Kids can change the world!

PS261 believes in activism: the belief in or practice of trying to make social changes through active involvement.

Think about the needs you see in your community (at school, in your neighborhood, in NYC, etc.) Choose one of those needs you see and describe it in detail.

How can you help change things for the better? What are some things kids can do to help their community?

  1. I do not like it when people liter. People always leave their dog bags and sigarettes in front of my house. To stop that I can leave my garbage can open so people can through their garbage out in the garbage can instead of littering. I can also go outside and if their is garbage i will pick it up and through it out.

  2. In my neighborhood I see people drinking cans and then they throw the cans on the street and they be roud by doing that. I can help the community by picking up the trash and cans and putting them in the trashcans and thats how you can help the community. If people continue doing that bad things and putting trash on the floor I would tell them to stop and be respectful.

  3. What I can do help the community is to donate food for my community if they don't have enough food to eat. Foods that you can give are Mac and cheese in a box, soup in a can, and pasta, anything in a can or box. And something that won't go bad right away. Giving food will help by keeping people alive. I want to give food to people because some people might not have enough money to buy food.

  5. I want teens to stop loitering and drinking on the wooden trash cans and blocking the door in front of my house.

I could tell them to stop and just go home because the trash cans will break and I can't get inside.

    1. Great idea But that would probably get them angry and a kid our age would not stand a chance against a kid their age. Especially against multiple teenagers.

  6. In my neighborhood I don't like it when the teenagers fight outside my house it scares me because they will grab one another then bang one of the teenagers on my front door and it makes a loud Big Bang. One of the things that I can help my community to make that not happen is to tell any other teenagers that are there to not just stand there and laugh or record it and help the problem by telling them that someone lives here and it would be rude and disrespectful to do that to them. Or they could grab one of the teenagers that's fighting and then tell them thats wrong and lets just leave the area.

  7. We can help Nyc subways by telling throw your trash in the trash can insted of thrwing the trash in the train tracks and spitting in the tracks because it can make a fire.

We can help our school community by stopping bullying.

My step to stop putting trash in the tracks to tell them stop putting trash in the tracks and if they do not stop tell the employees and the cops.

My step to stop bullying is to stand up and tell them stop leave him or her alone. And to set an example of being polite and kind to one other.

  8. We could pick up the trash in the street and put it in the trash can. Then we could put gloves on and put the disgusting stuff in the right composting bins.

  9. Children can start a campaign to stop littering. An example is some mornings I will get out the door and find trash in my front yard. ALso, in the school garden I will find trash at recess. The way kids can start a No Littering campaign is they can put NO Littering signs on the doors and kids can send letters to there congressmen about the issue and how it should stop. Another thing kids can do is to pick up trash and when they see people litter they should tell them to pick it up and throw it in a garbage can. ALso, They can put there garbage cans on the street instead of trash bags when it's time to take out the trash.

  10. In a neighborhood near my afterschool teenagers hang out in front of the deli. They spit and curse at one another. Sometimes they smoke and fight with each other. Also when I’m going to my afterschool program I see teenagers sitting on other peoples cars. I think they should have a afterschool program for the teenagers. The afterschool program can show the teenagers how to keep the neighborhood clean. It would also help them to get along with each other.

  11. I believe that people should not harm animals, mainly pigeons. When I see pigeons flying, I find it vey fascinating and it is cool. I enjoy it a lot. There are some people who want to harm, capture or even kill them. Often on Mondays, I sometimes hear people talking about a plan to harm them. I could change things and make them better by telling people “ No,don’t harm pigeons! They are fascinating creatures.” I could make a home just for pigeons. I would like to make a petition saying “ Help the pigeons.”

  12. One of the needs I see in my community is for people to stop littering. Some things that kids can do to stop littering is to pick up any trash that they see on the streets and on the sidewalk. Also, they can tell other kids to put their trash in the garbage and to not litter. Kids could also create a "No Littering Club". Another need that I see in my community is more help for the homeless. Something that kids can do to help the homeless is to start a food drive. Another thing that they can do is giving money to the homeless people they see on the street.

  13. What you can do in your school community is to stop bullying kids. How you can do that is to be friends with the people how are getting bully and stick up for them. Tell the bully’s to stop bullying him or her and the kids who are getting bully buy them treats and make them feel a part of the community in school.

  14. I think those teenagers maybe we can tell them that ruins the environment all the animals like dogs can try to eat that stuff and they get really sick and it cost a lot of money to do surgery and that stuff Maybe we can put a sign to tell them that their trash is hurting the animals

  15. In my neighborhood I would like to help homeless people by giving them food and being kind to them. I would also like to help them find a place to live. In my school community I would like kids to stop teasing and bullying one another. I would also like to be kind to everyone.

  16. I see lots of times even in front of my building people hanging out and sometimes they shout and talk loud and sometimes they just hang around and it creeps me out. Maybe some people could put up signs that say don't hang around here and people who see people fighting can call 911 so police can take care of it so everyone will not be scared and less people will get hurt.

  17. I would help the neighborhood with not doing something dangerous like when my friend and her mom were going back to her house they saw a crime. I can tell my neighborhood to tell police if they see a crime and tell people to do the right thing.

  18. I see homeless people and trash piled up outside my home. How can I help? I can give money to the homeless and help them get a job. I can help to clean up the trash in my neighborhood.

  19. People need to stop doing graffiti because they are vandalizing property. People can stop buying spray paint and you could have a license to buy spray paint.

Stop smoking and leaving cigarettes on cars, school property and in the park because a dog can choke and die and it's bad for your health.

    Stop drinking alcohol

  20. For our school we can stop bullying and if you see a bully help the kid that's being bullied and don't be a bystander. Also, in the cafeteria we could stop littering and throw it in the trash can. If you see a homeless man, give them food, money and you could give them warmth. If there's a person contributing to global warming on your street tell them to pick up their trash and throw it in the trash can. My action for bullying is if I find a bully I will tell them to stop and go away then hang out with the person who got bullied. If I see a person littering I will tell them to pick it up.

  21. In my apartment people put their trash in front of the garbage disposal and people cuss at each other and smoke and throw trash out the window and let their dogs poop and pee in the elevator and a guy was cussing at a woman who was maybe 98 years old because it was hard for her to get in the elevator. How I'll change that is I'll say don't yell at her, she is an elder who can't do a lot of things because of her heath. I'll say stop throwing trash out of the window, you can use the trash disposal. I'll say stop smoking because it's bad for you.

  22. I believe that we should help recycle because when people don't recycle that plastic can end up in the ocean and that kills or traps animals. How we can help is by making signs to help people not get confused. Also you can ask an adult or kid to help recycle more.
