Revising Our Thinking: Becoming Naomi León

As we read, we revise our thinking based on new text evidence.

Think about one big idea you had about Becoming Naomi León. Explain how you have revised your thinking based on new text evidence. Use details from the text to support your thinking.

For example...

At first I thought _______________
Now I think ___________________
I think this because in the text it says ________

  1. at first i thought naomi was negative and gloomy now i think naomi is positive and not negative or gloomy. i think this because in the text it says naomi wrote hundred times we will find him we will find him. another reason i think this is, naomi was pointing out all the good stuff when they were driving in mexico. that is why i think that naomi turned positive.

  2. In the beginning I thought Owen was positive but now he is negative. I know this because at first when Skyla came he was really exited he also thought she was going to bring presents and when Skyla left he thought she was getting ice cream and pizza. That was when he was positive, but now he is negative because when Naomi was noticing all the cool things on the drive he reminded her about the cockroaches and the dead dog and the lady selling tortillas on the gas station. Those are some of the examples why Owen changed.

  3. At first I thought Clive was nice because he wanted to take Owen to Las Vegas. But now I know he is EVIL!!!
I know this because he UESED Naomi's bird soap carving for his hands to get the turkey greace off his hands.

      I agree with you.
I also thought that(since I thought Clive was a nice guy)that Skyla was actually lying to Clive (because we just found out that Skyla was bad)that"Gram want's you over for a thanks giving dinner."and"Owen wants you to buy him a bicycle ,And Naomi want's a bunch of hair clips and new cloths."

  4. In the beginning I thought that Clive was a nice guy because he was giving Naomi a lot of presents plus giving Owen a bike and bikes are pretty expensive so this is why I thought Clive was a nice guy. Know I think that is exactly what he wanted because he wanted the to get the state money. He thought if he sugar coated them with presents they would go with him. This is I changed my thinking about Clive.

    1. In the beginning I thought Clive was giving them presents because he wanted to be nice to them and start to actually know them . But now I know that he is the purest darkness!!! i think this because he used Naomi's and Owen's heart and make them live with him to get the state money!

  6. I think gram is worried. I know this because in the book Naomi leon Naomi says "I could see dark puddles of withered skin in grams eyes. On another page Naomi said once again " Gram's patience was wearing .

    1. I agree with you Nigel because Gram is also worried about Skyla. I know this because she was a positive person until Skyla came along. Now, you can tell she's worried because she's worried about Skyla taking Naomi away from her.

  7. At first I thought Owen was a positive thinking person because he was always thinking on the bright side of things. For example, at the beginning of the book whenever Gram or Naomi were feeling down, Owen would always find a way to stay positive and cheer them up. Now, I think Owen is actually a pessimist because in the text when they went to Mexico he kept talking about all the bad things he saw through the window. This is my revised thinking for Owen.

  8. In the book Becoming Naomi Leon my thinking about Naomi has changed because her behavior in the book today was optimistic. One reason I I think this is because when she was trying to find her dad, who was missing, she wrote a hundred times "we will find him" and that shows that she is optimistic because if she was pessimistic she would be thinking we will never find him.

Another reason that my thinking about Naomi has changed and I think she is optimistic is she was pointing out all the great things about Mexico while Owen, who is usually the optimistic one, was pointing out bad stuff about Mexico. In the beginning of the book she wasn't optimistic or pessimistic because she just didn't say anything, but now I think she is optimistic because she of these two examples. For those reasons that is why I think Naomi is optimistic. Thanks for reading

  9. At first I thought Owen was optimistic. I thought this because when kids made fun of him, he just laughed. Now I think Owen is becoming negative. I know this because Owen started pointing out all the negative things Naomi and Owen saw on the way to Mexico, like the dead dog on the side of the highway, and the cockroaches in the pink motel. That is why I think Owen was optimistic and now he is negative.

  10. At first I thought Owen knew everything and was very smart, but now I think he's not very smart. I know this because in the text I noticed in the book when Naomi was narrating she said Owen was the smartest in his class and he was correct with every single page of work and all his grades are A's. Then he was talking about things in Mexico with Naomi like cockroaches and puppies out the window. There were cockroaches in a pink motel.

