In the book Becoming Naomi Leon one of the patterns is that Owen is always positive when something bad happens. For example when Owen got bullied he said that the kid that was bullying him was just teasing.On the other hand Naomi was just traumatized. Another example is when Skyla visited the family Owen said"Maybe she brought us presents!"But Naomi had all sorts of feelings. Another example is when Skyla went out he thought that she would bring pizza and ice cream. Those are some examples of the pattern.

DeleteThe authors message in becoming Naomi Leon is that you should stand up for yourself. I know this because there are 3 fifth graders that are bullying her. They make fun of her last name, Outlaw . They say "Oh is this a stick up or shouldn't you be in the desert to not get taken to jail ?" But Owen keeps calm and says they're just joking. He is always optimistic almost about everything. An example is that when Skyla did not come to the conference and Naomi and Owen were standing there till dark Owen said she will come. She is just a bit late. But Owen was wrong. She knew that she was late but didn't care. She was on a date with Clive and did not even think about their feelings. This is why I think the authors message is to stand up for yourself.

DeleteI think that Skyla does not care about her children and is caught up in her own life. I think this because,1, she did not come to Naomi and Owen's conferences even though she promised. It was supposed to be there special time together. She dressed the same as Naomi, and even died her hair the same color as Naomi's in preparation. Her excuse for not coming was that she was out with Clive.She came back smiling like nothing ever happened. She also invited Clive to Naomi's house without Grams permission.2, Skyla does not spend much time with Naomi and Owen: she's always out with Clive.
ReplyDeleteI think one of the big ideas are that Naomi is upset because Skyla didn't show up to parent teacher confrences and was mad at gram for not telling her that thier dad wanted them and that Skyla her mom was taking different kinds of medicien, went thew half way houses and was acholic and gram said nothing.

ReplyDeleteSkyla's inconsiderate. 1) In the beginning when she hadn't seen them in seven years (which is a long time for kids) she says "Owen, Naomi give me a hug" and she expects them to know her even though Owen was one and Naomi was around three or four when she left them with Gram. 2) She acted as if it was no big deal when she missed the parent/teacher conference when they were waiting till dark and she said she would be there. 3) She invited Clive to dinner without asking when it isn't her house, and they didn't even know him. That's why I think one of the big ideas is how you need to think about others as Skyla did not do.
I think one of the big ideas are how skyla is an alcaholic and she is not a good parent. She somehow brought her boyfriend. She probably does this since she is drunk and not careful for the kids. She has a problem with handling the kids.

I know this because after he got bullied he said that he fell down on purpose and that they were just teasing him. I know this because in the text she starts out shy and suddenly her dad came and made her a soap carving and took her to church. Then her father mysteriously disappeared, was stranded on a boat an entire weekend, then he got help, and then the mother took the kids before he got back to the church. When he got there he couldn't find Naomi. He was looking for her. Naomi missed her dad and goes to live with her grandmother in a trailer. The mother left and had a new boyfriend named Clive but visits.

Owen has a physical challenge and none of the kids want to be his friend. but he's the smartest kid in the class. and really nice and cheerful. also Skyla did not show for there teacher conferences and she told Owen and Naomi that she would be there and then she came back and gram said" where were you you did not show up for there conferences!" and Skyla said "i was just out on a weekend vacation with clive thats all :)" like it was nothing. and that shows no kindness. thats how i know the message is that to be kind and don't leave people out.
ReplyDeleteI think a big idea is that Skyla should not be the person who takes care of Naomi and Owen. One reason I know this is because Skyla is an alcoholic and what if Skyla goes driving with Owen and Naomi and they get in a car accident because Skyla is drunk driving. Another reason I know this is because Skyla isn’t being very nice to Owen and a mother should be nice to her kids. That’s how I know Skyla shouldn’t be Owen and Naomi’s mom.

DeleteI think Skyla's character motivation to do and make all these decision that are not good ones are coming from Skyla's boyfriend, Clive. I know this because Clive motivated Skyla to change her first name and last name to Skyla Jones even though her original name was Terri Lin. I know know that Clive motivated Skyla to let him be a tattoo artist even though at first she didn't want him to be a tattoo artist but he convinced her that he would make a lot of money. Also, Clive motivated Skyla to go on a vacation and to a fancy resort called Spring Palm instead of going to the parent-teacher conferences for both of her kids. This is all my text evidence for why Clive motivates Skyla.

