and tryed and tryed until his dad was out of slavery David was always nice to people he would never give u he would never stand aside to let weak and starving people fight for there rights . One day when I grow up I want to be a civil rights leader also

  17. My freedom fighter mentor, Jackie Robinson, is very important to me because some of my teammates or favorite players are African-American. I chose Jackie Robinson because he has shown me how to not fight back to people who scream insults at you.

He was the first black person to play in the major leagues. When he first started many people did not like him including some of his teammates. And then he peacefully did not respond to them and then people realized what a good player he was and that's how he became a baseball legend.

  19. I chose Rosa Parks because she was brave when she did not give up her seat on the bus. If i was her i would give up the seat because i don’t want to prison. Also after Rosa got arrested, black people were not giving up there seats on the bus. Rosa was really brave doing what she did and not giving up her seat. I don’t think if i would do anything to break the law now and back then.

  21. My Black History Freedom Fighter Mentor is Jackie Robinson.
I chose Jackie Robinson because he shows that no matter how hard people push or disagree with you, you should keep on moving towards your goal.
Jackie Robinson's life inspired me, because he was the first-ever Major League's black baseball player. And he was a really good one, too!

  22. My Freedom Fighter mentor is Rosa parks..
I picked Rosa Parks because she was the first lady of civil rights movements. She refused to give up her seat One day coming home after a long day of work to a white man in the colored section. She was thrown in jail.
I think she was very brave for doing that. I want to be brave like her one day when the time comes for me to stand up to my bully.

  23. I chose Bill Coffin and Richard Heitler as my black history freedom fighters. They were both freedom riders.

The reason why I chose these two freedom riders is because one is someone I know and the other one I am related to. I think it's inspiring to have someone I'm related to who did something that was dangerous in order to stand up for what they thought was right. They make me feel that I shoujld be brave and stand up for what I think is right. I hope I can do the same thing and I can stand up fro what's right even if it makes me unpopular. I ant to be just like them even if it costs me, at least it is right. That's what Bill Coffin and my friend Finny's grandfather did.

  24. The Freedom Fighters I chose are Richard and Mildred Loving. They were an interracial couple just like my parents. If it weren’t for their fight and struggle my parents may not have been able to marry legally. Then I wouldn’t be here. They inspire me because they fought a system for the right to be married and raise their family. I believe that you should be able to marry whoever you love. Richard and Mildred wanted to live in their home state of Virginia. They were banned from living there legally as a couple. They fought that too. I also believe you should be able to live where ever you want as well. Everything they did was a true fight for freedom.
