What did you name
and notice about the differences between Mannahatta 400 years ago and Manhattan
today? Are there any things that are the same?
·
What did you
wonder when you looked at the two maps?
·
Why do you think
the landscape of Manhattan changed so much? Where do you think the Lenape
settlements went?
·
What resources in
the environment can you see on the maps both 400 years ago and now?
Today in school I noticed that Broadway used to be a stream and now it is a very busy crowded street. Broadway is one of the most crooked streets in NYC because it was a stream. There are no more animals like farm animals in Manhattan, but there are plenty dogs on leashes! Manhattan and Manhatta both were very popular and lots of people wanted to live there. I wondered today when looking at the two maps where would the Lenape settlement would be today? I think that the Lenape’s settlement is now underground in lower Manhattan. Modern Manhattan was built right on top! Manhatta was covered with trees, grass, deer, and rabbits. I think that all the trees went to making houses and paper. Now the only place in Manhattan with all of those resources is Central Park.
ReplyDeleteOne of the differences is that there were 0 building when the people from England came or Christopher Columbus. It was just trees and land. Another difference is that there were no sidewalks, the most there was was a path, that's it. And maybe some long houses. And one of the same things is that they both have water surrounding stand it is more or less the same shape, although not exactly.
ReplyDeleteWhen I looked at it, I wondered if 400 years from now, people would say, oh wow, this is what New York City looked like? Also, with New York City we tore down the land and I feel so sad for the Lenape, because like in war the soldiers just burn or destroy villages, that is kind of what we did to the land by building so much and polluting. We ruined their home and their beauty.
The land changed when Europeans came and they started building and murdered the Lenape and they didn't care about the people already living here. They wanted to live here and build it how it was in Europe. The Lenape went to places where it was safe from the Europeans, where the Europeans wouldn't take the land from them.
Water and trees are both there at both times although we don't have as many trees as Manhatta. We both have air, but our air is polluted -- I could see that on some of the maps and pictures. Back then they had fish and animals in the woods like foxes, wolves, deer and bears and they are not just for eating, you can also use their fur for warmth.
I did't notice anything different but four hundred years ago their were a lot of trees and animals. But now their a lot of tall buildings and pulsation. I wondered when did people start building all of those tall buildings? I was also wondering did the native Americans have axes to cut down trees? I think that people from England came three hundred years ago and took over to get more land. I think that the Lenapes really far away to some where it should be safe. 400 years ago 2 of their reasorses was their wood boats and the trees. But 2 of our reasorses today are briges and cars.
ReplyDeleteI also wonder if the Lenape people had axes and if they did where did they get the metal?
DeleteI noticed that manhatan today has more technology then 400 years ago and buldings mahhata had more nature and trees they both have trees and lakes.
ReplyDeleteWhat I wondered when I looked at the maps is what it is going to look like another 400 years and how another school is going to see 800 years.
I think the landscape of manhattan changed alot because of us we came in because christopher columbis put diseases on the native americans lenape.
The resources I can see in both maps is now there is more polution .
Why do you think disease changed the landscape?
DeleteOne thing different about Mannahatta 400 years ago than Manhattan today is that Mannahatta was a beautiful land. The water today is polluted and there is less lush and tropical places. One thing that is the same is that we still eat what they ate, and in some places we grow crops like old times in Mannahatta.
ReplyDeleteI wondered what it looked like before Mannahatta and what it will look like in the future.
I think the reason it changed so much is that the European settlers wanted to make land more efficient, and to be living a life of luxury. I think the Lenape settlements went to small pieces of land and had to live a disgraceful life.
One resource I can see in both Mannahatta and Manhattan are that there is flat land and humans roaming that land, and another is plants.
Q:What did you notice about the differences between mannahatta 400 years ago and manhattan today? Are there any things that are the same?I think they both have the same thinking kind o because they used fire to keep warm and we use fire to keep warm!I think that 400 years ago in mannahatta they hunt and never uses electricity or gas to do certain stuff! They also didn't have electronics so that had to make maps not search it up!What i think now about manhattan is they have buildings, pollution, factory's that run on gas and electricity that is bad for our community! We also buy stuff rather then making it our self!
ReplyDeleteQ:What did you wonder when you saw the two maps?I thought oh my god this our world now and that was our world 400 years ago!I was amazed, shocked it was so pretty it was like heaven or a tropical island or another planet it was out of this world!I wondered how did that bathe, survive, keep warm or eat and, i also wondered what if they and asthma, cancer,or some kind of sickness that could kill you and how would you cure it?
