i think the main problem is.... naomi is torn into many peices and confused or if skyla is going to get married or if skyla likes her or if she is ever going to have any friends. i know this because.... clive and skyla really like each other and there always with each other and i think there buying all these preasents for everyone so that they will like skyla and clive and to wait till the right time to tell everyone there getting married then everyone will say yes. also... skyla in the begining seemed to like naomi and she was buying all these clothing for naomi and dying her hair the same color as her but then she was being mean to naomi and threating her to say thank you to clive for all the preasents and when skyla smelled like sour milk aka. beer and such.. and when she was doing the braid on naomi she yelled at her and tugged her hair. last... blanca came up and started talking to naomi and she is not sure if she still wants to be friends with blanca because i think blanca thinks that skyla is not a good mother and that naomi is a bit weird because naomi does not have any friends and skyla did not show up for confrences and that is a bit weird and mean for a mother to do.

DeleteIn the book Becoming Naomi Leon one of the ways Gram has been changing is at first Gram was a little worried that Skyla will take the kids back after seven years. I know this because Gram kept a secret that Santiago really did want the kids back but Skyla said if he tried to contact Gram he would go to court, but he also sends money every year to them. Where we left off Gram was okay with Skyla staying at their home. I know this because when Skyla said she had a present Gram said it was okay for the kids to look at it but Skyla threatened the family if they didn't fix up their attitued they wouldn't get their present, so Gram fixed up her attitued.
ReplyDeleteI agree and disagree with you. I agree that gram was getting used to Skyla being there but remember, gram did not want the kids to go look at the present. Gram was, i think, really mad at Skyla.
DeleteIn the book Becoming Naomi Leon, Gram changed a lot. She went from being a very positive optimistic person to a negative and worried person. Gram was worried about Skyla's alcoholism so Gram isn't sure if Skyla can take care of the kids. Also, Gram is worried about Naomi because she's worried that Naomi might become a selective mute again. Gram was also worried about Owen because Owen is a funny and positive person that always look on the bright side. However, Skyla might make Owen change to a negative person. Skyla has already changed him a little. These are reasons that Gram has become very worried and has changed.

pessimistic means someone who always complains about things and look at the dark side of very good things. Gram is not like that... but she is worried about that kids being with Skyla.

DeleteI don't think Gram is exactly pessimistic, but I do agree that she has changed and I think she is a lot more worried and what she said at the beginning about positive thinking, she is not following her own advice.
DeleteI disagree with Unknown about Skyla and Clive planning to get married. This is because I believe that Clive isn't really into Skyla. I know this because it looks like the only reason Clive is giving money to them is because Clive is making Skyla's decisions for her. This is because Skyla is an alcoholic. I think they're using each other. Skyla is using Clive to make her decisions for her. Clive is using Skyla to just have a family because he said "My daughter from my second marriage is close to Naomi's age". That shows that maybe he wants a second marriage or another child.

DeleteI think that Skyla thinks that she will get money from Clive if she stays with him. Clive and Skyla are boyfriend and girlfriend and he knows that she does not have a job so he gives her money and also to buy Naomi presints. I know this because she agrees with him about everything he says and she even let him change her name! And I think Terri Lyn is a beautiful name but I think she just did not want to make him upset so she went with the flow. She also gave Naomi a lot of presents and she said it was all from Clive because he was the one who gave her all the money to get the presents and plus the bike for Owen and a bike is pretty expensive. But I think Skyla was not happy with that because she does not like Owen because of his disabilities. This is why I think Skyla thinks she will get money if she stays with Clive.

DeleteI think a character belief system in Becoming Naomi Leon is that Skyla believes she can get away with everything. One reason I know this is when Gram got mad at Skyla about the parent teacher conference situation she said, “ I don’t believe it Gram! You're raining over all of my joy just because I skipped two conferences!” Another reason I think Skyla believes she can get away with everything is that she came back to Owen and Naomi after seven years and she just gave Owen a fake hug! Then she bought Naomi seventeen million things and didn't get Owen a single thing. When he asked her about it, she just shooed him off.

I think gram is getting tired of skyla since she is not careful for the children. She does this because she isn't a considerate person and she has a rude attitude since Clyde is controlling her. Skyla has been doing this because her bad choice.

My character changing comment is on Owen. I think Owen is loosing his confidence. My text evidence for this is that, on page 31, it quotes," she probably went out to pick up pizza and ice cream." Owen said that so that means he WAS determend to look on the optimistic side. But then, on page 72, it quotes, " our mother came back for a visit. said Owen, but the usual luster was gone from his voice and his face." This shows that he is loosing his confidence. another big idea I have is that Skyla is rood and inconsiderate. I do not have the book, so I can not look up the page, but Skyla called "baby beluga" a dump, plus she went out with Clive on thanks giving instead of staying with her family. This leads to my next idea that Clive is taking over Skyla's life because she is always with him.

I think that because 1.Skyla says in the beginning of the book she will get Owen something but she doesn't get him anything until the middle of the book. 2. While Skyla is braiding Naomi's hair she pulls her hair and yells at her.

