What inequalities do you notice during this time (early 1960s)?
ReplyDeleteAfrican American people faced a lot of differences than white people. I noticed in the movie that African American people were not allowed to go to the same bathroom, water fountains, workplaces, and buses, and more. In the beginning the girls were fixing a car. A police officer came to see what they were doing. Mary was sassy to him and the police demanded their ID. He monitored them to their work. This showed that they were seen as suspicious and were treated differently by the police.
What motivates the main characters to persevere in spite of challenges?
Their motivation was that they wanted to have the same jobs that white people could have and that men could have because they wanted to be successful and treated fairly. Mary wanted to go to a high school to graduate and she pushed herself to go because that was the only way she could get her job. So she used her goal as a motivation.
What has changed socially from then until now?
African Americans, and other people of color, are not allowed to be discriminated against because of their identity. So now they can use the same bathroom and work in the same jobs. Women also are now holding more jobs that were only for men back then. It is not perfect yet but nothing is perfect and we are moving forward.
What lessons can be learned from the movie?
A girl named Katherine tried her best to work with different people that she does not know yet. For 40 minutes she needed to go to the bathroom but the one for African Americans was so far away. When the boss didn’t understand he told her why she was being late and he changed the rules. So what I learned is that you have to stand up and speak up for your rights. And also you need to rise above your challenges.
I noticed that black and white people couldn't use the same bathroom ,work areas ,water fountains and they couldn't take books from the white people section in the library. Also females din't have equal rights Katherine had to force the boss to let her in the meeting. Katherine's husband thought a women wouldn't be in NASA.
ReplyDeleteHope for equal rights motivated them to keep going.Katherine wanted to be treated fairly along with everybody. When it got unfair she said the truth and the boss started to treat her a little more fairly.
Now people can use the same bathroom, section in the library ,buses and more. But a lot hasn't changed for a lot of jobs.Well I have never been to NASA so I don't know.
I think you should never give up even if it is really hard.Mary she couldn't do her job without more classes, so she worked hard and graduated from an all white school and got a job.
The inequalities I noticed during this time are the buses, libraries, schools and restrooms were segregated. For example on the buses white people got to sit at the front of the bus, but blacks they had to sit at the back of the bus.
ReplyDeleteI think what motivates the main characters to persevere in spite of challenges is their faith and courage.
What has changed socially is women get more respect. Also, whites and blacks can now go to the same schools, can marry, and we can travel together and live and work together.
I think one of the lessons is before you prejudge you have to have an open mind and get to know people for who they are. Sometimes you have to think outside the box. For example people were prejudging Katherine before they discovered how brilliant a human being she is.
1.
ReplyDeleteI noticed that there were "colored" bathrooms,Black people had to sit on one side of the bus,Black people were not allowed in the library and the white librarian thought they were up to trouble!
2.
I think what motivates the main characters persevere is that they needed to prove Black people and Woman can do the same amount of work and challenging things just like White people and Men.
3.
I think the things that have changed then and now are the buses, bathrooms, the fountains, and Black people are now already allowed to go in libraries.
4.
I think the lesson of the movie is that Black people and Woman can do the same things that White people and Men can.

ReplyDeleteWhat inequalities do you notice during this time? (early 1960s)
ReplyDeleteSome inequalities i noticed during this time period in the movie are: The librarys. There are two sections, one for colored people and one forwhite people. When a colored person, (DOROTHY) was in the all white section of the library. A white person told her, "I dont want trouble" and Dorothy said "I am no trouble" then Dorothy had to leave the library, she had to be escorted out by the guard. Women are treated differently then men. When Katherine was going to her new work-space all of the men stared at her until she sat down. Also Mr.Harrison didnt let her go into the meeting because she was a women and there was a rule that was olny men in that meeting. Colored people and white people dont work in the same area. There was an old dirty room that was for colored people and there was a clean shiny room only for white people. And theres way more inequalities i saw in the movie.
