We learn a lot about a character's beliefs when we look at their actions.
For example, Naomi believes she belongs in Mexico. We know this because she said, "No wonder my father likes Posados" and she cried with joy and sadness at the same time. She imagined Graciela marrying Santiago and they would all go to Posados each year as a family. "I would never have to go back to Lemon Tree and take the chance of having to live with Skyla," she said.
Think of one of the main characters in Becoming Naomi Leon and their actions.
What do their actions tell you about their beliefs?
For example:
Gram believes family is important. I know this because...
Clive believes it's okay to use people. I know this because...

Skyla's belief is that help is worth nothing. I know that because when Skyla was playing checkers with Owen he went easy on her because he new he would beat her since he was so good and didn't want to make her feel bad but she got really mad and made him play harder.
ReplyDeleteClive thinks it is okay to use people and jugde someone by thier looks. For example when owen was playing checkers with skyla and he won thats when clive found out that owen was really good at checkers that he won playing against a grown up and said''why dont we take owen to las vegas and bet off him,and people will think he is not good at it''.And that means that clive thinks you can jugde someone by how they look and you can use them. Another example is when Clive used Naomi's soap carving from thanks giving to clean the greese from his hands. My last example is that the only reason clive needs to take naomi to las vegas is because he needs her to babysit his daughter,Sappirer and that means he is using Naomi.
ReplyDeleteskyla belives that a kid has to act like a adult i know this beacause she act's like a three year old for exanple skyla wanted naomi to speak up also she hit naomi on the cheek also she called her own son crippled and then she acused naomi of talking back when she did't do any thing because skyla is a acholic.
ReplyDeleteA belief is Owen started to believe that life isn,t always positive. At the begginning of the story he was really exited about everything like when he found the penny and he said "find a penny pick it up all the day you'll have good luck!" Then when Naomi,Owen, gram,Bernardo and fabiola were on their way to Mexico Owen started to change and see negative things like the dead dog on the sidewalk and the cockroaches at the pink motel. He started to see negative things after Skyla was shouting and slapped Naomi. He could not take it. Skyla was shouting and slapping Naomi. And that made him realize not everything in life is positive. Like Skyla and Clive.
ReplyDeleteGram believes that no child should have to suffer the consequences of being in the wrong hands. For example,Gram said that she would go to the end of the world to protect Naomi and Owen.Another example, is that in the chapter before Naomi and Owen wake up to find themselves on the highway traveling to Oaxaca City, Naomi was worried that Skyla would be able to take her and Owen. But Gram said that she had a plan to keep Naomi and Owen safe.A third example, is that Gram never thought that she would go to Oaxaca city just to keep Naomi and Owen safe from the thought of Skyla.Another example is that Gram decided take this incident to court on January seventh.
ReplyDeleteI know that Owen believes that there is always a bright side of things. I know this because Owen thought that Naomi was sad because the wash wasn’t working at spray n’ play. I know that Skyla thinks that mentaly chalenged kids are useless. I know this because she didn’t agree with Clive on taking him to Las Vegas to get money, and said he didn’t have a brain in his head. I know that Clive thinks using people is ok. I know this because he wanted to bring Owen to Las Vegas to play chekers, and get money.
ReplyDeleteOne action and belief is Graciela believes generousity is everything one example is when Naomi started crying taers of joy Graciela hugged her and said "it's ok Naomi" and made her feel better.Another example is when they were walking home Graciela was holding Naomis hand kept looking down at her and smiling. My last example is Graciela said that she would never leave Ruben to go do her own things, after Naomi asked if she would ever leave Ruben to go live her life.My last belief and actions is Gram believes family is impotant. One example is Gram said that she would go to the end of the worl to keep Naomi and Owen away from Skyla and in general.Another example is after Skyla didn't comme to th parent teacher confrence Gram took Naomi and Owen to plan and spray to cheer them up a bit.My last example is Gram never thought she would go all the way to Mexico jus to save Naomi and Owen from Skyla taking them. Those are all my Becoming Naomi Leon actions and beliefs.
