Historical Fiction

Think about the historical fiction book you are reading.

How is daily life in your historical fiction book different compared to present day?
How does the physical setting affect the emotional setting?
How does the main problem in the story relate to the time period in your historical fiction book? Explain.

Use details from the story to support your thinking.

  1. Sing Down The Moon takes place in the 1860.Daily Life was different back then they lived in things called hogans and ate a lot of meat. The emotional setting effects the physical setting because when you are living in a place with limited amount of food people get really hungry. When people are hungry there emotions change. The main problem relates to the time period because they use slavery and slavery is a thing people did in the 1800s

  2. Daily life in my historical fiction book, All-of a-kind family, is different compared to present day. They lived on the upper east side on the eve of World War 1. It was the 1900's, (turn of the century). Life was different because they worked and earned only one penny a day. I know this because the five sisters, Ella, Henny, Sarah, Charlotte, and Gertie dusted for their mother every day and they only earned one penny every day. Another thing that's different is how their family take care of their children, how they look out for them and what they let them use. I know this because the father let his girls use the big sharp needle.

One moment where the physical setting affects the emotional setting is when the girls were at the library. I know this because Sarah was worried that she wouldn't be able to pay for the book that her friend lost. She was worried because they only get one penny per day. I also know this because the book that her friend lost was 1.89 cents and that costs a lot back then. Another setting where the physical setting affects the emotional setting is when Charlie found his ex wife and they fell in love again. I think this moment was a touching moment. I know this because when Charlie found her he couldn't even take another breath; his ex-wife was so breathtaking. I also know this because they were smooching!

I think the main problem in the story relates to the time period in my historical fiction book because the main problem is Charlie is not self confident because he thinks he could never get a wife again. It's the eve of world war 1. That kind of brings his sprit down.

  3. My historical fiction is different than 2017 because there were slaves back then and they hunted. Today we have stores. They didn't have cars. They had ships. The emotional setting is blue because Squanto is a slave. Hunting was hard for them. Ships take long for traveling. The main problem in the story is Squanto was a slave and his family disappeared. That happened when slavery was common. Slavery hurts your family . Strangers can hurt your family.

  4. In the book "Civil War" the time period is the 1960's. Daily life was different because it was a time of civil war and there were slaves, and there was racism going on a lot and now we don't slavery and other things. The emotinal setting is that in the civil war you are uncertainy and that means that you don't know what can happen. The main problem in my book is that two brothers are separated because of war.I know this because they choose different sides because one of the brothers believe in racism an the other brother doesn't.

  5. Daily life in my story is very VERY different. I know this because this native american tribe called the Navajos in sing down the moon (the book i'm reading) they lived in huts and they must have felt very uncomfortable especially the pregnant women. But when the Europeans came it's was a sigh of relief but then Europeans said "we need this land". but they didn't want to give up the land that they owned so then the native Americans were forced into slavery.

  6. The book i'm reading is The Secret Soldier. The years are 1776 to 1792. The scene is the revolutionary war. Women have much less rights than they have today. Also people die much younger than they do now because of not having a cure for illnesses and the revolutionary war. Back to women's rights: the average age for women to marry is eighteen; all the things that used to belong to them belong now to their husband and he can do anything he wants with them. Women also couldn't join a war unless they were a Molly Pitcher and these were rare. Also in the book, Americans was under rule by Great Britain. Taxes were very high and there were many of them. Most people could not read for their whole entire life because there was no such thing as school and books were very rare period. Kids started working around the house and learned to cook at about 7 years old. But luckily for the main character, Deborah, she could read at the age of 8. It was mostly women raising children because most of their husbands were at war.T

  7. In this book Dear Levi , in 1851 daily life is very hard. Daily life is hard because Austin, Levi's brother, has to try to get from Pennsylvania to Ohio. This is hard because they have to travel by wagon and that's the only transportation they have in 1851. Today we have cars, buses, trains and planes.