When Skyla came in when everyone else was relaxing and they (don't include Skyla) were done with dinner,Gram asked her "WHY DIDN'T YOU COME TO NAOMI AND OWENS CONFERENCES?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?"
Skyla just said" what ? it was just a two conferences.Whats the big deal?" If someone talked to me like that I'd be hurt.
And when skyla said that, afterwards she did not say sorry. Another big idea of mine is... I think Naomi was lonely when Bianca wasn't there. The text evidence of that is, Naomi said when she was going to the school with her new 'do' she said "I wonder if anybody will notice that my hair is french braided and that I have lip gloss" and when she met Bianca she said "my new look had brought me luck, I had my mother to thank." I think that, that sort of means that Naomi has wanted a friend all along, not just Owen. Another big idea is... Gram really loves the children and does not want to let them go. And she gives them all the wisdom she knows in a puzzling way. My text evidence for that is... When she finally told them about Santiago she admitted "I guess that was sort of being selfish of my part". Also the other text evidence is... She always gives sayings like "I don't like to dig up old bones" and "lets not go trudging at the bottom of the river".
One of my big ideas are. Naomi has mixed feeling about all this new information and dose not know to be happy or sad. I know this because in the text Naomi said "I don't know to be happy or sad"-

I think a big idea is that Skyla is very inconsiderate. I think that because she just invited Clive over for thanksgiving without even asking Naomi, Gram and Owen what they thought about it. Also, Skyla just misses the conferences with no explanation.

ReplyDeleteNaomi uses Owen’s optimism and the fact that he likes her to boost her confidence.
Owen is always optimistic. Naomi isn’t liking that but at times needs him to be like this for her own good. He pretends to be happy about everything and tries to cheer people up all the time. Naomi motivates Owen to act this way because Naomi is usually silent. She is a very good worrier so Owen wants her to look at the bright side of things. For example, when Owen is shaking and sputtering on the ground when the bullies pull the comfort- tape off his chest. Also, when he has his tape back on, he smiles at Naomi and says: “It’s okay. I was just pretending. ” Both of them knew it wasn’t true at all.
Skyla uses materialistic objects to buy love.
Here are some pieces of text evidence that Skyla WAS trying to buy Naomi’s love. (Something that naturally is uncondional) At first Naomi wasn’t a fan of Skyla coming in after 7 YEARS. Now, after all this clothes buying, she gets attached to Skyla, like little tiny burrs on a wool sweater. Clive, Skyla’s boyfriend motivates her to do this because ever since she came and started a new life with Clive, Skyla only listened to him. Clive makes all these decisions like: “You don’t look like a Terrie Lynn, you look beautiful like the sky!” Hen She went along and changed her name from Terrie Lynn to Skyla. Clive gives her money to go shopping for Naomi- “And wasn’t that sweet!”
Last but not least, I think that Gram is being very secretive. I also think that Skyla is motivating Gram to be secretive. Here is my text evidence: Skyla is on meds and is drinking a lot of alcohol, so Gram doesn’t want Naomi and Owen to know about this and freak out, like they did in the last chapter. Also, Skyla threatened Santiago that if he ever made contact with the kids, she would bring him to court. Gram didn’t want to tell the kids so they wouldn’t worry.
One of my big ideads is that skyla only cares about her and clive my first reson is that skyla didn't show to naomi and owen's conference and skyla promise she come to there conference but she didn't insead she went on a little vacation
ReplyDeleteI think one of the big ideas are, Skyla is inviting Clive to grams house. Gram, Naomi and Owen don't even know Clive. Skyla didn't come to the parent teacher conference and she didn't even take it seriously. Naomi and Owen took the parent teacher conference very seriously!!!

For example, Skyla left Naomi and Owen in a horrible storm just to go on a shopping trip downtown. Another reason I say this is because she left Naomi and Owen in the dark at the steps of the school. Also, Sklya is unfair because in the text, she bought everything for Naomi and Owen didn't get anything. Also, another reason is that once Skyla got home one day, the night before the conference, Skyla came home with a bottle of raven hair dye because she wanted to look just like Naomi, but she had nothing for Owen. So that's how I know that Skyla is a very selfish and unfair mother to Naomi and Owen.

How I now this is,skyla never came to owen and Naomi’s conferences and the waited for her till dawn and naomi gets really mad becouse skyla did not come.then gram takes owen and and Naomi to spray and play to try to cheer them up, and skyla shows up and she acts like nothing happened then gram screams at skyla she says why didin’t you come to their conferences! Another piece of evidence is,when Skyla was supposed to be at Owen and Naomi’s conferences but instead she was with clive on a date. She spends more time with clive than Owen and Naomi. Also a mom is supposed to be loving and caring and Skyla is not.