ReplyDelete'
Skyla believes it is okay to leave family behind. One action that proves is when Naomi and Owen were little Skyla left them in a hotel to babysit themselves. My second action is when it was Naomi's parent- teacher conference Skyla didn't show up.The school had to call Gram so she could take Naomi and Owen home.My third action is when she told Naomi that they were going to leave to Las Vegas and they were going to live there. She also said that Owen was going to take care of Gram and they were going to stay in lemon tree. She said that Naomi would have a sister and she would babysit Saphire too.
ReplyDeleteOwen believes that he belongs in Mexico like Naomi, for example Owen is happy because people in Mexico don't make fun of him.Another example is that Owen has a friend in Mexico,Ruben. My final example is Owen wants Naomi to be happy and Naomi is happy in Mexico.
ReplyDeleteOne of Clive's belief's about life is that money is more
ReplyDeleteimportant than family. One reason Clive believes that is
because he saw that Owen was really good at chess
so he said "lets have him gamble with a few men and
we will get some money out of him.'' Another reason Clive thinks money is more important then family is because he asked Naomi to come with him to Las Vagas mostly because the government gives money to kids
to help them, so Clive wants money from the government. Those are my three reasons Clive thinks money is more important then family.
Gracielas belief is that you should never leave your children behind the actions are Naomi was crying(in joy)
ReplyDeleteAnd graciela gave Naomi a hug and said they shouldn't have left you and I would never leave Rubin.Graciela didn't have a husband so she was single and Naomi was wondering once they find there father Naomi would like Santiago and Graciela to get married and have Rubin as Naomi's step brother besides having skyla as her mother and taking Naomi Los Vegas take care of sapphire to get money and give it to Clive skyla's husband or boyfriend
I think that skyla doesn't care a bout anybody she only cares a bout herself. She wants everybody to be like her, she always thinks that if you have a disabilitie you'll never get fixed. she acts like a little kid, for example when owen played a game with skyla she acted like a baby.
ReplyDeleteClive believes that it is okay to use people. I know this because Owen played Skyla and Skyla said, "Yay, I won!" Then when Skyla found out Owen wasn't trying to win, Skyla forced him to try his hardest and Owen beat Skyla in a matter of minutes. Then Clive said, "We can take him to LA to some guys I know and we could bet on him." Clive also wasn't thinking if it was okay with Owen and just wanted him for money and nothing else and thought that was okay.
ReplyDeleteClive is not nice because when it was Thanksgiving and when he was going to wash his hands he used Naomi's best soap carving and he left it in the sink broken up into pieces with turkey stains all over it. He knew it was a decoration for the table. Also he knew it was not soap to wash your hands with because it was clear that it was shaped as a bird. That is inconsiderate.
ReplyDeleteAlso Clive believes that if you treat a kid in a bad way and if you kind of be nice at the same time, usually kids sometimes do not realize that you are being mean to them and the parents are trying to use the kids for no good reason and to get money. Clive thought "if we get a second child the state will pay us because raising two kids at the same time is not easy."
Owen believes that everything is optimistic and happy and can be fixed. I know this because in the text it said Naomi was sitting on the lawn with her knife and frustration shavings of soap around her he said “It’s okay Naomi.” In Mexico even when Naomi is having emotional fits about Santiago he is grinning and having a great time with Reuben. For example Owen was grinning from ear to ear at Las Posadas while Naomi was crying of sadness and happiness. And when Naomi was having a bad day because she found out about Skyla. At the beginning of the book at the Spray and Play the car wash wasn’t working and the ice cream store wasn’t open, Naomi was crying but then Owen said “It’s okay Naomi, you can stop crying the car wash is working.”
ReplyDeleteIn the story Becoming Naomi Leon, Graciela believes that leaving your kids and doing something you might rather be doing is not something that a mom should do, and she is very happy living with her son. For example, in the text Naomi asks Graciela why wouldn't she rather leave Rubin and do something else that's fun like Skyla did. But Graciela said "No Naomi, I like living here with Rubin."