What motivates the main characters to persevere in spite of challenges?
The thing that motivated Katherine was she wanted to be treated how all whites are treated she wanted to have the same rights as whites she wanted to work together with whites. Katherine told the boss that she had to go outside and walk a long way just to use the bathroom. And the boss tore down the all white bathroom sign and said, "here at NASA we all pee the same color!"
What has changed socially fron then until now?
Now people of all skin colors, and genders could use the same bathrooms, they could work in the same areas, they all share the library, people can sit wherever they want on the bus, people couls use the same water foutains, they could use the same coffee machines, and lots more.
What lessons can be learned from the movie?
I think you should always have perseverance. Mary never gave up to go to an all white school, and Dorothy never gave up to be supervisor. Also you should always speak for what you think is right. Katherina always spoke for what she thinks is right, her being in that meeting, and that there shouldnt be an all white bathroom and an all colored bathroom.
Some inequalities I noticed are : colored people sit at the back of buses, different water fountains, different schools and a lots of other stuff. What motivates the characters is they want there rights to do jobs just like white people. Some things that has changed socially are : no colored signs, colored people siting anywhere they want to and black people working where ever they want. The lesson I learned from the movie is: never give up on your dream because Mary didn't give up on her dream.WE ARE ALL HUMANS AND ARE EQUAL
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with you joey because if you really wanted something for so long and it didn't turn out so well you should never give up you should always keep going!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Deletewhat inequalities do you notice during this time (early 1960"s)? In the movie Hidden Figures Katherine and her friends went through a lot to accomplish there goals. They had to sit in the back of the bus , when their car broke down the police officer asked for ID.Water fountains, jobs, shops, libraries, and bathrooms were segregated also men doubted that women was smart. Also black people had to work harder to get respect.
ReplyDeleteWhat I noticed in Hidden Feger's black people didn't have the same bathrooms, water fountains, section in library's,colored people had to sit on the back of the bus,and schools,Merry went to Cory to get in a all white school.
ReplyDeleteI think something else that's a inequality is women didn't get the same chance a man did. A lot of women still don't today.
I think what has happened between these time periods blacks moved up. For example we had a black president for 8 years!
Also things have changed for women between 1963-2017. We are getting more involved with things some people only think men can do. We had a women named Hillary Clinton run for president so women are getting themselves more out in the world !
Some inequalities that I noticed are:
ReplyDeleteWomen's rights because women were not treated as smart as men and as equals, Bathroom rights and coffee tables were separated by color.
Segregation motivates them, and women's rights again. They also wanted to help people get into space.
Now, women are mostly treated like equals. Segregation is mostly gone because you don't have separation by bathroom, buses, eating, schools and water fountains. Black and white people can walk together and not be afraid.
The lessons that I learned from this are don't judge, people are great in their own way and don't judge a person's personality by their skin color.
What inequalities do you notice during this time (early 1960s)?
ReplyDeleteA lot of things were separated for colored people during this time. For example, if you were black, you could not sit in front of the bus. Also, you would have to use a colored restroom which was dirty and didn’t have soap and paper towels. But the white restroom was in tip-top shape. Another inequality is you would have to use a colored fountain if you were black because whites didn’t want to share with blacks.
What motivates the main characters to persevere in spite of challenges?
Katherine stays committed because all of her white workmates underestimated her so she wants to prove that a black woman can do the same important work as they do. Also, her family is important to her and she wants to be a role model for her daughters. Dorothy keeps trying to get the supervisor job because she wants to prove that it’s not just whites who can have that job. Mary wants to fulfill her dreams of becoming an engineer even though she is black and a woman, so she goes to court and fights for her rights to go to night school with white men.
What has changed socially from then until now?
There is no more segregation like the separate fountains, buses and restrooms. But there is still some segregation happening even though there isn’t supposed to be.
What lessons can be learned from the movie?
