Think about what we have learned so far about fractions.
How are fractions and division related? How are they different?
Are fractions just another way of expressing division? Is division just another way of expressing fractions?
Explain your thinking with at least two specific examples.

Fractions and division are related, because fractions are cut apart pieces and in division you are cutting apart pieces. For example : 70 cut into half is 35.
ReplyDeleteIn fractions you are cutting pieces up into smaller pieces. For example : I have a whole brownie and I want to cut it into half's, so I cut one line in the middle and get two half's. Another reason that fractions and division is related, is because in division you are splitting numbers apart and in fractions you are doing the same thing but with smaller numbers or in shapes. Another reason is because if you have 4/6 and you want to make a fraction that is equal you divide it by two or you could multiply it by two or three if the fraction is an odd number, in division you could find another way divide the number and get another answer but it will still be added up to the starting number. Fractions and division are different because in fractions you are cutting a number in pieces that will be called fractions and in division you are cutting numbers and getting a smaller number but not a fraction. Another reason is that in fractions you have the denominator and the numerator and in division you don't. Fractions aren't another way of expressing division because in fractions you are cutting pieces out of a whole/wholes and in division you are cutting a number but not into fractions. Division is not just another way of expressing fractions, because in division you are cutting numbers into smaller numbers and in fractions you are cutting small numbers into pieces not normal numbers
In a good way just the right amount of words

DeleteYes I agree ,but adding on:
DeleteTo splitting a brownie into a half , you use division.
I agree with you I was going to say that but you posted so I had to think of soothing else so it didn't look like I was stealing your idea
DeleteI think fractions and division are related because
ReplyDeleteif you reduce the fractions it is dividing 1 fraction with ether 2 or 3 to make it into a different fraction, and if the numbers are odd than you have to divide it into 3 if the numbers are even then you have to divide it into 2 so for example if you have 4/8 you can divide it into 2 so the answer wold be 2/4,and if the number was odd then you would have to divide the number by 3 so if the number was 3/6 the answer would be 1/3, and if the number was 3/8 I would not be able to reduce the number.
I agree.
DeleteDivision is the opposite of fractions, but if you work with them you realize there still the same. Like if you had one dollar, you can spit that in to fours witch would be 4/25. I think it is hard the first time you do it. But when you keep trying and trying and trying, t will be easy because you will get it.
DeleteFractions and division are related,And I will show you how.
ReplyDeleteYou have a math sheet and you need to compare 2 fractions, Here's how:
1.You divide.
you take the numerator and divide it with the denominator.Of course you cant.
So you need to add a zero. But it is not an actual zero ,its a decimal,so you need to add a period too, to show that.
You do this with both of your fractions.
If you have a remainder, then you just add it to what you got.If your answer was 7 and the remainder was 4, then you do this 7 4/5 .
2. Then you compare them.If both of them are the same, then keep on dividing both of them, keep adding periods and zeros.
I like how you explained your thinking, but how does that show that fractions are related to division?
DeleteI think fractions and division are a lot alike. That is because a fraction is a the result of some division problems. To get a fraction you divide two numbers. For example, to get a half, you divide 1 by 2; to get three-fourths, you divide 3 by 4.
ReplyDeleteBut fractions and division are not the same thing. A fraction is a number, such as 5/13 or 9/11. Division is a mathematical operation, like addition, multiplication, and subtraction. It is something you do to numbers: it is not a number itself.
So fractions aren't just another way of expressing division problems. And division isn’t just another way of expressing fractions. , Although they are both similar.

DeleteThat is a great answer, Bebe it sounds exactly how Ms. Scarborough might describe it on the board. Now I'd like to change my answer because I think I understand it better.
DeleteThat is a great post and it's nice and clear.
DeleteFractions are the same thing as dividing the top number by the bottom number.
ReplyDeleteExample ¼ is the same as 1 divided by 4. Another example is 6/8 is the same as 6 divided by 8. But I don’t think fractions are the same thing as division. I think of it as how many parts are there to the number on the bottom. Mostly I think of a cookie pie when dividing something into parts of it or giving someone a fraction or piece of it.
I also agree with you and Indigo and great job!!!:)
DeleteI agree with you alex adding on to you another way thier the same is reducing because division helps fractions to get the answer
DeleteI agree with you Alex and I want to add on to you because in division you divide a big number by a smaller number and get how many times the smaller number goes into the bigger number. In fractions you are cutting a whole/wholes into pieces .
ReplyDeleteYes I agree.
DeleteI think fractions and division are kind of the same because when your dividing two numbers for exmple 2\3 you divied 2 by 3 and you will get your answer also division helps fractions to get thier answer because when your reducing you use division to get the answer for exmple 2/6 you use 2 to divied another exmple is 3\5 then you divied by 3 to get your answer because you use 3 because the numbers are odd and you use 2 because thier even.