ReplyDeleteThe character Skyla believes that she should always get her way. An example of this is when she wanted to take Naomi to Las Vegas. Naomi didn't want to go and gramps said no though Skyla still wanted to take her. Skyla also can be very inconsiderate she left her kids for seven years. Skyla expected them to remember her and hug her but she wasn't their to raise them. Owen never got to meet his mother when he was little.
ReplyDeleteNaomi believes finding her father is the most important thing. For example, after Graciela told Gram and Naomi that they haven't heard from Teresa for three days Gram said probably they weren't going to find Santiago. Then Naomi scooted out her chair and yelled, "we will find him." Another example of Naomi's belief system is when gram, Fabiola, and Graciela were shopping Naomi, Owen and Rubin were looking through the phone book to find Santiago Leon. The last reason I think this is Naomi's belief is when Naomi brought her notebook to the cheese lady to collect facts.
ReplyDeleteSklya believes money is the only thing that matters. Her actions said she would go to Las Vegas and gamble with Clive.
ReplyDeleteClive believes money is the only thing that matters because he wanted Naomi to babysit Saphire so he could get money from the government.
Gram believes she is not going to find Santiago. Her actions said that they are two many Santiago's in the phone book.
Naomi believes never give up. She went into the phone book even though Gram said no.
Owen thinks he belongs in Mexico. He loves playing with Rubin. No one makes fun of him in Mexico.
I think Gram believes that family is important. I know this because she stood up for Naomi when Skyla wanted to take her to Las Vegas to be a babysitter for Clive's daughter Saphire. But Naomi didn't want to go to Las Vegas with Skyla and Gram said, Naomi is not going to Las Vegas with you are a horrid, selfish, mean women. Gram especially did something else, she said she would go to the end of the world to save Naomi and Owen.
ReplyDeleteClive is not nice because when it was Thanksgiving and when he was going to wash his hands he used Naomi's best soap carving and he left it in the sink broken up into pieces with turkey stains all over it and he knew that it was decoration for the table. Also, he knew it was not soap to wash your hands with because it was clear it was not a soap bar because it was shaped like a bird and that is inconsiderate.
ReplyDeleteClive believes that if you treat a kid in a bad way and if you kind of be nice at the same time usually kids sometimes do not realize that you are being mean to them. And the parents are trying to use the kids for no good reason to get money. Clive said, "if we get a second child the state will pay us because raising two kids at a time is not easy."
Clive believes it is okay to use people. I know this because he said he would bring Naomi to Las Vegas so she could babysit Sapphire and get money from the government. Clive also said he could bring Owen to some guys so Owen can play them in checkers because Owen is good at it and Clive wanted to get money. Clive was probably thinking maybe if I bring Owen to play these guys they'll think he can't play but then they'll lose and I'll get the money.
ReplyDeleteI know that Gram believes that family is important. She thinks children are important and she will not let a kid be in the wrong hands. I know this because in the text it said children should never be in the wrong hands.
ReplyDeleteClive believes it is okay to use people. For example, it said Clive wanted to use Owen to get money. Clive also tried to use Naomi to go to Las Vegas to babysit Sapphire.
Santiago believes that if you are brave things will be as they are meant to be. I know this because Santiago made Naomi promise to be brave in Lemon Tree. He promised to be brave in Oaxaca.
ReplyDeleteWhen Naomi was carving a dog and she accidentally cut off its running leg, she was disappointed. But Santiago said that maybe she was meant to carve a three-legged dog.
Santiago did not try to mess with Naomi's old life in California. He said that she would carry Oaxaca in her heart but that Naomi could never stay in Oaxaca and he could never live in Lemon Tree because he could only sell his carvings in Oaxaca and Naomi had a life in Lemon Tree.
naomi belives that she should stay in oaxaca becacuse during the podas she said that graciela should be her mother and when she would find her father that they would get married and they have to stay in oaxaca and they would not have to the court day and face skyla and clive.
ReplyDeletehi I love this it helped with my studies thank u
