  1. I chose the big idea (THEORY): My theory is that Catherine and David are becoming friends. My first piece of evidence is that David was saying funny things to Catherine like STUPID SPEECH WOMAN! MY second piece of evidence is that Jason asked Catherine to make the word cards and draw pictures on the word cards. That proves that Catherine and David are starting to become friends. Also, there are many different things that Jason said to Catherine like THANK YOU.

    4. I really liked the way you wrote the first piece of evidence like for example when you said that David (Jason) was saying funny things to Catherine like STUPID SPEECH WOMEN! It made me feel a bit funny.

  2. One evidence I notice is when Catherine goes to the clinic Catherine sees Jason, and Jason tries to say hi. The second evidence is having a problem doesn't mean Jason can't have friend.

  3. The main problem of Rules is that David has autism.That's a problem because his sister has to work hard to calm him down . Also David makes weird movements with his hands and arm's.This is hard for his sister because she get embarrassed in front of people.

    1. I agree with you that David's autism is a problem and I agree with your evidence , especially your first because Catherine also has other things to do like schoolwork and because she also wants to be normal kid and his autism makes that hard for her.

I think the character motivation for Cathrine making these rules is she wants David to act normal so he doesn't act stupid.She also makes these rules so he doesn't act stupid and embarass her.Example:when David screamed out"If someone says hi you say hi back,thats the rule".That must be very embarasing for her.She makes to make sure that dosn't happen.

  5. My big idea is one of the reasons Jason likes Catherine is because Catherine draws well.One piece of evidence is Jason liked Catherine's drawing and asked his mom to hang it on his wall! That's how they became friends in the first place! My second piece of evidence is when Catherine put the card she drew on in Jason's book,Jason pointed to the "GOOD JOB!" card.That shows Jason really likes Catherine's artistic style.

  7. I think Jason and Catherine want to be friends. The reason I feel that way because it seems jason wants her name in his book . Jason therapist speaks to his mother and not him and she asked why is he so cranky and Jason said "STUPID SPEACH LADY! "the mom embarrsed him.

  8. My theory is that Jason doesn't really like the speech woman because even though Jason can't speak, he can still hear like any other kid and the speech woman talks very loud ONLY to Jason. Also the speech woman speaks to Jason's mom instead of him. My final piece of evidence is that Jason pointed to the words "STUPID.SPEECH.WOMAN." and that means he doesn't like the speech woman.

I think the authors message is that life isn't perfect,but that doesn't mean you have to embarrass that because when David was saying 10,9,8,7,6,5,4,3,2,1 and he yelled out it's 5:00 and yelled for his dad Catherine embarrassed that.But also at the OT when Jason was communicating with her she embraced all the bad on what Jason's could be thinking she's embracing tarible stuff he's not thinking of.So that concludes my thinking!

  10. What motivates Catherine to make all those rules for David is so, David could try to act normal.My second reason why Catherine makes rules for David is so,she can prevent from getting embarrassed.

  11. I believe the speech woman doesn't think that Jason can talk for himself. I know this because in the text it says that the speech woman doesn't talk to Jason, only his mom. Also, I don't think that Jason likes the speech woman because in the text it says that he thinks of her as a "stupid speech woman" and he scowls when the speech woman doesn't talk to him, only his mom.

    1. Hey Ayodele, I would like to add on to your thinking by saying it would be hard for Jason to interupt them because he can't speak and for them to understand what he's trying to say they would have to be looking at his book and they weren't so nice noticing. :) :)

For my book talk topic I chose big idea and I went with Jason thinks deeply around Catherine and feels artistic around her and cofnterble talking around her.My first piece of evidence is he loved the minor details that she puts in her artwork. My second piece of evidence is he wanted her name in the book so he can talk to her and talk about her .There is my topic and my two pieces of evidence to support it :)

  13. I think one of the author's themes in Rules is loneliness. I think Catherine is lonely. I know this because my first piece of evidence is when Catherine's best friend Melissa went away to California for the whole summer and Catherine only has her brother David who embarrasses her. My second piece of evidence is Catherine gets very excited when she sees movers putting stuff into the next door gray shingled house. She feels like someone is moving in and she has her hopes high on the bar that she is going to play with her. Like hang out and do the fun stuff. Also the text says Catherine could do morse code, bake cookies with the new next door neighbor and swim in the pond.

