Myself in Metaphors

Read the poem, "Myself in Metaphors" by Joseph O. Legaspi.
Click the pic below to read the poem again.

The author uses lots of metaphors to describe himself in this poem. A metaphor is a figure of speech in which two unlike things are compared.

1. After reading this poem, do you think the speaker likes the way he looks? What clues does he give you about his feelings?

2. What do you think the speaker means in the last line when he says, "I am my world, and of the world?"

3. Write your own metaphor to describe yourself.

  1. I think the speaker does like the way he looks. He says that his eyes are luminous. He uses the word admire when he’s speaking about himself. Another reason I know he likes himself is that he doesn’t use negative words to describe himself.
In the last line when the speaker says” I am my world and of tge world” I think he means that he is unique and an important part of the world.

  2. I think the speaker likes the way he looks because he says he says “I admire the canyons of my ears, the slopes of my chin, my cheeks’.”, which shows he likes the way he looks.
I think when the speaker says “I am of my world, and of the world.”, he is saying his part of the world is his but he still is part of a bigger world.
One metaphor to describe myself is “my arms long snakes, their mouths gripping things”.

    1. I also think that "My eyes are luminous bodies of water, reflecting the sun." is a clue because it's a compliment.

  4. I think that Joseph O. Legaspi , really love the way he look because he didn't say anything negative things about his self. What he mean about the last line is that he look at each body part as a land but when he says of this world, he mean that everyone have their own world but , they're still apart of this world that they live in. My eyelash are like leaves that protect my eyes.

  5. I think the speaker does like the way he looks because he said that he admire the canyons of his ears, and if he admires it, that means he likes the way he looks. I think when the speaker says, “I am my world, and of the world,” he means he is one world in a bigger world. One metaphor to describe myself would be I am worse than a pig playing video games for games the first time I play.

  6. I think he's thinks he is beautiful because the place is used to describe his face are beautiful places. When he says I am my world end of the world I think he means that everybody has their own world and they're all different. One metaphor that describes my eyes is my eyes are like an emerald pool.

  7. I think that the speaker in the poem really likes the way he/she looks because he/she says “My eyes are luminous bodies of water, reflecting the sun.” and “My face is where I live. My forehead is an open field. In this poem Joseph O. Legaspi used metaphors in lots of his lines.

I think that the speaker means that he/she is different than any person in the world when saying “I am my world.” I think the speaker means that he/she is part of the world by saying “and of the world.”

My metaphor is “I am a speakerphone.” I chose this because people are always saying that I talk a lot.

  8. I do not think the speaker likes the way he looks. He when he says he admires the canyons of his ears, he is describing how big his ears are. He also says that the furry animals of his eyebrows graze and it sounds like his eyebrows are very thick and bushy. The speaker also says that his face is the globe. Globes are big and round so that means he's saying 'my face is big and round.' When he says that he is his world, he means he looks like the world around him. A metaphor that describes me is 'my skin is snow in winter' because I am very pale.

  9. I think he likes the way he looks because in the poem he describes his self a good way not a bad way so it means that he likes the way he looks. when he says I am my world, and of the world I think it means hes a very unique person. two metaphors that describe me is 1: I am very short 2: I am a quiet kid.

  10. I think the speaker likes the way he looks because he said “I admire the canons of my ears,” this shows that he likes the way they look. He also said that about his chin and cheeks. I also know this because he says that his eyes are luminous bodies water. This shows that he is complimenting his eyes.

I think the speaker means that he is his own world, like he doesn’t depend on anybody but he is part of everybody.

A metaphor to describe myself is My eyes are the stormy sky, blanketed with clouds.

  11. He thinks he is good looking just the way he is. He also doesn't need any hate and hate will never bring him down. I think that because in the poem it says, I am my world, and of my world. Another metaphor Joseph O. Legaspi said was, My eyes are luminous bodies of water, reflecting the sun. These two sentences mean that he made is own world that everybody is fair and there's equality in the air every single day. He also shows that hate won't get to his mind or heart. He's tough on the inside and out but still is a super calm, kind and generous man.

What I think the speaker means is that he has is own world where everybody is appreciative about each other. That line also means there is a world full of hate and negativity but still has designed his own kind world where there's no race that isn't equal and that there's no sexism or ageism.

