The Old Stone House

Think about what you learned today about The Battle of Brooklyn and the Revolutionary War at the Old Stone House. Our instructor used an inquiry approach to teach us by reenacting the Battle of Brooklyn.

What "noticings" would you like to share about what we learned today? What questions do you still have about The Battle of Brooklyn and the Revolutionary War? Explain.

  1. The first thing that I learned is that the Patriots were out numbered but we're still able to defend against the red coats for a while. The second thing I learned is that there were different groups that were on the Patriots side including groups from Maryland,Boston, and Connecticut. The final thing that I learned is the British sent the most ships a battle until world war 2. Those were the most important thing that I learned from the trip.

  2. The first thing i learned is that when bill clinton went to jamaica they saw 5 amarica's and they had 10,000 solders so bill clinton won that war.The second thing i learned is that red cross only had 600 solders and vs bill clinton which had 10,000 solders. But the red cross won and they were out number. The last thing i learned is that patriots where out number and still defend against the british . my question is how did bill clinton get all those solders?

  3. My first thing I learned was that the Patriots were not just New York but Connecticut, Maryland and Boston. Also France didn't just become allies with the America in the beginning of the war, they joined almost 5 years later. The Patriots didn't really seem strong at first because they lost the Battle of Brooklyn, but they did win the Revolutionary War. The British might have seemed liked they would win but because George Washington was so encouraging and gained tons more soliders, we won. I also learned that during war, land can definitely be a advantage; also that you can't just go out randomly shooting at everything without a plan because you'll run out of ammunition and you could possibly be shot without any backup plan or defense as protection.

    1. I agree with you Kameron, i think the British thought that if they could win they battle of Brooklyn and other battles why cant they win the revolutionary war. I also think that King George the III wasn't so alarmed and encouraging as George Washington. He was calm about it and thought everything would go the way he wanted it to be.

  4. The first thing i learned was that the fisherman got up in
the morning just to do there job even when it's raining hard
out side the other things l leaned today was that a battery
also means a storage were they put weapons and other
stuff. I also know that the fisherman's help out a lot for
the colonies by trapping them. I also know that were one of the farmers you would bring animals, fruits, animals when you make your journey to
the west.I also know that they took things like plates, water, sewing stuff, compass, forks, some brought
drums some brought flags.I also know that the British,Germans out numbered the the colonist at the
    battlefield.

One of the things that I learned at the old stone house is that the red coats actually won the battle of Brooklyn but it was the patriots that won it in the end.Another thing I learned in the old stone house is that there was more than just two groups fighting in the revolutionary war there was Pennsylvania,Connecticut,Boston, and Maryland. The other thing that I learned on this trip was that the Patriots still won the revolutionary war even though they were outnumbered by the British. These three things are the most fastinaiting things I learned on the trip to the Old Stone House.

  7. I noticed that the environment of Brooklyn changes over time. I noticed that the hills in the Revolutionary War were near Prospect Park and now you can't see the hills. There was a lot more green in the Revolutionary War than there is today. Bay Ridge was just green and now there are houses, schools and parks. The buildings were low, like one story, and now they are 20 stories. I wonder how Brooklyn will look in 200 years.

I wonder why the British and the Germans did not split up into two groups because then they could have taken out two armies at the same time and it would have been easier to get to Brooklyn. I wonder what it would feel like being under British rule now.

What I learned about the battle of Brooklyn today was #1 that Brooklyn was named after broken land because it was all uneven.
Another thing I learned was #2 that the British won the battle of Brooklyn.
Also I learned #3 that there were 6 armies fighting in the battle of broken.
Another thing I learned is #4 that muskets didn’t work well in rain so that let the patriots get away.
Another thing I learned is #5 that some armies worked with others in the battle of Brooklyn.
The last thing that I learned is #6 that the bases they hid in and kept supplies in were called batteries. 

One new thing I learned during the old stone house trip was that conneticut was part of the battle of Brooklyn. A second thing I learned on the old stone house trip was that even know Americans lost there was a silver lining. The third thing that I learned was that the muskets back then did not work well in rain. A question I have about the Battle of Brooklyn is what were the people in the continental army thinking when the British attacked them.

  10. One of the things I noticed on the field trip to the old stone house was that whenever the troops moved they always marched on a road that led them to their next battle.

Another thing I noticed was one of the sides, either the patriots or the British, planned out the attack while the other side usually didn't have a clue when they were going to be attacked.

One of the questions I had was how many soldiers got killed all together, because that must have been a lot of sacrifices.