ReplyDeleteI love all the detail on your blog today!!!:)
DeleteThank you!
Deletefractions are related to division i think because fractions are cut into pieces small or big like a box is 1 whole and then i spirit the number to 3s and i find 1/3 2/3 3/3 which is my whole box 1 whole. and division is divided into pieces like 15 divided by 3 = 5. and you could change a number to a fraction. they are different because fractions are cutting pieces to make a fraction sorta like a number and then division is different because you are sorting out a number not making a new one. i think fractions are basically a visual representation of division i think that fractions are another way of expressing division.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you when you said ''Fractions are another way of expressing division!!! :)
DeleteWhat we've been doing fractions. Is cutting the fractions smaller and using 1 whole piece out of it to get the fraction's bigger piece. For example 1/2 x 2 equals 2/4 that's the equivalent fraction. What we've been doing in division. Is making a division algorithm and asking ourselves how many times does this number goes in to the bigger number. And minus the number from the bigger number then adding the remainder to get the nnumber for it.
ReplyDeleteGREAT JOB on the blog today and I agree with you!!!
DeleteJohn, I like your piece, I agree on the things you said and you are right on your example because 1/2 does go into 2/4 2 times because 1x2=2 and 2x2=4,so that means its 2/4s.
DeleteI agree with you john when you said in fractions you are cutting 1 whole not smaller pieces
DeleteI think what we mostly have learned in class about fractions is what are fractions and how to reduce fractions. We also learned about how to multiply fractions. Reducing makes things more easy to compare fractions. For example to compare 4/12s and 12/4s you can reduce on of them,so you would in this case you would divide the 4 in 4/12s by 2 and you will get 2 and then you will divide the 12 by 2 and you will get 6 so thats 2/6.This would help you compare these fractions.Fractions is another way to express division because your dividing things into fractions. For example 1 whole divided into fourths or 1 whole divided into thirds. Fractions and division are related because they both have dividing in them. For example in division you divide numbers in fractions you divide wholes.Another example is in fractions:1 whole divided by 3=3/3, and in division: 132 divided by 11=12.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you simon that 11 is equal to 12 and divion is the same as fractions!!!
DeleteI agree with you on everything that you said except on how you reduce fractions. I thought that when you reduce you say how many times can 4 go into itself which is 1 and how many times does 4 go into 12 which is 3 and you get 1/3. I agree with you on everything you said except for how you said to reduce fractions.
DeleteI think that fractions and division are the same thing. To show that is 1 divided by 2 is really 1/2. Another reason is when you reduce and fined the reduce and say you want to reduce 20/25 you see how many times 5 goes in 20 witch is 4 and also 5 goes in 25 5 times. What we have learned in class to see equivalent fractions like 2/4=4/8 and also reducing fractions to make the fraction smaller to put it on a number line. If you want to compare fractions you would probely use long division. One method is of division is showing fractions for example 5 divided by 10 can be expresed 5/10. That is why I think division and fractions are the same.
DeleteI agree with you and i want to add on to you atticus Because when you said you probobley use long Division for fractions you divide the denomonator by the numerator but put a 0 at the end of the numerator.
DeleteI learned that fractions are the opposite of division. I said that because, in math today I was learning fractions. While I was doing that, I noticed that there was a little bit of division in one of the problems I did. Fractions and division are similar because the number on top of the fraction can always be divided into the bottom number. In division, you are trying to figure out how many times a number goes into another number.
ReplyDeleteDivision is a fraction, it is the line that separates the numerator and the denominator. It means "divided by" and so for example, a fraction like 1/5 is actually the same as 1 divided by 5. Also, they are different, because a fraction is not a whole number, it is a fraction of a number. But in simple division, you use whole numbers and not numbers that are a fraction of a number. For example, if you want to write 12 divided by 4 you could also write 12/4 because once again, the line separating the numerator and denominator means divided by.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you Chloe K. I think that fractions are the same as division but in some ways different. I would like to add on that when you are doing division and fractions, though, you probably will use different strategies for each one. This is another reason that fractions are different than division.
DeleteThe fractions are different. For example, a half is 1/2.