  14. My theory is that Jason likes Catherine. My first piece of evidence is he wanted her to make him speech cards. My second piece of evidence is he made his mom go back to tell her he said he liked the picture she was drawing.

My theory is that Cathrine understands Jason because Cathrine shot Jason a look that means i also hate when parents do that.And i also think that's the case because she has an autistic brother so she could feel a little of what he feels.And i also think that all kids find there parents embarrassing sometimes.So all kids understand each other.And just because Jason is disabled doesn't mean that he is not like you.

My big idea is Jason wants to be friends with Catherine I know this because in the text it says he liked her picture so much he wanted his mom to hang it up on the wall also he wanted her to make a card of her in his communication book. Also I think the main problem is that Catherine doesn't like David for who he is. And my evidence for Catherine not liking David who for he is, is she said I wish David would wake up one day and be a normal brother like Melissa has and I wish she would say geez Catherine where have I been. And my second evidence is she makes rules for him so that at least he knows how the world works and she doesn't have to explain it and also so that he would be something like a normal brother.

  17. The main problem is that Catherine worried that David will damage her image when she is trying to make friends with her new neighbors.

    I know this because in the text when David was yelling and getting upset of dad being late, the neighbors saw it and offered to help. But David didn’t say thank you nor acted like a normal kid. Therefore Catherine was worried that she cannot leave a good impression to the neighbors. She loves David, but she wishes that she has a normal brother without Autism instead.

  18. I think the BIG IDEA in Rules is that Catherine cares about her little brother and tries to make David's life better.
    One evidence is when she covers David's mouth and says "Toad you look very green today and Toad says I always look green" to make him calm down.
    Also, she gives David rules to help him to act like a normal person like if he needs to leave, then pretend to have a watch and say "sorry, gotta go!!!".

I hear what your saying Mateu and I would like to add on.Catherine does try to make Davids life better but I also think that Catherine wants to have a normal life with out a brother who has autism. I also don't think that Catherine is trying to be mean she just gets embarrassed when David is with her and she is trying to make a friend.

  19. The author's message in "Rules" is never let anyone stop you from being you. I know this because in the text, Catherine is trying to be the new neighbor's friend. But it turns out that the neighbor isn't even nice. Also, Jason's mom keeps on saying things for him, him he can use his cards.

  20. I think the speech woman and Jason's mother think that Jason can not speak for himself,
    so I am adding on to what Ayodele said and the speech woman only talks to his mom but I dont know if you but the speech woman kind of talks to Jason because in the text the speech woman always says HI JASON.

  21. The main problem is that Catherine is worried that David is going to embarrass her and her image. I know this because the book says that David was counting down until his dad was going to be here and when his dad didn't coe he started screaming and the neighbor said "Is he okay?".

    My second reason is that when Catherine asked the workers when the new neighbors are going to coe and then David said "If soeone says hi you say hi back. That's the rule."

  22. My big idea that Catherine is really a caring and nice person.

    My first piece of evidence is that despite his disabilities, Catherine was very kind to Jason by giving him a sketch she did of her and her future friend.

    My second piece of evidence is that he sympathized with Jason when he didn't get the guitar from the yard sale.

    My third piece of evidence is that she created rules for her brother, David, to live in this world.

  23. I am writing about the book Rules by Cynthia Lord. My theory is some people have difficulties. Evidence 1 in the text it said David has autism and it's hard for him to do certain things. Jason can't talk so he has to stay in a wheel chair and he has to point at cards for people to understand him.

  24. I have a pattern to talk about and it is Catherine keeps bringing up that she did not like when people stare at David. I know this because in the text it says that when the movers give her the what's wrong with this kid face Catherine tries to make David stop. The other evidence is when Catherine tries to draw Jason's picture without him noticing it. She did that because when people stare at her brother it gets her upset. So that is my evidence.

    1. An author will write a thought more than once to tell the reader how she feels about a character. Your evidence shows the reader Catherine's behavior and her motivation for acting and feeling that way.

  25. I think that the author's message is that it's OK to look different and make mistakes like David and Jason. I know this because in the text it says that David has autism and he makes mistakes like yell in front of people or at his house. Also he takes off his clothes when he gets wet and gets Catherine embarrassed.

My second piece of evidence is that Jason asked Catherine to make more communication cards and that she should draw on them. Another word that Jason said to Catherine is "thank you" and I thought that was really nice.