My eyes are the color of bark of a oak tree.

  12. In the poem Myself in Metaphors I think he is complementing himself because each word he is saying is a complement and an example is "if each strand of my head is a star/my head is its own galaxy" or "my eyes are luminous bodies/of water, reflecting the sun". These sound like complements to himself.

"I am my world" means he can do whatever he wants and "and of this world" means he comes from here.

I am a warm spring breeze blowing on a tomato leaf.

I think that the speaker likes himself. I have no clues because this poem is kind of tedious with only words. I think that "I am my world and of the world" meant that he is saying about our world and his own world.

My metaphor is "I am a mathematician." This is kind of my favorite one because one of my classmates say that I'm a smart math person whenever we do a vocabulary test(or math test) on Friday sometimes.

  14. I think the speaker likes the way he looks because in the text he says "I admire the canyons of my ears". A clue he gave me about his feelings are"I am my own world". I think what he means when he says "I am my world, and of the world"is the part of the world he takes part of every day.

  15. I think the speaker likes the way he is because in the text it said"I admire the canyons of my ears'" this why I know that the speaker like him self how he look's.
I also know this because he said"his eye's are luminous bodies of water."
That is how I know he likes the way he look's.

I think he mean's that he is his own world, like he doesn't depend on anybody but he is also part of everybody else.

A metaphor for myself is my eyes are the shiny olive.
I think is my eyes because it represent me the most.

  16. He likes the way he looks because he said his eyes are luminous of water that reflect the sun (I put that in my own words) and his forehead is a field and fields are really pretty. A metaphor for me is that im tall like a tree and as tough as a rock

  17. I think the author likes how he looks because he said in the poem, "I admire the canyons of my ears". This shows that the author likes his appearance because I admire means I look at my ears and I am proud of them.

In the last line of the poem, I think the speaker means he is what makes his world and that he is also part of the world.

These are some metaphors about myself:
My nose is a hill, my ears are roses, my lips are two roads and my hair is a lion's mane.

  18. I think he likes the way he looks because he said, each strand of my hair is a star and stars are nice to look at so it would be nice to look at them. I think he likes the way he looks because he said my forehead is an open field and in my opinion fields are nice to look at. I think what the speaker means by I am world and of the world is that I have my world that's all about me and I am part of the world.
My metaphor about me is: I smile roses.

  19. I think the speaker likes the way he looks because he says, " my eyes are luminous bodies of water." Lumininous means very bright. I also know this because the speaker says, "I admire the canyons in my nostrils." I think this last line , I am my world and of the world" means I am me and a part of the world.
My Metaphor about me: My head is a bucketful of nourishment. My eyes are everywhere, bright in the darkness. My body is the ground of the earth. My arms are machines that work for me. My legs are my car. I am me. Let the world see.

  20. I think the speaker likes the way he looks too. I admire the canyons of my ears the slopes of my chin and cheeks which means that the person likes the shape of his face or his profile. I am of the world means that he will act the way he does his normal self and that he belongs to the world just like anyone else does.
    My metaphor about me:
I am brittle sometimes I have a short fuse. This means I easily get emotional and easily angry. But I am trying my best to correct it.

  21. Yes, he is talking about himself because he loves himself. When I say I am my world and of the world it means he loves himself and kind to himself.

  22. NO, he is just describing himself in a poetic way. The clues I have is that no one has a galaxy for a head. When he said my forehead is an open field when you say that you are basically saying you have a big forehead. He means that he is a part of the earth and is trying to focus on his life and take himself and do good in life.
    My metaphor about me:
My hair is brown dog fur and my eyes are big lolipops.

  23. Yes, I think the speaker likes how he looks. I admire the canyons of my ears means that he is the world to himself.

  24. After I read this poem I think the speaker likes hi self because in the text the speaker said I admire the canyons of my ears and the speaker also shows me that he likes himself is when he said I am of the world I am the world. I think the speaker meant that I am the ruler of the world and that people in the world look up to him as if he is a god.
My eyes are bright like the sun. My eyebrows black like the night. My head is shaped like a galaxy.

  25. After I read this poem I think the speaker likes himself because he talks about himself in a good way.

What I think I am of the world and I am the world is he is apart of this world and we are all a community.

My eyes are dark brown like a football.
My hair black like the night.
My head shaped like an egg.