ReplyDeleteWhat I have learned about fractions is they are a part of a hole like if you have a ½ and a ½ you will get a hole also I learned that you can comair fractions by dividing them and lastly I have learned that well let’s say you have ⅔ and ⅜ ⅔ is greater because 2 is closer to 3 and you would have 1 left over from ⅔ and 3 is far from 8 and you would have 5 left over from ⅜ . fractions are related to division because you can comair fractions by dividing them also ⅗ is the same as saying 3 divided by 5 and let’s say you had a brownie and you want to share it with 4 friends you are dividing that brownie into smaller sections but you also get fractions out of those sections so everyone would have ¼ of the brownie . They are different because for division you are trying to see how many times does the smaller number go into the larger number for instance let’s say you are trying to see how many times 56 goes into 473. For fractions you are cutting a hole into smaller sections so let’s say you have a pie and you want to share it equally with 5 friends you would cut it into ⅕ and everyone will get ⅕ . fractions is not another way of expressing dividing and dividing is not another way to expressing fractions because of what I just said on how they are different.
ReplyDeleteI think that division and fractions are related because when you divide wholes using fractions, you use division to divide the wholes. I think that division is another way of expressing fractions for example: If I had a brownie and I had to share it with 4 people I would divide it into fours and each person would get 1/4 of the brownie, but I also used division to make the brownie into fours. I also think that division and fractions are different because when you use division you usually are dividing regular numbers, but with fractions you have more than one number together for example 6/8.
ReplyDeleteFractions and division are two different things but, in some ways are very much the same. One reason why fractions are the same as division is that you are basicly doing the same thing with both: you are splitting a number, or a whole, into smallar parts. An exsample of that is 1 hole split into 5ths and then 2 are shaded. This is almost exactly the same thing as 10 divided by 5 = 2. This is because in both equasions you are taking a number or a hole and making it into 5 or putting 5 into it and getting 2 as the answer. This means that fractions and division are basically the same thing just expressed in different ways.
ReplyDeleteFractions and division are the same in some ways and different in others.
ReplyDeleteFractions are similar to division in many ways. For example, fractions are smaller pieces in the whole, and division is the smaller numbers in a larger number. Take the problem 100 divided by 4. The answer is 25. 25 is the smaller number within the larger number, which is 100. Now, turn 100 in to 1 (I chose this because .100 = 1 whole) and cut it up into 4 parts and shade in one of the parts. That would be ¼, or .25. you can connect both in a decimal to fraction to whole way. Now do you see the similarities between fractions and division?
Well, there are some differences too.
In division, you are mostly focusing on the smaller number within the bigger number as a whole. For example, in division, you might see 25 as a whole.
But in fractions, you see numbers more as fractions or decimal points like ¼ = .25
You may see fractions, decimals and division in many ways, but they have basic rules that bring them together.
I think fractions and division are related because you can use division to compare the two fractions and in fractions you are breaking wholes into smaller pieces so you can divide . Then in division you are breaking a big number into a smaller number just like fractions. Fractions and division are different because in fractions you are breaking numbers down from 1 whole (unless the fraction is improper) and in division you are dividing
ReplyDeleteabout 10+ wholes. I also think that fraction aren't another way of expressing division and division is not another way of expressing fractions.
I think that fractions and division are related because when you are doing fractions you split the whole into parts and when you divide you are dividing the whole into an amount. I think that fractions are just another way of expressing division because when you are doing fractions you are dividing a whole into parts. And that is basically what division is.I think division is just another way of expressing fractions because when you are dividing you are splitting the whole into parts and those parts make a whole. In math we have learned a lot about fractions such as improper fractions, mixed fractions and how to put fractions on a number line, reducing and other stuff as well. We also learned how to make an improper fraction into a mixed number, and to how make a mixed fraction into an improper fraction.
ReplyDeleteThey're related because you can do division like a fraction. A fraction is how many times a whole is divided. For example you have a pie and it is cut into six pieces. Each piece is 1/6th and this means it takes 6 pieces to make one whole pie. You would say the pie is divided into six.
ReplyDeleteBoth division and fractions have lots of ways to solve the problem. For division you can do long division or straight out equations or write sentences and solve it like that. For fractions you can use area models, and you can do long division. To get a number so you can compare fractions you divide the numerator by the denominator.
Fractions are another way of expressing division. So let's one fourth is a quarter and and you multiplied that by four you would have a whole dollar. Then if you divided the dollar four times, you end up with the exact same thing you started with.
ReplyDeleteDivision and fractions are the same. I know this because: when you’re working with division and fractions you take the whole or (wholes) and you split them. Also for example if I have five pies and i split each pie once i will get ten pieces and the equation would be 5 divided by 10= 2. Then one half then 10/2 then reduce it like this the fraction equation would be 10/2=5/l= 5.
ReplyDeletefractions are the same as division because both of them you can split... in different ways. when you are splitting a fraction, you might reduce it. like this: 6/8 = 3/4. when splitting division, you need to split up the number and then do separate division problems. there is a difference. Also, when doing division, you can do division with fractions. Like when your reducing: 6/8 - 2/2 = 3/4. thats an example of dividing fractions.
