  1. I learn facts about the Iroquos is later around 1722, the Tuscarora moved from present-day Virginia and north Carolina and joined the Iroquios as a sixth tribe. the Iroquios`s strongly defended their territory from other tribes, including the Huron who lived to the north in Canada.Early longhouse settlements tend to be small with about fifty or so people. however, between 1550 and 1675 villages grew to several hundreds of people. Iroquios usually built their villages on high ground stream. Iroquios are in five tribes the Cayuga, Onondaga, Mohawk ,Seneca, and Oneida. the french named them the irouois, but they called themselves the Havdenosaunee which means people of the longhouse. the British called them the Five Nations.

  9. Iroquois
The Iroquois called themselves “Haudenosaunee”, meaning “people who live in longhouses”. They were a diverse group of six individual tribes that were held together by a common culture and set of shared traditions in the Northeast regions of North America. The Iroquois or Haudenosaunee are a historically powerful northeast Native American confederacy in North America. The Iroquois grew crops such as corn, beans and squash. The British called the Iroquois the Five Nations.

The Iroquois migrated to America 12,000 to 15,000 years ago during the Ice age from Asia and Europe. These Native Americans once lived along the St. Lawrence River located in what is now known as New York State. Each tribe in the Iroquois League had its own elected officials called chiefs. They lived in longhouses. The Iroquois were a matriarchal society, meaning that the women were in charge. The Iroquois people carried out six major ceremonies during the year.
The Iroquois men hunted wild game including deer, rabbit, turkey, bear and beaver. Their clothing was made from tanned deerskin. The men of the Iroquois Nation shaved their heads except for a strip down the middle. The Iroquois men were warriors, tradesmen, and hunters. The Iroquois traded excess corn and tobacco for the pelts from the tribes to the north and the wampum from the tribes to the east. The Iroquois people slathered protective lotion (like petroleum jelly) onto their skin. Today, many Iroquois people still live in New York State or across the border in Canada in the areas of Ontario and Quebec.