  11. at first i thought skyla was fun and maybe possibly a good mother just had some problems and gave them to gram for a good cause. for example when naomis parent teacher conferences came around skyla did naomis hair in a pretty braid and skyla complimented on her hair. and also she gave naomi all these presents like the shirts and pants and lipstick and all. but now i KNOW (not think) that skyla is not a good mother. i know this because when skyla was doing naomis hair one morning she tugged on naomis hair and yelled at her and also smelled like sour milk whichhhh brings us to reason number two! skyla is an alcoholic when she was doing naomis hair she smelled like sour milk and when she was at owens doctors appointment she was drinking in the bathroom. and that alsooooo brings us to my last reason (they all connect) when they got home from the doctors appointment skyla....... slapped naomi across the check!!!! :o :o so that is why i thought skyla was a good mother and then i realized she is not!

    1. I agree with you Molly because when Skyla walked through Baby Beluga's door I thought oh Skyla seems like a nice mother and that Skyla passed on Naomi and Owen because she just couldn't handle being a mom by herself but when Skyla slapped Naomi across the cheek I thought oh my gosh Skyla is not a good mother.

  12. Today while we were discussing stuff about Becoming Naomi Leon we were talking about Naomi and Owen changing personalities and at first I did not agree that they were changing personalities but after Bea said that now Owen is being negative like saying don't forget about the dead dog and squirrels and before Naomi was letting her ice cream melt and being all pesstimistic but know she is being all positive.

      I disagree with you, Nadia.
I think that Owen was just saying random things that he saw.And my T.E. is,Owen said "The dead dog and the squirrels, the rainbow -don't forget the cockroaches"
Squirrels crowding around a tree is not pessimistic thinking- its just "Squirrels crowding around a tree".And rainbows are not bad either, who cares about cockroaches? well I don't.

  13. In my readers journal what I said was that Naomi was turning into Owen but I am revising my thinking. Because I think that Owen that when Owen said'' What about the roaches and the rain bows''. And Naomi said in her book a lot of bad stuff that can happen in mexico so that is why I revised my thinking!!!

  14. In the book: Becoming Naomi León, I revised my thinking about Naomi, Owen and Santiago.
At first I thought that Naomi was always pessimistic and will always worry about Gram, Owen and having a crazy alcoholic as a mother. When Naomi was silent and used her notebook as a communication device, she expressed her fear and worries about her never having a normal and more ordinary life.
Based on later text evidence, I found out that Naomi is beginning to expand in her confidence and is trying to be as optimistic as possible. I know this because in the text, Naomi writes ONE HUNDRED times:
I will Find Him, I will Find Him, I will Find Him…
Also, I know that she gained confidence when she stood up to Skyla with Owen.
I noticed that something was different about Owen after the conferences. Instead of being the happy and exited-about-everything Owen, Even HE was sad.
I recognized it when we came across the text evidence where Owen is naming some very negative things that they saw on the way to Oaxaca.
For a few seconds he thought about bad things, like the dead dog and cockroaches, then about good things like rainbows and tortillas. He is flicking through emotions. He is changing.
I thought that Santiago was a smaller part of the story. Recently, I realized that Santiago is a very big part of this story because now, the mission is to find him. Also, He is scared of Skyla. My text evidence is when Skyla threatened Santiago, he didn’t have the courage to look for Naomi just because of what Skyla said.
This is my revised thinking in Becoming Naomi León.

  15. At first, I was thinking that Naomi would never change in a positive way. But now I know that she can change in a positive way. I know that she changed because when they were going to Mexico Naomi wrote in her note book, "We will find him. We will find him." Also when Naomi was on her way to Mexico, Naomi said, "I will be positive the whole time I am in Mexico."