They have to cross deserts, hills and rivers which is not easy. That makes the characters feel dreary and worn out and scared.

The main problem in the story is daily life is extremely hard. This shows that daily survival in 1851 is something that a person today couldn't even imagine because they didn't even have shelter - they rolled under their wagon and slept on the desert floor.

  8. The book I'm reading is the Civil War. The time period is the 1860's. In this time there was slavery, the Civil war, and more war. The main problem is that the brothers are separated because they take different paths in the war.

  9. Daily life in my historical fiction book compared to present day is different because everywhere you turn there is gun shootings and people are getting killed. I know this because in the text it says Deborah joined the Army and she and the Army went to a cave that had food in it that had food stolen by the Toies. The Toies came and they started shooting guns and so the Army got on their horses and started running away. Deborah was shot in the neck and knee. Today there are a lot of different forces of the military and they fight in different countries over things like oil or idiotic things the President may say.

The physical setting affect the emotional setting when she was with her mother who was poor and sick Deborah was sad that she had to leave her mother then she got with her cousin and she was happy then she got ill and died so Deborah was sad again so she went with this old lady and she was very, very lonely so then she went with another family where she had to work for 10 years and she was sad once again.

  10. Back then they didn't have the same way of solving problems because back then everything was solved with physical fighting. Also they cared more about material things because life was harder. And when BM got her baby she was in a beautiful secret canyon so it gives away the beauty of freedom and of the moment. Today we don't have any slaves so this could not happen. Also Navajo land cannot be taken away because the Navajo now have there own country.

  11. In my book, All-of-a-Kind Family, things that were different were that you could buy a lot of small things with a penny or a couple of pennies. And they called apartments Tenements. And people tried to be very neat even if they weren't exactly wealthy.

When all the girls got to go to the market they were very happy, excited, and pleased. All the characters had a feeling when they went to the market.

I'm not finished with my book yet so I can't tell what the main problem is. But I finish it tonight. The time period is The Turn of the Century. (1900's)

  13. Back then people were slaves and in my Historical Fiction book the mother doesn't want Squanto to leave with the white men because at that time period people used other people as slaves. So probably the mom doesn't want the white to use Squanto as a slave. And when people have a problem with another person back then people didn't talk it out as we do now. And now people don't have to worry so much because today there isn't as much slaves.

The physical setting effects the emotional setting because in my book Squanto he decided that he should go with the white men, his mom didn't want him to go and she was very sad that he would never come back again.

The main problem i n the story relates to the time period in my historical fiction because i think that life was hard back then. I know this because back then you couldn't trust so many people because there was lots of slavery.

  14. I am reading a book called All-Of-A-Kind Family by Sydney Taylor. In this book, the three main characters are five sisters named: Gertie, Charlotte, Sarah, Henny, and Ella. Also a closely connected character is Charlie, who is sad because he is missing his wife.
In my historical fiction book, I noticed back then things cost in cents, not dollars. Things back then were rare and valuable. I know this because 2 of the girls got salmon, which was a RARE treat with some crackers that cost 2 cents. Now crackers are 5 bucks and salmon is common.
The physical setting affects the emotional setting because Charlie moved to New York because the people there were happy. Charlie said he moved here so he could escape the sadness of his lost wife.
I think the main problem, that Charlie isn't self-confident in himself, relates to the time period because Charlie couldn't just call his wife back then, so he just gave on trying to find her, and eventually lost self-confidence.

  15. The main problem relates to the time period in a big way because the main thing during that time period was slavery and the western ward expansion, and the book is about overcoming slavery and the white men called Long Knives in the book. The physical setting affects the emotional setting because in the book when they are in the camps that the Long Knives forced them in, it said the men had lost their souls which means they made idle threats and bragged about the past but did nothing. That shows there was little hope left. The daily life is very different from today’s because there are a lot of biological and economic differences. Such as it back then one wanted to get goods, one had to hunt, plant or milk, where as today, one would just go to a store to buy it.
