I think Owen and Gram believe that they have to be happy and positive to help hold the family together, Like when Naomi said that Owens cheerfulness was starting to wear on her.
ReplyDeleteI know this because Naomi said Gram had this “mission” to plant sunshine in their brains.
I also know this because when a bully pulled the tape off Owens shirt and he started shaking, he told Naomi that he had done it on purpose. Which I think is kind of like reassuring her that she shouldn’t worry about him.
I also know this because after Owen told Naomi that he was faking getting upset about the tape he found a penny and said “find a penny,pick it up, and all the day you’ll have good luck!”. Which is pretty much saying “I believe in you! I think we’ll have a good day!”

DeleteOne of the author message is drinking isn't good. When you drink you can become mean, unaware, and abusive. Skyla PROVES this to be true. Skyla drinks alot, and when she drinks her behavior changes. She starts treating Naomi and Owen differently. She slapped Naomi and yelled at Owen a lot. She also snatched Owen's tape of his shirt. Skyla isn't isn't being that great of a parent when she drinks.

DeleteA pattern that I found is that every time gram asks someone if they know Naomi and Owen's dad they say no. I know that because when gram asked Bernardo's cousin he said no also when they asked the cheese lady she called them and said no they also checked the phone book and he wasn't in the phone book. So that proves that no one knows where he is.

ReplyDeleteThe Elephant Soap Carving means Family for Naomi. I know this because the last time she saw her dad, he soap-carved an elephant and gave it to her. She keeps her dad’s soap elephant, and the elephants that she soap-carved are her mom, her great-grandmother, herself, and her little brother. She has a total of 5 soap elephants, like the members of her 5 person family.
Economy Tape means comfort for Owen’s emotions. He sticks the tape to his chest and touches it when he feels nervous or unsafe. I know this because he wore it to calm himself down while they were waiting for Skyla to come to parent-teacher conferences, and he also stuck it on Naomi because he wanted her to be comforted as well.
Baby Beluga, their trailer symbolizes safety and home, the real home of Naomi, Owen and Gram. Naomi thinks about it as her real home. When she thinks about Skyla, she pictures her mother doing things in her apartment but when she comes home to visit them, it’s to Baby Beluga. And when they fled to Oaxaca, they brought Baby Beluga with them.
Naomi’s Writer’s notebook symbolizes her voice. Naomi uses it to write down her feelings and “talks” about her wishes in her lists. She writes many lists and wishes a 100 times. For example, she wrote “We Will find him” (as in her father) a hundred times in her Writer’s notebook because she really wanted to find him in Oaxaca, Mexico.
Spray ‘n Play, the playground/supermarket means a happy place after hard times for Gram, Owen, and Naomi. I know this because in the text when Skyla missed the parent teacher conferences, Gram took them to Spray ‘n Play and let them eat ice cream. Naomi and Owen felt a tiny bit reassured.

DeleteThe main problem in the story is that her Grandma, Gram, brought her to Oaxaca to get away from Naomi León’s mom and to find her dad. Gram’s temporary guardianship papers say that her Grandma, Naomi’s little brother Owen, and Naomi are not allowed to leave the state of California, where they live. If an investigator finds out, Naomi and Owen and Gram could get in real big trouble. Not only were they leaving the state of California, but they were leaving the country! In the book Gram said ”Uh oh. I don’t think we were supposed to leave California.” Even though they broke the law by leaving the state, they still needed to find their dad because their dad wanted them, unlike their mom, who just wants to make money off of Naomi.
ReplyDeleteI agree because if Skyla tells the judge about that they left the country, the kids/Naomi could be tooken away from Gram and that's what I said is the main problem in the story that Skyla wants to take Naomi to Las Vegas.

The pattern that I see is that Skyla and Clive are coming back and forth to see Naomi and Owen.
ReplyDeletewhen they left to Mexico Skyla and clive could not find them but then Mrs.Mormoto came and told gram that Skyla and Clive just passed by my house.But we do not know how they knew that they were at Mexico.
The main problem in becoming naomi leon is that skyla has problems so it's that she has a mom with problems.My evidence for this problem is that skyla is a alcoholic and needs to go to hospitals and halfway houses .She also has problems when she drinks and sometimes she's nicer when she doesn't so I think it effects her attitude .I know this because she over heard mrs. maloney taking about that so that is my evidence.