  11. One thing I learned about the Battle of Brooklyn is about the allies. I learned France didn't join America until 5 years later. I also learned more about how the British also had allies and more than 1,000 soldiers to fight with.
Another thing I learned was that the British/redcoats outnumbered the other soldiers. Also, I learned that it was a huge advantage to have more land - and especially higher land. This is because you have safety, and when you go up the land it takes hard work so when the other soldiers come they will have to climb the hill and shoot which is hard for them. I also learned it is good to have a strategy or plan for your soldiers because you need a smart way to sneak up on the other team, attack, or ambush them. Also, you need to spend your ammunition wisely because you don't have a huge supply.
Some questions I have are: Did all the soldiers have a hill for safety or a place for shelter? Did all the soldiers have allies? How many soldiers and man were lost when the redcoats won over the Patriots?

  12. the first thing i learned was that the patriots need to give them self a pate on the back because 400 troops hold off 10000 troops that was pretty impressive. The
second thing that i learned was that there three teams the germans the birtish and the patriots i also learned that the birtish and germans wrere allies i also learned that the birtish won the battle of broklyn and finally i learned that the old stone house was an important milestone

I all noticed today when we were at the old stone house it was very interesting exciting everybody was looking at all the maps and stuff but we're really interested me was when we all looked at the replica and notice what we we were all so excited when we looked at the replica is very interesting and I liked when we were in the groupX s but what really interested in me is when we all split up and we were in different groups like the Patriots and the British but everybody was kind of rooting for the Patriots even the British side but I noticed that when we looked in the replica everybody was so excited and so was I and I had a very awesome time at the old stone house.

  14. One thing I learned at the old stone house is that an army of 400 can hold off 10,000+ soldiers. I had also learned about he battle of Brooklyn and how the hessians [Germans] and the British allied to fight against the patriots. I had never knew that. I also learned about armies like the Maryland 400. Even though they did not have as many soldiers they still were well trained. Better trained the colonists. Thats why the Maryland 400 trained the colonists. That had taught me when you need a strategy you can use your skills to an advantage. I had also learned that area they lived in was much different from today. You don't see paved roads in 1775 and cars going down the streets. Instead it was allot of hills and forest area. Lastly I realized something different also about its environment. There was a huge body of water shaped like a sea horse. One part was the head, Belly, Feet. That was also different.

  15. My noticings from the old stone house are that even though the continental army were outnumbered they always very tricky in their plans. Another noticing that I had was that there was a fire place and the essentials for olden-day cooking and also there was white tiles with blue pictures and designs on them. I don't really have any questions and I really like the inquiry approach and map.

  16. Today I learned that the British used the Jamaican path and the short road path to get closer to George Washington ship. They did this to get closer to Beford path without being noticed. I saw where the battle of Brooklyn was and where all the nations met. The British had 500 ships and 10,000 troops. This led them to their victory. Something I wondered was did the french participate in the battle of Brooklyn? Also how many soldiers died during the war since it wasn't one of the most bloody war? Also how long did the war last ? I learned a lot of new things today from Graham that I never knew before.

  17. Today I learned that if it were not for the bravery of the Maryland soldiers holding off the British Army and rainfall that the Continental Army would have not escaped the British at the Stone Field House because the British did not follow them as rain effects the use of muskets, so they waited to go across the Gowanis Creek til morning.

The rain would prove to really help because many of the regiments had a special skill. The Mariners were able to use their boats to rescue the soldiers because they are fisherman and saved the Continental Army from being killed by the British.

This is a big deal because it kept the British from winning fast. I think this let the Continental Army and the farmers all believe that they can win against the British. Giving them hope. I bet it also helped more Loyalists become Patriots.

It was great to be in the Old Stone House from 1699 today where the best escape ever happened. So we could win the Revolutionary War later. Go Brooklyn!

  18. At the Old Stone House I learned that the Patriots were outnumbered at lost the battle of Long island or the battle of Brooklyn. The Patriots were outnumbered because it was 10,000 British and Hessians against the a few Patriots. Another thing I learned is that the Patriots didn't lose as soon as they might have. If they weren't out of ammo and had more soldiers they could have possibly won the battle. A question I still have is how did war start? Did they just attack when ever they want or do they do something else?

  20. Three things I learned about the Battle of Brooklyn are that 400 Patriots defended against 10,000 British and German soldiers, the British planned to end the war in one day and that the Patriots sailed to safety, away from loss. Three questions I have are: what was the reaction the British had, what was the next move for the British and what was the Patriots next move?