Don’t doubt a person’s knowledge and abilities by their color or sex. The disrespected can succeed if you believe and persevere. You have to keep trying and work hard to fulfill your dreams.
The inequalities that I have noticed in the movie Hidden Figures are the bathrooms. Because there was a ''colored'' bathroom and a ''white'' bathroom. I also noticed that in the library there was a section for colored people and a section for the white people. Next, I noticed the water fountains, because the people who needed to drink water they had to use seperate water fountains.
ReplyDeleteWhat motivated the characters to persevere is that they had to prove that colored women can do the same thing as the white men can do. And as soon as her boss asked her questions about what she does in the bathroom she stood up for herself and told them what was unfair to her.
Something that has changed until now are the bathrooms, because now just like Katherine's boss said ''everyone pays the same color''. Also, the library has changed to because now everyone can read the same books. Then the water fountains has changed because now everyone can use the same water fountains.
Some lessons that can be learned from this movie are that colored women can do the same stuff like the white men can do. Another lesson that can be learned is that you should never quit something you really wanted to do.
I saw that women were treated disrespectful because people thought that ( warning ridiculous thinking) women aren't that smart and are just for looking at or marrying but they did lot of smart things but men never wanted to believe that I know this because this guy didn't want to let Catherine into the meeting room and sort of saved them.i also saw this when this guy thought women weren't ready for this big NASA job because he thought they weren't smart enough.i also saw. black and white unfairness in the library and at NASA station where there was only a bathroom for white people.well I think the movement of black and the women know that because she stood up for her rights instead of quitting and also because when ms mitchel only wanted her but she didn't care if she wouldn't get the job she took the other colored people.i also saw she was motivated by the country.i saw that blacks have almost no rights today they have more I know that because they couldn't read the good books in the library because there are no good books in the colored section I also know that because black peoples hab dich to sit in the back of the bus where people got sick.i also noticed women aren't as disrespected as much as back then.never juge a book by it's cover another lesson is that hope s a weapon
ReplyDeleteCathrine stood up for herself. And she didn't feel bad how they were talking to her like when the lady said "i don't know where your bathroom is at" most of the movie they were treating women like they were not smart
ReplyDeleteI notice that when Katherine asked where the bathroom was, the white women said she doesn't know where her bathroom is and when Dorthy went to the library she said " there are now smart books in this part of the library" and then the librarian called the police and took Dorthy and her sons out.
ReplyDeleteWhat motivates the main character to persevere in spite of challenges because when Mary wanted to be an engineer and she went to court just because she was a women engineer.
what changed was that now black people don't have to sit in the back anymore they can sit in the front or middle and there are no COLORED ONLY signs or WHITE ONLY sings on water fountains or bathrooms or school.
Some lessons are no matter what your skin color is we are all equal, what ever your gender is you can work anywhere you want to.
Some inequalities I notice happened during the 1960's is that there were segregated libraries, bathrooms. water fountains, and schools. I almost forgot about the buses!
ReplyDeleteWhat motivated them to persevere is that they wanted to get freedom for black people, and equal rights for woman and not just for men and the white people.
What has changed is that now we can go to the same school, woman have equal rights although still not the same rights as men (like same salary for the same job). Everybody can ride on the same buses and sit wherever they want. Black people are not judged by their skin color but by their heart, although in our society some people are the same as back in the 1960’s.
Some lessons I have learnt are that women are very strong and never give up. And those three women never gave up and I really think they were the bravest women I ever seen.