I know this because in the text Clive, Skyla's boyfriend says we're taking you to Las Vegas to get money from the government. Naomi does not want to go and leave Gram, Owen, Fabiola, Bernardo and Mrs. Maloney.

Another problem is that Naomi is getting bullied a lot because she doesn't speak up and bullies think she is vulnerable. I know this because the bullies say mean things to her like "have you stole anything today? Have you robbed any banks lately?" since her last name is outlaw.
The main problem in the story Becoming Naomi Leon is that Naomi cannot speak up for herself. I know this because when Naomi gets bullied because of her last name Outlaw but she doesn't say anything about it. Also Naomi has a notebook where she makes lists about the things she wants to say to the boys that bully her.

ReplyDeleteI know this because Mrs Maloney told gram that Skyla,Clive,Saphire were at Lemon Tree and they found out that they went to Mexico.Then Skyla went stomping to Fabiola and bernardos but she found them missing too. so she went to Mrs Maloney and asked her 20 questions. then Mrs Maloney told her that they were at family vacation.
I also know this because gram doesn't have the rights for Naomi and Owen but Skyla does.and Santiago does but they cant find him
A pattern in Becoming Naomi Leon is that some people are being mean or rude to Naomi and Owen. I think that because at school, some of the kids made fun of Naomi’s and Owen’s last name, which is Outlaw. Also, Skyla slapped Naomi on the cheek. Then Clive used Naomi’s soap carving of a bird to wash his hands. Clive also said he wants to bring Owen to Las Vegas with Naomi and Skyla so he can make lots of money off of Owen.
ReplyDeleteI think the problem in becoming Naomi Leon is that Skyla is going to take Naomi away from gram and Owen and take her to Las Vegas. I think this because Gram took Naomi out of the country with temporary guardianship to find the dad to give gram full guardianship over Naomi, and the fact that gram would do something illegal just to save Naomi proves the fact that this situation is a big problem. Also this situation is making everyone sad and emotional.

I also know this because when the cheese lady called Naomi was jumping up and down and when gram
answered the phone and said the cheese lady's husband didn't know their father her face went really sad. This shows how Naomi is anxious to find their father.
I think the message in Naomi Leon is that I should Never give up like how Naomi is not trying to not give up on finding her dad. Another message is to be a really nice, to stand up and to be brave. I think that because in the book she stood up to her mom Skyla. My other reason is when Naomi got slapped, she was brave when tricked her mom and tried to run away. I think Naomi is nice because she is really nice to her friend Blanca.
ReplyDeleteThe authors message is that stand up to what bothers u because when Owen was getting bullied and Naomi didn’t do anything about it and just stood there and did nothing.When they were on the bus Naomi was getting bullied and she just stood quiet.She writes what to say to the bullies in her “words to say to bully’s” list and she never ever said them when they bullied her.But on time she stood up to Skyla/her mom for making fun of Owen for being deformed.Another authors message I want to mention is to not keep your worries inside because when Naomi kept her worries inside the things she’s worried about get worst and worst each day she worries about it

I know this because in the text it said that Skyla wanted to sell Naomi to Las Vegas, Nevada without Owen and Gram to babysit Clive's daughter. Also, when Naomi met the Cheese Lady, she told them that there is a cousin who lived with the father.

Naomi thought the cheese lady was speaking or knew about her dad because she said his last name.Naomi was a bit excited because she knew that the cheese lady was going to help her locate her dad.

ReplyDeleteI know this because she abused Naomi so badly that Naomi wouldn't speak for years! Another example is when she slapped Naomi across the face and said, "back to what it used to be". This shows she is abusive to Naomi.
Even after all of that, Skyla calls Owen deformed and said "No I'm not taking Owen to Las Vegas." This shows that she doesn't like Owen, her own son. It's pretty rotten of a Mom to not like her own son. Skyla then tries to take Naomi to Las Vegas without Owen to meet a new sister Saphire (Clive's daughter).
Skyla is also an alcoholic and that makes Skyla a little scary. Skyla has to go to a halfway house and rehab hospitals for her drinking. The Dad wanted the kids at one point in the story but Skyla said no he can't have the kids.
Skyla is not dependable. Skyla didn't come to Naomi and Owens parent-teacher conferences. She broke her promise and went on a vacation with Clive.
These are all of the many reasons why I think Skyla is a horrible Mom.
