The Gold Cadillac

Think about the author's message in The Gold Cadillac.

How do the father's feelings about the gold cadillac change from the beginning to the end of the story? Why do his feelings change?

Explain your thinking with details from the story.

  1. In the beginning of the story Wilbert thought that the Cadillac was a good car, better than the mercue, thier old car. Wilbert loved the car because it was shiny, expensive, and it was the best car of thier time.
In the middle of the story Wilbert was kind of changing his mind about it, but he still kept it.
At the end of the story Wilbert sold the car because he thought that it was dividing the family because it got him arrested for 3 hours, and they had to sleep in the woods, they drove south with it, and that is a dangerous place to be if you are colored.
This all means that Wilbert changed the way he thought abput the car from the beginning of the story to the end.

  2. The authors message in The Gold Cadillac by Mildred D. Taylor is family comes first. In the beginning of the story the father was proud of buying the gold Cadillac even though they had a car that wasn't even a year old. This bothered the mother. Later in the story, the Cadillac divided the family. The dad liked it but the mom didn't because it was a waste of money. His feelings changed because they went to Missisippi and the father got pulled over because of the gold Cadillac. One example of his changing his mind is he sold. The Cadillac because it was dangerous and he wanted to keep the family safe. Another example is his wife.said he could keep the gold Cadillac but he ignored her and refused to keep the car

  3. A message in The Gold Cadillac is that family matters the most. The fathers feelings changed about the gold cadillac from the beginning to the end of the story because the new cadillac caused trouble between his family and also got him in trouble as well. For example when he got the cadillac the mom was mad at him for getting rid of their perfectly fine Mercury without telling her and wasting a lot of their money to buy a new house. And he didn't want to lose his wife which would tear apart his family even more. And when he decided to drive the cadillac south to visit relatives in Mississippi and the police said he stole the car because they didn't think a black man would have such a nice car and then accused him for speeding, arrested him, and gave him a ticket. That changed the way he felt about the cadillac because it tore his family apart and got and got himself in more trouble than he bargained for and so he probably figured that it wasn't worth it.

  4. Some people change over time. "The Gold Cadillac" is about a girl and her family who head South and experience racism because they are a black family in a gold car. The father's feelings change about the Cadillac over time.
Early in the text the father felt proud of his new Cadillac. He felt proud because he had bought an expensive car in a segregated town and wanted to show off his gold car to the neighborhood, although his wife didn't. This shows that he felt proud in the beginning of the story but his feelings change over time.
Later in the text, the father shows his changed feelings about the Cadillac and doesn't need it anymore. After heading South and getting arrested and getting dirty looks because he's a black man in a gold car, he realizes selling the car is the best for his family. This shows that Wilbert's feelings changed and he knew what was right for his loved ones. His feelings changed from proud about a possession to feelings about people. His family was more important.
In conclusion, I hope these examples gives reasons why Wilbert's feelings change about the car. One time I had different emotions over time about something new too- my brother. It reminds me of "The Gold Cadillac".

  6. In The gold Cadillac by Mildred D. Taylor the father's feelings about the gold Cadillac change I know this because at first he is bragging about the Cadillac and showing it of. But then the family experienced racial profiling so he changed his mind and made the right decision by selling the Cadillac. I know this because the year in this book is 1950, so there was still racism.

  8. In the beginning Wilbert was obsessed with the car and was showing off with it, but his wife did not like it because she thought it was a waste of money because their old car wasn't even a year old, plus she wanted the money to buy a house in a nicer neighborhood. In the end Wilbert still loved the car (of course) but he felt that it was bringing him and his family a part so he sold it. Wilbert felt this way because he knew it was dividing his family. For example when he first got the car his wife thought it was a waste of money and she got very mad at him and said that if he bouught it alone he could ride it alone. but before when they didnt have the golden cadillac every sunday every one drove to the park and the women would sit and have a picnic while the men would shine their cars and the kids would run around and play but when they got the cadillac it brought them apart and so during this time the mom was super mad at Wilbert so it wasn't as fun as when they were not mad at eachother. Also Wilbert decided to take the car to Mississippi and that is where he and his family experienced racism. So the dad made the right choice and sold it and in the end Lois said that when they were all riding in the FORD they were a fmily again