Before I thought,"Maybe Skyla will be nice again,or 'as smooth as cream pie'." And my text evidence is"She was back to her "normal" self again and WAS being nice."
but now I think "Not a lot of people can switch their personality often, especially in-ONE DAY!..."And my text evidence for that is"Skyla slapped Naomi on the cheek because Naomi was standing up for herself,And threatened her own daughter by saying'You are coming with me-if you like it...or not' "That does not sound "as smooth as cream pie".

I agree with you, Orli that Skyla is not as smooth as cream pie and I think the reason why she's not is because she is drinking and it has changed her brain. Santiago wouldn't have married a woman like Skyla is now because it says that he was very nice and kind and normally, nice and kind people don't marry like Skyla.

  17. I think Naomi is trying not to worry but she can’t. I think that she is changing because Naomi wrote in her book, we will “find him“100 times and then she became more optimistic. I think Naomi is trying not to worry but she can’t help it. She is changing her personality from negative to positive and Owen is changing from positive to negative. Ever since they went to Mexico, Owen’s been more pessimistic. Now I think that Clive is using Skyla because he gave the idea of the papers for gram to have a permission to watch Naomi and Owen.

  18. I want to add on to alex,i disagree beacuse just what happened in the book doesnt mean hes not smart owen is just being optimistic hes being opisite thats he said,oh did you remember that dead dog on the street or all those cockaroaches in the pink hotel or that spider in baby baluga that looked like a scorpion. and alex im not trying to be mean like I said,it doesnt show in the text that hes not smart any more

In the book, Becoming Naomi Leon, my first big idea was that Gram was really pessimistic because she was thinking badly about Skyla and what she would do to Owen and Naomi. I changed my thinking, now I think that Gram is very optimistic. One reason I think this is because it said in the text that they were going to Mexico to look for Santiago. They didn't know where Santiago lived and had no address or phone number, but Gram believed that they would find him in Oaxaca for the Radish Night, which was coming up.
Another reason I say this is because Gram was encouraging Naomi by handing her a notebook. Naomi uses the notebook as a resource to put all her thinking in to gather her thoughts about what's going on around her.

  20. At first I thought Gram was scared of the fact that Skyla could take the kids away from her. Now I think that Gram will take risks for Naomi and Owen. I know this because 1) Gram went to a big country to find one man and she had no address or a phone number all she knows is that he comes to the radish carving festival in Oaxaca City, 2) she is not sure if the judge will say yes to the guardianship of Naomi and Owen and if she loses against Skyla, Naomi will go live with Skyla and she knows Skyla is drinking and that's why she doesn't want Naomi to with Skyla, 3) she got temporary guardianship of Naomi and Owen and she knows Skyla is going to be mad when she finds out and she might go after them, and 4) she took the kids out of the country and apparently you're not supposed to do that if you have temporary guardianship ship and if Skyla finds out she could also use that against Gram in the court. This is why I believe Gram takes risks because she wants to protect the children.

  21. At first I thought Naomi did not get her soap carving talents from her family. She kept doing it for many years and that’s how she got good at it. Now I know that she got her soap carving talents from someone in her family. I know this because the text says that her dad Santiago’s side of the family carves very well. The text also says that Santiago goes to radish carving night every year and he makes the best radish carvings. Also his family in Mexico is mentioned for making really good soap and radish carvings.

Also Owen’s confidence is fading and Naomi’s confidence is growing. The reader can see when Owen and Naomi were talking, Owen started to worry. For example, he thought about dead racoons under a tree. Naomi was thinking about stuff like rainbows and Owen thought of dead cockroaches at the motel. It’s almost like Owen and Naomi switched brains.

  22. At first I thought Clive was nice because he bought Naomi clothes and Owen a bike. Now I think Clive is inconsiderate, disrespectful and malicious. I know this because Clive used Naomi's 1st bird soap carving with the wings in the flying position to wash the turkey grease off his hands. Another reason is that when Clive saw Lulu he right away said to get the dog away. The last reason I think this is because when Clive got Gram mad by asking her personal information he had a smirk on his face. This is why I think Clive is inconsiderate, disrespectful and malicious.
