Read the following excerpt from Walt Whitman's Leaves of Grass.
I am of old and young, of the foolish as much as the wise...
Stuff'd with the stuff that is coarse and stuff'd with the stuff that is fine,
One of the Nation of many nations, the smallest the same and the largest the same,
A Southerner soon as a Northerner...a Hoosier, Badger, Buckeye...
At home on the hills of Vermont or in the woods of Maine, or the Texan ranch...
Of every hue and caste am I, of every rank and religion...
I resist any thing better than my own diversity,
Breathe the air but leave plenty after me...
Vocabulary
coarse: rough
Hoosier: a native of Indiana
Badger: a native of Wisconsin
Buckeye: a native of Ohio
hue: color
caste: a social class

i believe that walt witmans message is that every bods the same and we all breath the same air so there should be no separations between the rich and the poor so i believe that my message is that everybody should not be the same but you should be equal and fair and that's my message.
ReplyDeleteTo me the message in this poem is that nobody should be treated better than another because of how much mony they have or there culture.I think that is the message because in the poem it said
ReplyDelete''Stuffed with the stuff that is coarse, stuffed with the stuff that is fine, one of the nation of many naitions, the smallest and the largest, the same''.To me that meant no should be treated better than another no matter what. How this relates to my life is because every day I see people being treated better than another because they dont have good enough close than another because they dont have alot of money or they are not the same culture then another,no matter what no one should be treated better than anyone else!
Walt Whitman's message is that whatever type or kind of person you are, you should all be treated the same like when Walt said," Breathe the air but leave plenty for me." He believes that everybody should be able to read his book and enjoy it no matter what skin color they have or what religion they have. This message relates to me because I think that all people should be treated the same, and nobody should have less rights then anyone else. Also, a lot of other people think this because nobody wants to be treated less than anyone else!
ReplyDeleteOne of Walt Whitman's messages is everyone is equal. I know this by when he wrote "A Southerner soon as a Northerner" "One of the Nations of many nations, the smallest the same and the largest the same..." Another message is that you should take your share but leave enough for others. He says this when he wrote " Breathe the air but leave plenty after men..."
ReplyDeleteThis passage relates to my life in that I feel comfortable and safe in my neighborhood and school. I am a part of a community
I think the message in Walt Whitmans poem is that no matter where you come from you are still equal to the people around you.For example, in the poem it said,"One of the Nations of many nations, the smallest the same and the largest the same".This means that our nation has equality to other nations around us.This poem relates to me because sometimes I have the thought that I am different from everyone, when really I'm the same as everyone else surrounding me.
ReplyDeleteI think the message in Walt Whitman's Leaves Of Grass is it doesn't matter who you are we are all the same no one is special. One reason I think this is the message is because on paragraph 6 it says " Of every hue and castle am I, of every rank and religion" also in paragraph 7 it says " I resist anything better than my own diversity". Both of these paragraphs prove my point because they mean every person is important and he resists anything who thinks their special.
ReplyDeleteOne way this message connects to me is then people thought they were special. Plus now they think their special. Everyone isn't caring for others and think what they do is fine but it is actually is wrong. I feel the same way Walt Whitman did I want to avoid and resist those uncaring people.
What walt whitman,s poem meant in the poem was that who ever you are you are as talented and important as all the other rich and famous people and you are just fine how ever you are black wight rich poor or famous you are as important as everyone else. how this poem relates to my life is that the school I go to is very divers and teachers treat black and wight kids the same and the poor and the rich the same and its a community and my naborhood is too and the whole world is too
ReplyDeleteI think the message in Walt Whitmans poem is that everyone should be treated the same. For example in the poem it said "I am of old and young,of the foolish as much as the wise..." This shows that Walt believed that no matter what type of person you were you should have the same rights as the others.Another example is also in the text it said "I resist anything better than my own diversity, breath te air but leave plenty after me..." This shows that Walt thought if they breath the same air sa me then why are they treated differently. This message relates to me because I always see homeless peope on the street and they would walk around to get money and sometimes the cops are there and they will tell them to stop and I feel like I want expode!I wish they could have their rights and keep going around asking for money. Also sometimes when my dad is getting off the ferry to go to work the cops are there to check bags and they never check anyone's bag but sometimes they just ask my dad if they can search his bag because he has dark skin and they think he looks suspicious and I wish that the cops could stop being annoyin and stop telling him they are going to check his bag!