In the book Becoming Naomi Leon I think Clive was mean and inconsiderate at Thanksgiving. I know this because when Bernard's dog was barking Clive said "get that out of my face. Skyla you know I do not like dogs!" Yeah... rude, right? And so the dog had to go to the other house where no one was, which showed how mean he was to the dog. It was also mean to Naomi and Owen, who wanted the dog there because the dog was like family to them.
ReplyDeleteAlso when Clive saw Naomi's soap carving he did not care one bit. I could tell this by his emotions that showed me he did not care. This was inconsiderate to Naomi because she put a lot of effort into the soap carving of the bird and that did hurt her feelings.
Last not only did Clive invite himself to the house, but he brought flowers and he left the price tag on the flowers to show how expensive it is. That is really rude because you are showing how much money you put into it, which is not proper manners.

I agree with the price tag because usually when I buy something for someone else I take the tag off because when you leave the tag on something it is very inconsiderate.

Deletei think one of the patterns in becoming naomi leon is... that skyla is good bad good bad i know this because when skyla came home from her trip with clive and after she missed the kids conferences she was all like "HI EVERYBODY COME OUTSIDE FOR A SURPRISE!" and then she threatened naomi and gram and owen to stop or she would return the gift (bike) also when she did naomis hair the first time she did it nice and easy and naomi liked how it felt. but then the next time skyla did her hair on parent teacher conferences she tugged on naomis hair and yelled "SIT STILL NAOMI I WANT YOU TO LOOK PRETTY TODAY" in a mean way. my last reason is skyla was acting like a nice mom in the beginning and then she was mean at the end because all of the above and when she rudely invited clive over for thanksgiving dinner without asking gram.

I know this because in the text Terri Lyn/ Skyla came through Naomi's door saying that she changed her name to Skyla and she got the name from her boyfriend Clive. Also, Clive said that his daughter from his second marriage was named Elizibeth but he changed it to Sapphire without even asking Elizibeth/ Sapphire's mom.

I think the theme in Becoming Naomi Leon is about family and keeping her family together. This doesn't mean her mother but the family she has known-- her great grandmother and her brother.

DeleteI thought of a few character belief systems in Becoming Naomi León by Pam Muñoz Ryan.
ReplyDeleteI think Owen believes that you need happiness and hope to get through the tough things in life. My text evidence for this is that every time Naomi is feeling down, Owen shows up and looks on the bright side of things to cheer her up. Just like when Skyla was gone- he said: “Maybe she went out just to get ice cream and pizza for all of us!” And when he was shaking and sputtering on the floor when his comfort- tape was off his chest. When he got it back, he looked up at Naomi and smiled really big.
“I was just pretending!” Said Owen.
Another belief system is Skyla’s belief.
Skyla Jones believes that she can use people for her own benefit.
At thanksgiving, Skyla agreed with every thing that Clive says… so she can keep him and his money. Before, when Skyla and Clive were at their first date, he said that she didn’t look like a Terrie- Lyn, she looked beautiful, like the sky. Now she agreed and changed her name to Skyla.
One of the Belief systems is Gram’s belief.
Gram believes that Skyla has her rights to take the kids.
Gram wants them to stay with her… especially after all these 7 years of not being with them and 4 years of treating them badly. A piece of evidence is that at Fabiola’s house, Gram says: “Skyla has her rights. All I did was add the last name Outlaw to all of their papers so nothing sounded suspicious. I didn’t sign any papers in order to have them as my legal children.”

I think the main problem in the story right now is that Skyka drinking and she was in half way houses. Skyla invited Clive to grams house and Naomi,Owen and gram don't even know Clive. Simon had a good Big Idea he said '' Skyla needs some body to guide her and that was on page.90. I think that Naomi is going to be the next main problem!

DeleteWhat I learned today was that just because Clive bought Owen and Naomi stuff like a bike, gloss, hair dye, clothes and a perfume that doesn’t mean he is all that kind. He is rich because he would buy Skyla a suit case instead of using a plastic bag. Also when Bernardo brought Lulu he demanded to put the dog away and said “Skyla you know how I feel about dogs.” He has issues with dogs and at Thanksgiving table he didn’t like the soap carving.

ReplyDeleteIn the book Becoming Naomi León one of the big ideas is Clive is inconsiderate. I know this because when he came on Thanksgiving he gave Gram a present with a tag saying $3.89. It is inconsiderate to do that because 1) if it is only a low price that shows they were not spending time looking at the gift and caring if the person they gave it to knows it's cheap. 2) He just picked up Naomi's carving and grunted and put it down beside his napkin when she spent a long time making it and not saying something like "Wow! Really nice carving." 3) Clive accepted coming to Thanksgiving when Skyla invited him and even thought he was invited by everyone even he though he wasn't.

I think santiago will come back how i know this is,since santiago keeps sending money to gram santiago might as well come back. where naomi gets all her soap carving skills and her last name, leon is from her dads side of family how I now this is, her dad was a champion of radish carving skyla does not epreciate Naomi's soap carving skills.
ReplyDeleteI think in the book "Becoming Naomi Leon" what the author is trying to say is that some people are very inconsiderate of other, like Clive. When Clive came over for Thanksgiving there was a dog there, and Clive made the dog had to go back to its home, and he didn't have the right to do that because it wasn't his trailer, and everyone else wanted the dog to stay there.
ReplyDeleteAnother reason that shows that Clive was inconsiderate was when they were at the dinner table and he took the bird that Naomi carved out of soap and he started a discussion on how Skyla doesn't like soap carving because of Santiago. So that's why I think Clive is inconsiderate.