  9. My authors message from The Gold Cadillac by Mildred D. Taylor is family comes first then anything. In this book The Gold Cadillac a girl and her sister, Wilma they move out south with her family in the gold Cadillac. Wilma and her sister, Lois experience racism up in the south. First the dad feels proud about getting his own new gold Cadillac but he changes his feelings about the Cadillac. He feels much better without the gold Cadillac and enjoys his new old fashion car. Early in the Wilbert shows that he likes his new gold Cadillac. First he was bragging about his new car and driving by the rich folks. Later in the text wilbert shows again that he loves the Cadillac besides his wife. So my second example is the aunts and uncles really enjoy the Cadillac including the two daughters but the mother doesn't except it just like the rest of the other people. At the end of the text Wilbert's feelings change. The gold Cadillac got him arrested because of how fancy the car was. Also the mother didn't like it so he exchanged the car into a old and rusty, old fashion car. In conclusion now you know that family comes first. This reminds me of when I had a drink that was my moms but it was so good that I drank it all and didn't really save any for my family to taste.

  10. My authors message from The Gold Cadillac by Mildred D. Taylor is family comes first then anything. 11. The author's message in The Gold Cadillac is that not everybody will trust you, even if you're innocent. They told him to spread eagle and then told him to get in the back of the car. They locked him up for more than 3 hours and accused him of speeding. They followed him by car out of town and when it was night, they turned back. The dad's feelings change about the Cadillac from the beginning to end because at the beginning Wilbert adored the 1950 Coupe Da Ville Cadillac but near the end he changed. His feelings changed because that journey to Mississippi made people think that no black man or black family should own a car. For example, the cops didn't like the fact that there was a possibility that Wilbert and his family, a black family, would be able to afford such a car.

  12. The feelings of the father in The Gold Cadillac changed because he realized the Cadillac drove his family apart. I know this because when he brought home the Cadillac the fathers wife said:"You didn't buy this car did you Wilbert"?"But...But our Mercury wasn't even a year old"! This shows that Wilbert's wife was not onboard and didn't like the Gold Cadillac.

Another piece of evidence is that Wilbert's wife had refused to go anywhere in the Gold Cadillac, and she had also had wanted to save money for a better house for her children and this also shows she didn't like the Cadillac and thought it was too much.

The fathers feelings changed when the Cadillac had got pulled over for speeding and stealing the Cadillac even though he hadn't. This was Racial Profile against Wilbert's family and Wilbert. Driving a fancy car had only made them a target especially if they were driving south where there was a lot of racism there. When Wilbert and his family got home Wilbert sold the Cadillac for the sake of his family. Getting rid of the car was a better decision and brung his family back together.

Now you can see that first Wilbert was excited about the car but then he realized the car got him pulled over and arrested. Now you can also see that getting the Cadillac was a bad decision and it was a better decision and had made Wilbert's family less of a target towards racism and discrimination.

  13. The message of the story is that family is more important than things. Wilbert changed from the beginning to the end because in the beginning he wanted to show off with the golden Cadillac to the rich folks because he wanted to show how amazing and expensive the Cadillac was. He was so happy and grateful that he bought the golden Cadillac but that also made the family separate. I know this because when Wilbert's wife came out to see what was going on she got surprised but not in a good way. In fact she was so mad at Wilbert that she just terned around and went back in the house. This shows that Wilbert's wife was made at Wilbert for spending the money that was supposed to be for the new house where Wilbert's wife wanted to raise her kids. In the end Wilbert's wife wanted him to have the car if it means a lot to him but when Wilbert experienced that the Cadillac separated the family but there other car made them as a family he decided that he was going to sell the Cadillac and get back the other car. Both examples show that Wilbert didn't raise his head up and then he figured family is more important then things.

