Myself in Metaphors

Read the poem, "Myself in Metaphors" by Joseph O. Legaspi.
Click the pic below to read the poem again.

The author uses lots of metaphors to describe himself in this poem. A metaphor is a figure of speech in which two unlike things are compared.

1. After reading this poem, do you think the speaker likes the way he looks? What clues does he give you about his feelings?

2. What do you think the speaker means in the last line when he says, "I am my world, and of the world?"

3. Write your own metaphor to describe yourself.

  3. I feel that this author does not like himself. I think this because he said that his nose looks like Mount Everest, also he said that there building a camp fires in the caverns of his nostrils. I think that the writer means by saying “I am my world, and of the world is that he is his own world and the world is outside of him. My eyes twinkle like the stars in the sky, my smile is like a medium sized banana.

  4. The speaker likes the way he looks because he wrote "I admire the canyons of my ears the slopes of my chin my cheeks" he also compared himself to beautiful things. He feels like he's a small earth. My brain is a cheetah. I'm as tall as a sunflower. my imagination a painting.

  5. Joseph O Legaspi is describing himself from all the things around him like earth or the galaxy. I know this because he described his hair as a star and his head as its own galaxy or his nose as Mount Everest. But he also described himself to things you don't see often like mountains.

  7. I think the speaker likes himself because he said that he admires his ears and he's talking about the world as his face and that his face is his own world. I think the speaker means when he says ''I am my world ,and of the world.'' is he means that he is his own world and that since he is his own world he's free to do what he want and when he wants it. My metaphors is: that my hair are like balls of yarn ,my eyebrows are brown coach roaches. My arms are like long hot dogs. And my eyes are like small tiny marbles.

  9. I think Joseph O. Legaspi likes the way he looks. I know this because he says he admires his ears, his chin, and his cheeks. He also says he is his world of the world. I really don't know exactly what Joesph O. Legaspi means when he says he is his world of the world, but I think he means he likes himself. My hair is a field of pale strawberries my cheeks and nose are covered in freckles as if they have fallen from clouds in little speckles.

  10. He likes the way he looks because he said "I admire the canyons of my ears, the slopes of my chin, my cheeks" I think when he said "I am my world, and of the world" he means he is in his own world. My own metaphorp poem is: my eyes are brown little specks. Im as skinny as a blank piece of paper. My toes are as long as a wire.

  11. I think the speaker likes the way they look. I know this because the author said, "I admire the canyons of my ears, the slopes of my chin, my cheeks." I also know this because the author was talking about themself very majestically.

I think what the author meant by, "I am my own world, and of the world" is that there is no one in the world exactly like them.

My hair is a star, burning billions of miles away.
My eyes are deep pools of water.
My ears are gorges with stampedes rushing through them.
My mouth is a cave, dark and dank.
    My eyebrows are tiger's fur.
    My nose is a flute.

I think Joseph did like’s the way he looked because the poem said “I ADMIRE the canyons of my of my ears”. I think he meant his face was like the world also he his in the world. I think this because he was describing his face as canyons and stars and galaxies. I am but but one layer of a billion layer cake that is the world.

  13. Josesh does like himself because he said every hair is a star and my face is my own galaxy. I think he means by “I am my world” that all of his body is an area in the world like his nose is Mount Everest and how in his ear was a cavern. My eyes are boulders from a mountain and how my hair is a strand of silk on a silk dress.

  14. I believe that the author does like himself. He likes to say good things about himself, such as “I’m am my world and of the world.” This means that he’s proud of himself. Also, the author means that he’s a special part of the world and no one will be like him ever again. My loose teeth are like a volcano, my gums are like lava. My hand is like a rocket rising up in the air, going into my forehead. My head is like the Moon drifting off into the space, inside my ginormous hair.

  15. After I read this poem, I think that the speaker likes himself. I think this because he says “if each strand of my hair is a star, my head is its own galaxy.” In this line, the speaker is comparing himself or herself to space and the universe, which are both beautiful and amazing. When the speakers says “I am my world, and of the worlds,” I think that he is saying that his or her imagination is his or her own made up world and that his or her body is part of the real world.

    Metaphor Poem
My Head is a tangled web of thoughts and dreams.
My hair is 1,000 grams of sand.
My eyes are pools of hot cocoa, sweet and warm.

  16. I think the author likes the way he looks because when he wrote "My forehead is the world I live in" he's not being negative about his appearance.

When the author wrote "I am the world and of the world" he means "I am a part of the world and everything is me.

    my hair is the petals
    my nose the pistel
    my arms the leaves
    my body is the stem
and my feet are the roots
