In honor of Martin Luther King, Jr.

MLK once said:
"As you press on for justice, be sure to move with dignity and discipline, using only the weapon of love. Let no man pull you so low as to hate him. Always avoid violence.”

What do these words mean to you? Explain your thinking.

  1. These words mean to me that you shouldn't use violence to solve problems between people, you shall only use love and kindness to solve problems. I think this because sometimes I use violences to solve problems, but after that I start to feel guilty and then I say sorry to the person. Another reason I think this is because sometimes people are trying to hurt me and then I say stop instead of fighting back.

What I think MLK meant with this quote" As you press on for justice ,be sure to move with dignity and discipline. I think that means that fight for black peoples rights and and be proud for standing up for others because if you were crazy about it no one will take you seriously but if you had dignity people would listen you and amir you. That is what I think MLK meant.

What these words mean to me:
I think these words mean "To avoid distraction from pressing on for justice."And "To pay attention to those who are hurting you and cursing you,Because they might be hurt on the inside and they might be letting it all out on you.You must treat them nicely ,and maybe they will realize what they are doing and they will stop and fight back WITH you.".I beleive that MLK said these words in a longer, more poetic form to inspire people listening and to make people actually think about the words.

    1. Orli I think you make a beautiful point about inspiring people with MLK's words. He was a great leader and people tried to live the way he told them to. He was a very kind man.

  4. The quote to me means....

that you should not be violent but try to fight in a peaceful way, and just keep at it even if you are hurt.

  5. What this quote means to me is when you try to make things right in life, only use peace or love. Also, where it sais "don't let someone pull you so low to hate them", I believe it means not to fight back and to always avoid violence. Instead you could talk or convince people to get your point across, just like MLK used peaceful protests and speeches to convince more people every time. The last line means to me that violence never really makes things better, only worse. For me, this means that instead of fighting with my brother, maybe we could talk about what's wrong.Just like MLK said, whenever my brother and I fight it only makes things worse.

  6. I think the words "As you press on for justice, be sure to move with dignity and discipline." means that while you fight for freedom, you need to be strong and believe in yourself while also working hard. "using only the weapon of love." to me means to be really strong but be kind and don't get violent. The rest means not to hate anyone. This has taught me to never fight.

  7. these words that M.l.k once said are really meaningful to me because love and peace really do help in menu ways. one of the very important ways are to solve problems foe instance : if to people are fighting about who should have the last cookie instead go using violence just split the cookie in half , then problem solved and nobody gets hurt. And if somebody says mean things to you or hurts you just say pleas stop it instead of hating them or hurting them.

  8. "As you press on for justice, be sure to move with dignity and discipline." I think this means as you try to get equal rights, be sure to never give up, and keep protesting even when things seem hard. Don’t feel sorry for yourself, keep going. "Using only the weapon of love." I think this means use kindness to people no matter what, and your kindness will spread to them. "Let no man pull you so low as to hate him." I think this means don't let anybody hurt you so much that you hate him and you think he shouldn't have rights. MLK said everybody should have equal rights. "Always avoid violence.” This means if people hurt you, don't ever physically hurt them back. Two wrongs don't make a right.

  9. i think these words mean to just let it be like when you get in a fight just say "ok i think we should stop and just say sorry" and then you can be done and the person will give you peace. because M.L.K. did not use violence he used his words

  10. I think that the words mean to me peace and not to hate anyone, never use weapons against each other than words and be kind to each other , to never believe in the bad things people say and never be like a wild animal and show your manners to everyone . The reason I think this is because he said " never go as low to hating someone, move with dignity and discipline , using only the weapon of love. " never let a person pull you down to hating him or she. This is why I think this is what the words mean.

  11. What Martin Luther King's words meant to me was that you should always press on justice and you should always walk forward. When he said "Using only a weapon of love", those words touched me a lot. I agree with Martin Luther King Jr. and I stand with his words.

The words that say "let no man pull you as low as to hate them" mean to me is that, treat hate like it is a bad word! Don't take hate out on other people. the words that say move with dignity and discipline mean to lead if a group is led by the wrong kind of person; it basically means to lead.