Q:Why do you think the landscape changed so much?Where do you think the lenape settlements went?I think the landscape changed so much because when we went in their world we wanted this and that and electricity and working spaces to make money!I think the lenapes settled in upstate new york of somewhere nobody is going to take their home away from them again!
Q:What resources in the environment can you see on the maps both 400 years ago and now?I see trees and animals and food, heat from fire and i could see that their family are just like ours even though it was 400 years ago and i know that everybody has their own house and needs!
I noticed that whenever I saw rivers the ones today looked lighter and more polluted while the ones 400 years ago looked dark and clean. Same deal with the sky. The sky now looked polluted while the ones 400 years ago looked clean and healthy. I noticed that in both of them there were buildings. Just that the materials were different and the buildings got bigger and bigger over time.
ReplyDeleteI wondered if 400 years from now students would look at pictures of our Manhattan and compare it to theirs and decide that our Manhattan was cleaner and more healthy than theirs.
I think the shape of Manhattan changed because of all the docks and people building on more land.
I think the landscape changed because people were getting ambitious to build bigger structures and needed more room for housing because of a lot of immigrants coming in, So they cut down more trees which changed the landscape alot. I think the Lenape settlements went to other pieces of land but got kicked out so had to find shelter in areas that other tribes didn’t own.
There are trees, water, Food ( for the Lenapes animals for us restaurants.) News, shelter. Which you all need to survive. ( except news.)
What I noticed in Manhatta is it had little huts that the Native Americans lived in with ponds and Lake around. It also had lots of grass to grow their crops with many trees.today Manhattan has very tall buildings mass transit crowded busy streets
ReplyDeleteand not so many trees.2 looking at the maps I wondered how long did they take to make Manhatta what it is today, and how did Brooklyn looked 400 years later.3 I think the landscape of Manhattan changed a lot because when Christopher Columbus came he told many people about what he saw and him and others conquered the land and made it what is is today. I think the Lenape settlement relocated somewhere further north.some resources that I can see from 400 years ago to present is animals, farming, fire, water, wood, and stoves. These are the 4esource that were useful back then and still are useful now.
Some things i noticed that were different is that the old Times Square had a lot of trees and there wasn't hardly a single person in sight. One thing that was the same is that there was a river surrounding Manhatta and Manhattan. When I looked at the maps I wondered. like, what if 400 years in the future, people are looking at a map of right now and what would the difference be? Would they be like, oh my god, it used to be like that? I think the landscape changed so much because Christopher Columbus wanted to become famous so he took over that land and started building all of the things that started to be built, like cutting down trees. All just for fame. I think the Lenape went to this little reservation where they could sort of live how they used to except for the air was more polluted for them. The resources I can see that are the same are the rivers that surround Manhattan, it still has the fish in it and the plant life in there. The rivers can also be used to bring in boats from other places with supplies.
ReplyDeleteIn school today I saw that Manhattan has now cars and people. I knew that the population is now about 1,643,734 in 2016. Back then Manhattan was called Manhatta owned by the Lenape. The population was close to 897,436. When Christopher Coumbus came to America on 1492, he told the Europeans to come to America. When they arrived, they conquered the Lenapes' land and forced them to move to some other state. Then one day the British came and overcame the Europeans. Then the British renamed the state New York after the Duke of York and renamed it Manhattan. The differences are that there are pollution problems and that Manhatta had clean air. Also, the difference is that Times Square now has buildings, cars, buses, and people. The Times Square was once a marshland and a forest. I see deer and beavers and other animals that once lived there 400 years ago. Times Square was named after the New York Times newspaper that was first published on February 23, 1915.
ReplyDeleteI was born in Manhattan in 2007
DeleteOver 400 years ago Manahatta had trees and greenery but today it's all city and business and a couple of trees and parks. I noticed that in the Manahatta map the entire thing is green but the Manhattan map of today is gray with a big green spot in the middle for Central Park. I think the landscape changed so much because the Europeans came and the Europeans had much more technological advancements. I think the Lenape moved northwest. The Lenape also died from European diseases and warfare. You can see trees on both maps.
ReplyDeleteQ:The difference that saw today is in school is that manhattan 400 years ago they basically only have trees and grass. And manhattan now has a lot of building and light. The same thing that are the same are that there are trees, and there are on the same city and place.