  14. People’s feelings change based on the experiences that they learn from. In this book, The Gold Cadillac by Mildred D. Taylor, Lois and Wilma’s father have gotten a new car that Wilbert is very proud of. The children love the new car, but their mother does not. They decide to go to the south to see their relatives in Mississippi. They get exposed to very racist things there. The car pulls the family apart, which causes the father to change his feelings about the car.

Early in the text Wilbert is proud of his car and does not understand why his wife is not. For example, he took everyone in the neighborhood for a drive in the gold cadillac and he took his wife for dinner to talk things out. This proves that Wilbert had very proud feelings for the cadillac in the beginning of this book.

Later on in the text, the police pulled Wilbert over and accused him of stealing the gold cadillac. The police told him to “Spread eagle” and they kept him in jail for three hours, and accused him of speeding. This leads Wilbert to regret buying the gold cadillac because it has gotten him into a lot of trouble.

At the end of the book, Wilbert sells the cadillac and gets an old mercury instead. Lois gets a little embarrassed riding in the mercury after riding in the cadillac, but Wilbert tells her to hold her chin high. This doesn’t prove that Wilbert has changed his feelings toward the car. He may have, but he may also have sold the cadillac for the sake of his family, so they didn’t experience anymore racism.

In conclusion Wilbert may not have changed his feelings for the car but he sold it for the sake of his family. I can relate to this because I was very proud of my new airplane model but I had to share it with my sister because she did not have one and she was jealous.

  15. CHARLIE BANANA SMILEY FACE PART 2 DISTROING EVERYTHING WITH SO MUCH AWSOMENESSFebruary 26, 2015 at 8:48 PM

The authors message in this story is that fame is less important than family. The father's feelings change in the book. The car was separating the family, but then the dad sold it and the family got back together again.

Early in the text, the father bought a gold Cadillac and thought it would be so cool to drive around in a gold Cadillac. This supports the message because at the beginning, the mom hated the Cadillac, so she kept yelling at the dad. This shows that the Cadillac was breaking the family apart.

In the middle of the text, the family was being separated. For example, when the family was driving, the dad got caught and went to jail for three hours because the policemen though that he stole the Cadillac. The father started to feel like the car was bad because of what happened. The gold Cadillac was cool at first, but the dad went to jail because of it. This shows that the Cadillac is pulling the family apart.

Later in the text the family is brought back together. For example, when they sold the Cadillac, the family was happy driving around in their old car and that they were back together. The dad sold the car because he didn't want the family to be split up. Now the family is happy again. This shows that fame is less important than family.

In conclusion, now you know that family is more important then fame. Your family is who cares about you the most. When you are famous, then people don’t really care about you that much, they just care about your money. Also, you might have done something cool and they want to be part of it for attention. They don’t really care about you as a person, and to me, that is what matters the most.

  16. The father's feelings change because in the beginning he really likes the car but at the end he sold the car. in the book The Gold Cadillac by Mildred D. Taylor, the father comes back with a gold Cadillac and when they were going down the Mississippi bad things start to happen.

In the beginning of the story the father was really excited with the car. He drove the neighbors through a rich part of the town. This shows that the father is excited of the car because he drove the neighbors all over town including the rich part.

In the middle of the story he goes to Mississippi to see his grand parents. Then a police car comes behind them and said they were speeding so they put the father in prison for three hours. This shows that the decision to buy the car made the family scared.

Late in the story he decides to give up the car for the love of his family and now they are less of a target. I know this because when they turned back to go to his uncle's house he exchanged cars and he was less of a target. This shows that the father is changing because of changing the car he was less of a target.

In conclusion these three examples show that the father's feelings changed because of the trauma of being arrested for three hours is not fun. Also he scared his family so he decided to get rid of the car. And the car made him a target for racism.

The author's message is that you should listen to your family. My first example is that when the father brought the Cadillac the mother hated it. Though the dad didn't really care and drove around in it. My 2nd example is that when he told the family he was going to Mississippi they all said no, but the dad didn't listen. The reason why should listen to your family is because there worried and care for you.