  13. What I think Martin Luther King’s quote “ be sure to move with dignity and discipline”meant, not to use violence to solve problems, if you want to get a point across you should have good manners and be respectful. Also when Martin Luther King said, “Use the power of love” I think that meant, do not use violence use love and words to solve problems, we don’t have to get into physical fighting to prove our point. When MLK said, “let no man pull you so low as to hate him” what this meant to me is, even if a man hates you should not hate him too.

  14. MLK says 'Only use the weapon of love' this means that you should kill somebody with your love and they will love you back. MLK also said 'Let no man pull you so low as to hate him. Always avoid violence' this means that don't ever do something that you don't want to do and also never make violence.

To me, this MLK quote means that you should learn to control your emotions and be yourself. Don’t let anyone tell you who to be or what to think. You need to do what you think is right. I say this because when MLK said; “Be sure to move on with dignity and discipline.”
Having dignity means to know who you are and what you’re about. Discipline means that you know how to control your feelings and know how to deal with situations in a good way.
Also, when he says; “Let no man pull you so low as to hate him.”
This means that hating someone is really low and has no purpose.
“-Using only the weapon of love”, means that love can change someone. It can bring light to ones eyes and can bring people together. The last words are; “Always avoid violence.”
This means that violence doesn’t solve anything. It’s useless, so never depend on violence.

    1. I really liked what you said about controlling your emotions. That can be very hard to do. I also agree with what you said about being yourself and don't let anyone tell you who you are or what you're about.

  16. These words meant to that you always need to avoid violence. The only weapon that is as dangerous as a gun is the weapon of love. Violence is not the only thing to solve a problem between two people. All Martin Luther King wanted was black kids and white kids to join hands and to stop it, without being violent. The words that really touced me was when he said "let no man pull you so low as to hate them." I agree with every last word he said.

  17. Martin Luther King, Jr's words appear to me in very different ways. In the beginning of the speech, it says, "As you press on for justice," that line makes me think of "As we fight against segregation," because they are pressing, which means they are trying to get it and what they want is justice, and justice is the opposite of segregation. The second line says, "be sure to move with dignity and discipline." That makes me think of it as being nonviolent, and make good choices, because when you have dignity, you are graceful and that is exactly the opposite of violent, and discipline means to not give up fighting for this good cause. The third line says 'using the weapon of love." I thought that this told me very clearly that when fighting, fight peacefully and don't hurt anyone, and that is exactly what MLK did. The fourth line says, "let no man pull you so low as to hate him." This told me that you should let no man or woman make you so angry that you want to hurt them. And the last sentence in MLK's speech is, "always avoid violence." That told me that he was basically saying it's not really good to get into a fight, because then you are the one losing because you have sunk down to his level.

  18. “As you press on for justice, be sure to move with dignity and discipline using only the power of love”. Martin Luther King

When Martin Luther King said these words he meant when you fight for what you want, fight using the power of words not your fists. When you say something use your words wisely to make sure you don’t make the problem bigger. Also you need to control the way you talk to the person so there will be less problems. When Martin Luther King Jr. talked about the power of love, he meant love would cause less chaos because when somebody shows love, they mean no harm and they receive peace.

  19. Martin Luther King's words mean that you should always be nice and kind to people and that you should always stay away from violence because at the moment you are doing the violence it may seem right but later on it could turn out to be really bad for you. Martin Luther King's words also meant that being ignorant can be the worst thing in your life because being ignorant means you have a lack or knowledge and knowledge helps you through life and when you don't have knowledge life can be very hard for you.

  20. The words that Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. once said means to me...

Everything you do, do it with pride and be proud of yourself. Also don't let someone get you so mad that you use violence against them.

  21. I think it means, to make sure to have dignity when you try to get justice. And, discipline, using love only to tell people what you think and don't let anyone make you hate them. Do not use violence when you try to make a point. I think those are very wise words and you should always follow them. MLK made the quote referring to protests, but it also goes for other things.