ReplyDeleteQ:When I was looking at the pictures I wondering that how did they go places and meet there friend and eat food? And I was also wondering how did they eat food and make food?
Q:I think the landscape changed because the people who lived there they needed more room because they had a lot of trees and grass and pond so it might feel smaller but it is the same place.
Q:The resources in the environment that I see is that they did not have any supermarket, deli,or electricity.
Manhattan had more trees and nature also a lot of animals.
ReplyDeleteManhattan has a lot of electricity and lot of cars and taxis.
One of the things they had in common is that the shape if the island is simaller and ther both island.
I wonder if it would even have a difference because its the same island.
I think the landscape changed a lot because there was no electricity 400 years ago but there is a lot of electricity now.
I think the Lenape went some were far away because if they stay close to Manhattan the Native Americans would attack the lenape again.
Today in class I noticed that now there’s more side walks ,streets and life…but there was life back 400 years ago in Manhatta but barely any humans just animal life.400 years ago there were more trees and bushes.Oh and now there’s more cars and transportation back then you had to
ReplyDeletego places by foot.I like it how it is today because we have phones and iPads and transportation.
today when we looked at the manhaten no w it has a lot of bulidings and manhaten 400 yearsago manhaten was called manhata and it has alot of trees and i was verysuprised
ReplyDeleteQ:What did you name and notice about the differences between Manhattan four hundred years ago and today? Are there any things that are the same?
ReplyDeleteA: I noticed that it looked more humid and the colors of the skies and ocean were different. Back then they also had forts and huts instead of big buildings and houses. There were trees instead of big sky scrappers and they had very little resources- for example, we buy food instead of hunting, enjoy clean water straight from our taps instead of going to the river and digital communication.
Q: What did you wonder when looking at the two the maps?
A: i wondered what tools they used to hunt, how they would transport the hunted back to their homes, how did they managed to remain protected from the surrounding wildlife and how they prepared their food.
Q: Why do you think the landscape of Manhattan changed so much? Where do you think the Lenape settlements went?
A: i think the landscape shape shifted because bigger groups of people settled in and started building over the land as if it belonged to them. I think the Lenape tribe was forced to move elsewhere and decided to go to a more peaceful country like sites.
Q: What resources in the environment can you see on both maps four hundred years ago and now?
A: they both had fresh air to breathe, the have fresh water, the had wood from trees like we do now, we both use fires to warm up food or cook it.
There were more trees in Manhattan 400 years ago than now, but Manhattan now has huge buildings and less trees. There is still a lot of grass. When I looked at the two maps I thought the 400 year one looked warmer, more peaceful and quiet. The new map looks loud, there's more people and it looks colder. I think the landscape changed because more people came into Manhattan. I think the Lenape moved their settlements after their land was taken over. I think the resources in the environment I see in both of the maps are grass, some trees and water.
ReplyDelete400 years ago there were lots and lots of trees and wild animals like beavers and moose and more and the air was very clean. Now all those trees turned into factories and tall buildings and all that fresh air turned into polluted air. There are still animals like pigeons and humans and more.
ReplyDeleteWhen I looked at the two maps I thought about how 400 years from now kids will be sitting in a class saying oh my god Manhattan looked so weird 400 years ago.
I think Manhattan changed a lot because when the Europeans settled here they wanted to build a city were they could live and over time it just got built up and more polluted.
Now the Lenape live on reservations where they could live in peace but there is poverty and drugs and crime so it is not very peaceful.
400 years ago there were canoes and there are motor boats now also and there is fresh air to breath then and now.
Manhattan 400 years ago had ponds and lakes. There were no cars, no subway and no electricity. There were little cabins and the sky was more blue. There were no tall buildings and everything was made from wood. Manhattan today has skyscrapers and more tall buildings. We have cars, streets, sidewalks and subways. We have trains and buildings that are not just made from wood, they are made from metal and glass. We have shops where we can buy things.
ReplyDeleteManhattan 400 years ago and today both have trees and grass. Both of them have a place you can walk. They both have rivers and it is still an island.
I wonder what kind of animals lived here 400 years ago.
The landscape changed so much because more people came and they needed more buildings for people to live in. I think the Lenape settlements went to somewhere else in the USA like Pennsylvania or some place near NYC.
The resources I saw in both are trees, water, grass, hills, bushes and the two rivers. One that I can’t see is air.