1. I definetly saw the inequalities of woman and how people didn't take them seriously and didn't treat them with respect like they treated like men. Another inequality is when a black tried to tell something to a police officer they would assuem they were trying to be disrespectful. Some inequalities that jumped out to me is when Katherine had to run 1/2 a mile to use the bathroom and1/2 a mile back and the boss yelled at her for taking a 40 minute break when black WOMAN HAD TO RUN A 1/2 AMILE BECAUSE THEY UNDER ESIMATED WOMAN TO BE IN THE TASK GROUP! 2. Something that motiveates Katherine to be determient is her belifes . She belives that women have rights and stood up to the task group. 3. One thing that changed was the schools and respect for black . even though some people still treat black bad it's much better. 4. few lessons I learned was don't judge people by their skin color .Treat others the way YOU want to be treated.:):):):):)
ReplyDeleteIn the movie things were not fair like racism and sexism. An example of how it wasn't fair for people of different races was the black women's bathroom was disgusting and didn't work like when Katherine tried to use the soap it didn't work. But in the white Women's bathroom it was clean and had nice decorations like curtains.
ReplyDeleteI think that things like that have changed since 1961 and it doesn't work like that anymore in 2017 because now there is not a white and colored bathroom like there was then.
But there is still some racism because african americans don't always get the same respect and treatment as white people. For example the things that have been happening with police tackling and hurting black citizens who they should be protecting.
In the movie Hidden Figures there are only colored and only white bathrooms. Also colored had to sit in the back of the bus and there was only colored and white water fountains and girls wern't treated the same as men.
ReplyDeleteThey want to presevre because they want to get a man in space and show women can do somthing amazing and so can black people.
All women can use the same bathroom and everyone can ride the bus the same way.
Never judge what anyone is capable of doing. When Katherine was talking to Jim she said,"It's not because we wear skirts,it's because we wear glasses."
The first inequalities that I noticed in “Hidden Figures” is the huge differences between the color people’s restroom and the white people’s restroom. The color people’s restrooms were dirty and outdated without refilling the toiletries; the white used restrooms that were clean, neat, and somewhat fancy looking, and even have sofas to sit on.
ReplyDeleteMost of all, I have noticed that whites were treated much better and have more resources. For example, white people had access to cleaner water. White people were allowed to go to nice restaurants only for white. White people attended to better schools and were able to keep study for better education. Also the libraries even had sections only for white. Furthermore, the police officers and white people in general made color people or female feel ashamed and uncomfortable to be who they are.
I think what motivated the main characters is the realization of how wrong racism and sexism are. And when they spoke up, they felt they were doing the right thing, and it was not something to feel ashamed of.
Now we don’t have segregation of white, black or any other races. We, by law, supposedly being treated equally. We can sit next to each other in the classroom, in the bus, in the subway, and in any other public places. We all have access to clean water, and no restrooms are reserved only to white people. I have many friends, some white and some black, and I don’t feel ashamed to be a non-white person.
The lessons I have learned from this movie:
We should expect the best of everyone, no matter how different they are from us. And also, the best way not to misjudge anyone is not to label people because their skin color or their gender.
In the movie Hidden Figures they showed that in NASA had one side of the building was for white people and the other side of the building was for colored people. Every time Katherine had to use the bathroom, she had to run one half mile to the colored. In the coffee machine the white people had a lot of options but the colored people just had regular coffee. When Katherine accidentally drank from the white people coffee machine, the whites did not drink from it any more.
ReplyDeleteKatherine is motivated by showing NASA that just because she is black and a woman does not mean that she can't do the same thing as white men and women.
There are no more segregated bathrooms or schools, Black people can sit anywhere they want to on the bus. There are no more segregated coffee machines.
I learned that if you believe in something then you can get it done by believing in yourself and never giving up.
One of the inaqualities in the early 1960's were that women were not treated the same way as men.Woman also couldn't have the same jobs as men.Another inaquality is black people didn't get to go to good schools and get a good education.
ReplyDeleteWhat motivates the main character in "Hidden Figures" to persevere in spite of challenges was,Katherine wants to show men that women could handle jobs like men do.She was also fighting for rights for blacks.
The lesson I learned was that do not judge someone by their race or gender.Katherine in "Hidden figures" was an amazing mathmation.Around the age of 12,Katherine went all the way to college!!That's how I learned to not judge someone by their race.