  18. The fathers feelings change about the gold Cadillac from beginning to the end of the story, because in the beginning the father came with the gold Cadillac proudly, making everybody happy but everybody except Dee [the mother]. He didn't even know that Dee was right that there old car the mercury was perfect and that, that gold Cadillac could cause trouble for the people who think "do you have enough money to own that car"? But later on Wilbert changed one day while they were driving in the gold Cadillac 2 policeman in a police car came and asked Wilbert "who's car is this boy"? Then they made him go up on the car, finally they took him to the police station and locked Wilbert up in jail for 3 hours leaving Lois, her older sister Wilma, and there mother Dee. who were Wilbert's little girls and wife. After Wilbert understood that the gold Cadillac was trouble and Dee was right, so Wilbert got a new car and sold the gold Cadillac.

  19. The fathers feelings change about the gold Cadillac from beginning to end. At the beginning, he is proud of the car because it is gold and it looks expensive. At the end, he sold it because it was dangerous.
The car is so important to him that he got it over a new home and neighborhood. He could have gotten it any other color, but he got gold.
At the end, he sold it for the sake of his family because a white man could easily get suspicious and think he stole the car.

  20. The father changed his thinking about the Gold Cadillac in the beginning to the end. The Gold Cadillac is about a girl named Lois, and her father had just brought home a new Cadillac. This Cadillac is what causes problems for the family.

My first example that the father's reactions to the car changed is that at first the father was bragging about how fancy and beautiful the car was and how it belonged to them. This shows that the father was proud of the car no matter how much the mother disapproved.

Also in the middle when the family was going to visit family in the south, and after the father had been arrested for nothing, and they left the Gold Cadillac behind. This shows that the Cadillac was dangerous for the family and could separate them.

Another example that proves that the father changed his mind about the Cadillac, is when the family got home, and the father noticed that Cadillac and returned it. This shows that the father noticed how the Cadillac kept the family apart.

In conclusion, the father changed from bragging about the car, to selling it. This reminds me of many times when I had gum, and my sister hates gum, so I would give it up.

  21. The father's feelings about the gold Cadillac changes from the beginning to the end. I know this because in the beginning he was showing off his new Cadillac. He wanted to take the whole family to the rich folks neighborhood. At the end of the story he realizes that the Cadillac led them to bad things like racism. The father's feelings change because the mother said that they needed money for a new house in a better neighborhood. He thought the Cadillac might get them in more trouble. He made the right choice but it was a hard one. Finally the father sold the car to get money for the new house. The father thought the Cadillac was important because of how it looked. At the end the father thought it got in their way.

    ReplyDelete
  22. In the beginning of the story the father is showing off his gold Cadillac. An example of this is he took all of the family on their first ride in the Cadillac. He drove past many neighborhoods, including the rich neighborhood. Another example is that he told Lois and her sister to get everyone out of the house to see the new Cadillac. My last example is right when Lois arrived she heard her dad talking to the neighbors about the car.

In the end the father doesn't like the car. One example showing this is towards the middle of the story after they slept, the dad decides to take the car back to one of their uncles and borrow his car for the rest of the drive. Another example is when they arrive home the father shines up the Cadillac, drives off and comes back with nothing. My last example is when they were riding in the Ford, Lois felt embarrassed. But her father said, "Hold your head high. We all know that that car only brought us further apart."

  23. The fathers feeling about the gold Cadillac changed when he noticed it made his family go separate ways.I know that his family is being drove apart because, the minute he brought the Cadillac home his wife asked him why he was spending all his money on a Cadillac instead of saving money for a house for his family. This shows his family drifting apart.

Another example is when his wife asked him if the Cadillac was his and he said yes. This shows his wife didn't like the car ever since she found out he bought the Cadillac. This also shows how she started to drift.

When Willbert finally noticed his family was drifting apart he sold the Cadillac even after his wife said he could keep it.H sold his Cadillac because he had to sleep in the woods while his Lois held a knife,he spent 3 hours in jail and that is because the racist cops lied about him speeding and stealing the gold Cadillac.

Now you know how Wilbert's feeling toward the car changed and you also know how it tore apart hid family.