I agree. I saw lots of ponds and lakes in the picture too.
DeleteDylan..
ReplyDeleteI notice 400 years ago in Manhatta the skies was clear and clean not polluted and dark. Back then their was no transportation, people had to walk to where they had to go. Manhatta only had grass, bushes, paths and trees. Electricity and wifi never existed, unlike today people knew nothing about trains, buses, cars or nothing. A lot as changed since then, we have buses, train, buildings, stores and sidewalks. It's like they upgraded Manhatta to Manhattan.
I wonder why they change the name from Manhatta to Manhattan?
As I was looking at the map today of 400 years ago of Manhattan one of the biggest differences I saw was 400 years ago there were lots of tress and land but today there are lots of building and sky scrapers. Some of the things I wonder about was how they found and made food. I also wonder why did Columbus take down the trees and made buildings. The landscape changed because the shape of the city was kind of different 400 years ago. The resources of the environment that we have then and now are the water that surrounds the city. I think the settlers changed because the Lenape was moved out because of Columbus and the lenapes probably move where there was a lot trees, water and animals so they could continue there happy life the way they always knew it.
ReplyDeleteWhen the Lenape lived, there was much more trees cause their houses were smaller so they could fit the trees. In Manhattan now, it's like a scavenger hunt to find trees almost. We're trying to be better about it but we're still putting fences around trees including Prospect Park and Central Park.
ReplyDeleteWhen I saw the pictures, I saw a moose, which makes me think there used to be moose in Manhattan, also known as Manhatta, which makes me feel annoyed that we killed all the trees which killed the moose. And I also saw a beaver on his dam also makes me sad because there's no beaver dams in Manhattan anymore.
They both have about the same amount of land. But the Lenapes live in tents. We live in tall apartment buildings or small wooden houses. Wooden.
Less people lived in Manhatta, and there was no electricity, nothing to cause pollution. Back then the weather was nice because there was no pollution now the weather is wild because there is pollution.
Now we have food markets to get our food. We don't have as much farms as the Lenape did. When I looked on the maps there was farms. Farms. There wasn't grocery stores there was farms. When I saw our map, I couldn't see a single farm in sight. Just grocery stores and other buildings.
There was also also a lot more lakes so they had fish. They had to hunt to get food instead of just stopping by the grocery store and buying it.
I notice that before we did not have much buildings or towers in Mannahatta. We did not have shopping centers or much people out.Today we have buildings and alot of stores and people are driving and going to work.Yes there are things the same. There are ponds, land, grass and a large body of water.I wonder what life would have been like if we had more buildings and people. I think the landscape changed so much because of technology and more people and jobs.I think the lenape settelments went to another country I just don't know where. The resources I see are trees, land and rivers, and grass.
ReplyDeleteI noticed that Mannahatta had more trees and grass then Manhattan. Now Manhattan has more people and buildings then Mannahatta.
ReplyDeleteWhen I looked at the maps I wonder how many people did it take to build the Empire state building and all the other skyscrapers.
I think Mannahatta changed because people didn’t just want a little land. They wanted a big land with buildings like the Empire state building and the skyscrapers. I think the Lenapes were hiding from the European’s because they killed most of the Lenapes.
The water around them is a resource also the boats because they could fish for food. The many trees were a resource because the give oxygen. Now we have subways, buses, cars and, supermarkets. We basically have access to anything we need. The air we breathe now isn’t what it used to be since there is so many factories and buildings polluting the air with less trees.
What I noticed is that four hundred years ago,Mannahatta was smaller than what Manhattan is today. It has grew over the four hundred years. What I also noticed is that there is more nature in mannahatta than Manhattan today. There was plenty of vegetation and natural resources which means there were more natural habitats as well. Also in Manhattan the sky was foggy,in Mannahatta the sky was clear which means there was way less pollution. Today there is a lot more pollution because we use cars, buses and subways.
ReplyDeleteManhattan and Mannhatta was and still is an island to this very day.
When I saw the picture of Mannahatta and Manhattan today, I was shocked because there used to be so much land for the Natives of Mannahatta to live on. We took the land from the natives and animals that lived there and we built buildings, Cities and Towns out of it and we did not care an iota about what we have done.
I think the Lenape tribe was moved onto one of many reservations where they did not have the same resources that they were used to.
I can see animals roaming free like birds squirrels, Skunks and different insects today in Manhattan just like there were in Mannahatta 400 years ago.