ReplyDeleteOne of Walt Whitman's messages is that no matter what skin color you are or how rich or poor you are or where you are from everyone should be treated with respect and be treated equally and everyone should have the same rights .
ReplyDeleteThis relates to me because kids who were playing basketball wouldn't let me play because I didn't have the same shoes as them.
ReplyDeleteI think Walt Whitman's message from "Leaves Of Grass" is, it doesn't matter who you are, we're all the same, no one is special. One reason I feel that this is the message is in paragraph 6, it said "Of every hue and castle am I, of every rank and religion". Also in paragraph 7 it said, "I resist anything better than my own diversity". This helps prove my point because paragraphs 6 and 7 mean that every person is important and Walt Whitman feels everyone should resist anyone who thinks their special.
ReplyDeleteThis poem's message connects to me, because back then people thought they were special, and now people still think their special. These people think what their doing is right but it actually isn't. I get freaked out when I'm around careless people. I agree with Walt Whitman, because I try to resist and avoid those kinds of selfish people.
I think Walt Whitman's poem means for everyone to treated equally and have equal rights. The rich and the poor should be treated the same. The black and the white should be treated the same. We should not be treated better than others because of our skin or our wealthiness. We should all be treated equal so everyone has peace that brings us together. This message relates to my life because as I grow up I hear all about what slavery was like and how it affected lots of people and how the black got treated differently then the white. Its better now and times have changed. And I am glad. (:
ReplyDeleteWalt’s message in the excerpt from leaves of grass is that people are not meant to be separated by hue or caste and America is for everyone.I know this because he wrote “Of every hue and caste am I, of every rank and religion. . .” and “I resist any thing better than my own diversity.” This message relates to my life because today years, and years after Mr.Whitman wrote that poem there is still a sense of sections and excluding. For example at school, kids have special groups and exclude other kids. There is separation of genders at school too.
ReplyDeleteI think that Walt Whitman is trying to relate that we are not perfect. By creating opposites when he is both wise and foolish. Walt Whitman was a humanist he cared about all people. Also he wrote his work during a time when racism was normal thing. He wanted to defend people's right. Walt noticed that blacks should be treated the same as white people.
ReplyDeleteWhitman talks about America and he is saying it is a great country and how you can do so much opportunities. It does not matter who you are, where you come from, what religion you are from. It is just like my friends. They are different colors, different religions and from different places and they are all important in my life.
ReplyDeleteWhat Walt means in his poem “leaves of grass”, that he is speaking for everyone who is different and unique. walt talking about the people who are foolish and very wise, walt is talking about who have bad manners and the people who are just fine.also walt talks about one nation of many nations and how they are just the same. he talks about all the people and i think Walts message is that everyone is diffrent and just the same talking about the old and the young foolish and the wise and everything else in “leaves of grass.”
ReplyDeleteI think the message in Walt Whitman is that it does not matter where you are from, does not matter if you are young or old,if you are foolish or not and if you are smart or not it is still about you.I know this because in the poem it said"I am of old and young as much as the wise". I also know this because he visited other places with his notebook and wrote seed ideas for his poems. He wrote poems in newspapers but not common people could read his poems because only rich people could buy them. They couldn't buy the newspapers because they cost too much and they couldn't afford it.This relates to me because when my friend was playing with her friends that were older the other kids just said you are too small to play with us.
ReplyDeleteI think Walt's message in these words is that we are all the same, black, or white, if we live in the south, or north, rich or poor, foolish, wise, young, old, no mater where you are, or live, we are all the same in not just one way, but lots of ways.
