The Gold Cadillac by Mildred B. Taylor

Think about the author's message in The Gold Cadillac.
You can read the story again here:

How do the father's feelings about the gold Cadillac change from the beginning to the end of the story? Why do his feelings change?

Explain your thinking with details from the story.

How the father’s feelings changed from beginning to end was in the beginning Wilbert was happy because he got a very expensive car a gold Cadillac especially when your dark skin and this is the 1930’s when racism was happening was very rare. In the middle he started to feel bad that he bought this car and realized that he should follow his wife and start saving for a house. In the end he was happy because he sold the car and when you sell something you get back all your money. There were also bad memories be he got pulled out by two policemen and they were white officers and they saw a person that was dark skin driving a very fancy car and they thought he stole it. He was put in jail for three hours and then the judge took him out of jail.

  3. The author`s message is to show segregation because it`s based on a real story but some of it is made up. Also it`s teaching a colored person what was going on and a non-colored. person why are they doing and they didn`t understand why. Wilbert feelings in the beginning he was selfish because he didn`t ask Dee if he can buy the car. Also he wanted to show off the gold Cadillac in the south. Wilbert feelings changed in the end because he put his family in danger and trouble because he drove a fancy car to the south and he got arrested for a few hours and then the cops said he was speeding when he wasn`t then the cop car was behind him when it hit dark the cop car when away. Also he went and sell the Cadillac and got a Chevy.

  4. the message in the gold cadillac is to show racism and teach people to have empathy. the author also wanted to teach kids about social problem. the author also knew that most kids hadn't experienced racism and problems in the world.

  5. Wilberts feelings about the Cadillac in the beginning of the book was happy. I know this because when he bought the Cadillac, he wanted to drive in it around town to visit friends and family. At the end of the book, he was mad about it because when he tried to drive to the south to visit family, he got pulled over by 2 policemen and got his family in danger. I think he bought the Cadillac to show that black people can era money and get expensive.

  6. Wilbert feelings change over time about the cadillac and its changing because he was first happy because it was pretty and everyone liked it and he wanted to show the cadillac off. Then he felt proud to have the gold cadillac and ride it around in it to church and everywhere. Then his feelings really start changing because he wanted to drive to Mississippi and everyone told him it was like a loaded gun to the head. But he was still proud of it and still wanted to ride to Mississippi and show it off. Now Wilberts feelings change when he starts seeing the whites only signs and when he gets pulled over from the police. Now he feels that the cadillac is just sadness and racism, because the white police pulled him over and thought he had stole the car because it was expensive and he was black, but it was his car and they had to think of another reason to lock him up just because he was black.

The author's message is to trust people. At first the father is happy to have the Cadillac but he changes his mind because they had bad experiences in the car and related to owning the car. This is because of segregation.

  9. The author's message is do not be selfish. I say this because when Wilbert got the car he was selfish and did not tell his wife and they the Mercury for less then a year.

In the beginning of the book he felt proud. IN the end he felt he felt sad because the car caused racism.

  10. The author's message was to trust your family. At first the family was was happy about the Cadillac except Dee but at the end it was tearing the family apart and it was reminding Wilbert of the bad experiences the family had while driving to Mississippi. The reason was int the South there was segregation.

  11. The authors message in "The Gold Cadillac" is if you buy something expensive it can break a family apart. The father's feelings about the gold Cadillac changed from the beginning to the end because when he bought it he couldn't resist and he wanted to show it to his family from Detroit. In the middle of the story he wantred to take the Cadillac to the South but because of the racism he wasn't allowed to take a modern expensive car to Mississippi. At the end he felt like having the Cadillac would ruin his family so he sold it for a Ford and ordered a Mercury for his mother.
